Manuel Fernández Álvarez narra, con su personal y amena prosa, la vida de Isabel la Católica. Y quizá nadie como él para comentarlo, tal como hace en la dedicatoria autógrafa con la que se abre este libro. Por eso la recogemos aquí, como un homenaje que la editorial quiere ofrecer a uno de sus más veteranos colaboradores, que ha empeñado toda su vida en el estudio de nuestro pasado:
A quienes, en lo íntimo de sus moradas, han abierto este libro con la esperanza de saber algo más sobre la reina Isabel y sobre su época.
Que se trata de un personaje importante, lo sabeis muy bien; puede que no haya otro igual en toda nuestra historia. Y que en su reinado ocurrieron grandes cosas, algunas de las que invitan a las recias polémicas, también lo sabeis perfectamente. Por eso he de confesaros que escribí este libro con el mayor cuidado. Pero también con gran ilusión, incluso con pasión a veces.
Pues bien: yo quisiera que algo de esa ilusión y de esa pasión llegara hasta vosotros.
Eso querría decir que mi tarea no ha sido en balde.

MANUEL FERNÁNDEZ ÁLVAREZ (Madrid, 1921- Salamanca, 2010). Licenciado en Filosofía y Letras por la Universidad de Valladolid (1942). Doctor por la Universidad Central con una tesis sobre Felipe II e Isabel de Inglaterra (1947). Miembro de la Real Academia de la Historia y profesor emérito de la Universidad de Salamanca y del Colegio Libre de Eméritos. Ha dedicado más de cincuenta años al estudio del siglo XVI y es autor de 38 libros y de más de 100 artículos, en su mayoría sobre la España de los Austrias, en la que es considerado uno de los máximos especialistas a nivel mundial. Ganó en 1985 el Premio Nacional de Historia con su libro La sociedad española del siglo de oro. También ha recibido la Medalla de Oro de la Ciudad de Salamanca.

Spain also has its The Tudors.

What I mean is that there has been a blockbuster Television production on Isabel, the Queen of Castile (1451-1504). I felt highly reluctant to watch it but was finally swayed by the comment circulating amongst viewers that the popular series was rather faithful to historical fact. So, I gave it a go,. ..and got hooked and enjoyed it.



To counteract the possible distortions from the TV version, though, I picked up this biography by Manuel Fernández Álvarez (MFA), one of my favourite Spanish historians. He specializes on biographies from the 15-16C. I particularly like the way he generously intersperses quotes from original sources.

And I found, may be not to my surprise, that the film producers must have followed very closely this book.

MFA distinguishes three phases in Isabel’s life. And the Series had three Seasons. Perfect fitting. As an introduction to the period, to tune in the reader, MFA reminds us of three important aspects of the period: the conquest of Constantinople in 1453; the explorations undertaken by the Portuguese navigators from a few generations earlier; and the new and strong cultural impetus that we now call the Italian Renaissance.

Even if later posterity became more critical, Isabel became a model Queen during her times and for her immediate posterity. As Castiglione recorded in his The Book of the Courtier:

... there has been nowhere in the world in our time any more distinguished example of true goodness and religion, of greatness of spirit, of prudence and chaste behaviour, of courtesy and liberality, in short, of every virtue, than Queen Isabella.

Like most European monarchs, Isabel had mixed heritage. She was half Portuguese (De Avís) and a quarter Lancaster. Catherine of Lancaster was her paternal grandmother, and it was in her honour that she would name one of her girls Catalina. And this was the reason why Catalina was chosen as the fitting bride to marry back into the English crown. And all would be well.

1. IN QUEST OF POWER

The early years of Isabel’s life were turbulent and rich of intrigues. She however took control of her life. With no real court of her own, and as the unlikely heir in her third position in the line of succession, she managed first to become a peon to her half brother King Enrique IV and ward off his attempts to marry her off according to his political goals. Instead she chose for herself, according to her own political aims as well as personal preferences. She chose Fernando, the heir to the crown of Aragón and already King of Sicily. She had never met him but was of a similar age and had a good reputation. As a proven soldier and a proven father to a couple of illegitimate children, he seemed the best alternative. She was right. They made an extraordinary couple. She had made him sign, a document in which it was clearly stipulated that he could only act as a consort in the ruling of Castile.

She then succeeded in proclaiming herself the rightful Queen of Castile, dismissing the daughter of the King’s wife. She was giving credence to the rumours that the girl Juana was illegitimate (Juana is known as Juana la Beltraneja – after Beltrán, the presumed lover of the widowed queen).

Fernando was lucky to be chosen by her. For at that time the Crown of Castile was almost four times that of Aragón and had six times its population. Castile had in effect around 70% of the population of the whole Iberian Peninsula. The composite crown of Aragón was also experiencing an economic decline, in particular in Catalonia, and even if the Kingdom of Valencia was going through its golden age, it was not sufficient to counterweigh the slump in the Barcelona County. Once Isabel had her crown, a second phase of problems began. She had to gain full control and tame the nobles. But let’s read Castiglione again:

.. when she came to the throne she found the greater part of Castile held by the grandees; nevertheless, she recovered it all by acting so justly and in such a manner that the very same men who were deprived stayed loyal to her and content to give up what they held.

The court at the time was itinerant. There was not yet a political centre or capital so during these years during which she had to defend her dynastic role and subjugate the nobles she was always on the move from one province and castle to another. A full civil war in fact erupted and degenerated into a war with neighbouring Portugal.



During this time she certainly forged her strong personality. She was determined, brave, independent, stubborn, and fanatically pious. Once, when she was pregnant, she rode overnight through the harsh Castilian winter, to get close to the battlefield. She lost her son. Another time she ignored the indications of her advisors, and she entered again mounted a town up in armed rebellion. She was peacefully received and welcomed by the inhabitants.


2. GREAT ENTERPRISES

The middle period, the one of great undertakings, is marked by the year 1492. Several things happened. All celebrated then; not all celebrated now.

The scholar Antonio de Nebrija published the first Grammar of the Spanish language. May be the firs of any Romance language. He dedicated it to her. This book is now considered the cornerstone of the Spanish language.



This was also the year of the celebrated arrival in the Americas and I will not go into this except to point out that although the team of scholars who examined Columbus proposals thought, rightly, that he was mistaken, he succeeded in convincing Isabel. There certainly was an awareness of what Portugal was achieving. A closer understanding sprung between Isabel and the Genoese. And Columbus’s son Diego became a page in the court of the heir Juan.

And it was also in 1492 that the conquest of the remaining enclave still held by the Muslims in the peninsula, the Kingdom of Granada, was finalized. This was the last stage of the “Reconquista” which had begun almost eight centuries before, and took about ten years of constant fighting in the South. The fall of Constantinople had awaken Christian fears and gave a new impetus to this task of gaining back lost territories. The Muslim kingdom was so torn by internal fights within the ruling family that I was glad to have the TV version that made it easier to follow who was who and who betrayed whom. It was also filmed extensively in the beautiful Alhambra, and the glorious scene for the burial of Muley Hacén (Abu l-Hasan Ali), in the snowy peaks of Sierra Nevada is unforgettable.




Although the Chief of her armies was her husband, when Isabel learnt that his strategy was to storm into the palace of the Alhambra, she immediately overrode his instructions and decreed that they would undertake instead a conquest by attrition and that the Alhambra could not be touched. She settled herself on the battlefield camps to supervise that things were done as she wanted them.

Current tourists should be grateful to her.



1492 was also a fatal year for a couple other events.

The fate of the Jewish population living in Europe started running into difficulties with the onset of the Crusades. From the first at the end of the 11C, Christian hostility grew until it reached the succession of expulsions. This first happened in England, then in Normandy and France, to name a few. Many fled towards the East but a considerable proportion established themselves in the Iberian Peninsula where they succeeded in settling very prosperous communities and integrating well with the rest of the society. Isabel had several close advisors from the Jewish community and her husband Fernando had Jewish blood.

However it was also during the same year as the Conquest of Granada, and is related to it (the ruling was named the Alhambra Edict and was signed two months after Granada fell). After gaining full control of what the monarchs considered their territories, maintaining peace became their objective. For this they thought that a more homogeneous and Christian population was necessary. Jews had already been attracting rejection from sections of the Christian population a few decades before Isabel’s time, but bigotry was increasing. The prosperity and political clout of the Jews were envied.

Subsequent times proved this Edict to have been a blunder. Precisely because the Jews were well integrated while holding also some crucial sectors, such as finance, their being extirpated from what had become their country, left the country amputated. May be the later financing of expansion and Empire would have been managed better and not by accumulating external debt had the Jewish bankers managed it.

As MFA says, this remains one of the darkest pages in the History of Spain.

This dark page led to another one even darker: the Inquisition. And again the TV series was pretty successful in characterizing Torquemada, not as the obvious Devil, but as a soft-spoken, suave, insinuatory Dominican, who playing on the fanatic religiosity of the Queen and the more political objectives of the King, succeeded in establishing this rule of terror. One of the most maddening conditions, and which became crucial for its success, was that incriminators could remain anonymous. This was the opening of the lid of a Pandora box of accumulated hatreds.

And to add ‘One more thing’ on the year 1492. This was also when Lorenzo de Medici, Il Magnifico died in Florence. With his death the Lodi League came to an end. The repercussions on Aragón and Castile became apparent a few years later.


3. TRIUMPHS AND TEARS.

In the last phase it would be the time to focus more on Aragón, with its involvement with the Kingdom of Naples, the conflicts with France and the Italian wars, but I will leave that for when I write the review on Fernando el Católico.

The last phase of Isabel was tragic, both on personal and political grounds. And they were connected.

Once having gained stability and balance, the union of these two Kingdoms was on its way to become one of the new countries of the modern European era. But for this the dynastic succession was paramount. They needed a son to unite both crowns into one single country. Castile accepted women as ruler Queens, (Isabel was one!), but Aragón did not.

Isabel had six pregnancies and seven children. Her first son died as a result of her night ride. The boy in the twins also died. But there was one remaining son, Juan, on whom all the hopes were projected. But soon after marrying the daughter of Emperor Maximilian, Juan died.

Isabel was heartbroken.

Then the eldest daughter, Isabel, who had married the heir of Portugal, but became a widow at a young age, after insistence by her parents married again the new Portuguese King. Isabel the daughter died on childbirth leaving little Miguel as the heir to the three Kingdoms: Portugal, Castile and Aragón. He also died as an infant. Had this death been averted the posterior history of the Peninsula would have been very different.

Isabel was in despair.

The succession had to go to the next in line, Juana, who had married the son of the Emperor Maximilian, Felipe el Hermoso (Philip the Fair), and who had also given birth to a son a few months before the death of little Miguel. This son was Carlos. The future Emperor.

But Juana was losing her senses. As Juana la Loca (the Mad), she was completely besotted with her somewhat daft husband who was intent in controlling her.

Isabel and Fernando were horrified. Apart from the personal tragedy of so many deaths, they were seeing all their work about to topple. Philip was clearly acting as a vassal of the King of France, and were the insane daughter to inherit the crown of Castile, it would certainly fall under King Louis XII’s claws.

With these dire prospects, Isabel fell ill. Before dying she left her Will, which has become famous for a couple of codicils. One was that her husband, who was only a Consort for the Kingdom of Castile, would be the Regent to assist the daughter Juana. And second, and more significant, she ordered that the inhabitants of the Americas be treated justly, as neighbours, and that neither personal nor material harm should be imposed upon them.



She abolished slavery.

que no consientan ni den lugar a que los indios, vecinos y moradores de las Indias y Tierra Firme, ganadas y por ganar, reciban agravio alguno en sus personas ni bienes, antes al contrario que sean bien y justamente tratados, y si han recibido algún agravio que lo remedien y provean para que no se sobrepase en cosa alguna lo que en las cartas apostólicas de dicha concesión se mandaba y establecía.

Although she is no longer living, her authority endures, like a wheel that has been spun vigorously for a long time and then, though no one is turning it any longer, continues to turn for a good space by itself.

Más que una reseña es una exposición de opiniones jajaj. Para el que no se quiera leer el texto entero podéis ir al cuarto párrafo por abajo a partir de ese momento me empiezo a calentar progresivamente.

Isabel nace en 1451 en Madrigal (Ávila), para entender el tiempo en el que nació es fundamental tener tres sucesos en cuenta: la caída de Constantinopla en 1453 , el comienzo del Renacimiento y por último las exploraciones de ultramar por la Corona de Portugal. Más adelante conectaré estos tres sucesos con su reinado.

En 1454 muere su padre, el rey Juan II de Castilla, y sube al trono su medio hermano Enrique IV, 'el Impotente'. Enrique IV era hijo de María de Aragón, mientras que Isabel y su hermano pequeño Alfonso eran hijos de Isabel de Portugal. Isabel y Alonso pasaron su infancia en Madrigal junto a su madre, hasta que Enrique IV por fin concibió una heredera en 1462, Juana 'la Beltraneja', de la cual se sospechaba que no era hija legítima del rey si no de Beltrán de la Cueva. Es por esto que decidió tenerlos controlados a Isabel y Alfonso en la corte junto a él. Entonces la pregunta que surge es cómo llegó a ser Isabel reina de Castilla si era la cuarta en la sucesión.

Un grupo de nobles entre los que se encontraba el arzobispo de Toledo de aquel entonces, Alfonso Carrillo, conjuran contra Enrique encumbrando al trono a Alonso, el hermano de Isabel, estallando así una guerra civil entre los partidarios de Enrique y los partidarios de Alfonso. Sin embargo, Alfonso muere al poco tiempo e Isabel niega proclamarse reina. Empiezan así una serie de negociaciones que culminan con la Concordia de Guisando en 1468 donde el rey proclama a Isabel como Princesa de Asturias y por ende heredera de Castilla por delante de Juana. Así que en 1474 cuando Enrique IV muere Isabel se convierte en reina de Castilla. Estallando una segunda guerra civil con los partidarios de Juana 'la Beltraneja' como el Marqués de Villena. Todo esto me hace preguntarme si Isabel tenía legitimidad a hacer todo esto, probablemente no, pero sí que es verdad que lo que es legítimo o no muchas veces no está claro como bien sabemos los españoles a lo largo de nuestra historia y no hay más que ver la Guerra de Sucesión de 1701.

El segundo punto que quiero comentar es Fernando II de Aragón. Tras proclamarse princesa de Asturias tanto los consejeros de Isabel como Juan II de Aragón empezaron a negociar un matrimonio entre Isabel y Fernando, pues ambos eran de la misma edad más o menos y lo más importante podían unir dinásticamente ambos reinos, Castilla y Aragón. Pero, había un problema, ambos eran primos segundos y el Papa de entonces no quería darles la dispensa que necesitaban para poder casarse. Sin embargo, a los jóvenes príncipes les chupó un huevo y la falsificaron.

Tercero me gustaría hablar de la Santa Inquisición, fundada por la reina Isabel en 1480. Creo que el libro tiene un punto de vista un poco anticuado sobre la Inquisición, siguiendo el relato tradicional de los historiadores franceses e ingleses. Es decir, la Inquisición fue una institución malvada y sádica que mataba a las personas por ser de otra religión, bueno, según tengo entendido (no digo que sea verdad) no fue tan así, en aquel momento fue uno de los tribunales con el mejor código penal de la época. Por otro lado no tenían potestad sobre los creyentes de otras religiones, solo sobre los cristianos, es por ello que se juzgaba a judíos conversos acusados de judaizar. No digo que este bien hacer eso, pero el resto de países europeos tuvieron su inquisición y en algunos acabó en la locura de matar mujeres acusadas de brujas por la cara. Por último sobre la Inquisición creo que para ser justos hay que decir que España fue uno de los pocos países sin guerras de religión debido al surgimiento de los protestantes, eso sí que fue una masacre por ejemplo en Alemania.

Llegamos a 1492, el annus mirabilis de la monarquía hispánica. Lo primero de todo es la toma de Granada después de 10 años de guerra con el último reino islámico de la Península. Normalmente a este hecho no se le da la importancia que debería, pero es la respuesta del mundo cristiano a la toma de Constantinopla por el turco. Los reyes y el papa le dieron un valor de guerra santa que no se vivió desde las primeras cruzadas echando así a los musulmanes la península después de 1000 años. Por otro lado, en esta campaña surge una de las grandes figuras de la historia de España que lamentablemente no todo el mundo conoce, Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba 'el Gran Capitán'. Por alguna razón tenemos en la cabeza Al-Ándalus como un lugar donde convivían las tres religiones y que el conocimiento brotaba por todos lados, esto sí que es un cuento y no los de Andersen.

Lo último de lo que quiero hablar es del tema de América. Colón llega a América el 12 de octubre de 1492 como todos sabemos y no mucho tiempo después comienza el periodo de la conquista. Hay varias cosas que me gustaría comentar y que desde luego comentaré más a fondo cuando escriba sobre el libro de Carlos I. Desde el principio de la conquista en 1493 Isabel le ordena a Colón que trate bien a los indios sin que les cause enojo alguno y en 1504, ya de forma póstuma Isabel se preocupa de los derechos de los indios en su testamento y lo que germinaría en las Leyes de Burgos cerrando así la puerta de la esclavitud para los americanos y la abre para el mestizaje, algo propio del Imperio Español como se pudo ver en la conquista de las Canarias. Lo de los aztecas y Cortés lo dejo para otro momento porque telita lo de que se acuse de casi cometer un genocidio a un tío con menos de 600 personas bajo su mando. A no ser que por aquel entonces tuvieran algún tipo de arma de destrucción masiva que luego se perdió por arte de birlibirloque yo no sé como masacraron al Imperio Azteca en su pleno esplendor, pero bueno, supongo que algún interés político habrá detrás de todo esto. Por último solo mencionar, así como un recordatorio amistoso, que a diferencia del resto de potencias europeas España no tuvo colonias, tuvo virreinatos que es extremadamente diferente.

Dicho todo esto, posiblemente Isabel La Católica sea de las mujeres más importantes de la Historia de la Humanidad si no la más importante, quizá junto a Victoria del Reino Unido, pero personalmente creo que esta última no le llega ni a la suela del zapato. No acabo de entender por qué los españoles nos avergonzamos de nuestra historia y despreciamos a nuestras figuras y nuestros logros como país, muchas veces ni siquiera podemos despreciar estar figuras porque ni las conocemos como por ejemplo Domingo de Soto que fue el primero en postular que un objeto en caída libre lo hacía con una aceleración constante y propuso que esto se debía a una 'resistencia interna' originada en la Tierra adelantándose a Galileo y Newton, este hombre por cierto pertenecía a la Inquisición. En fin, paro de escribir ya porque me caliento y no puede ser. Soy español a mucha honra y con dos cojones igual que los tuvo Isabel la Católica.

Foi uma leitura propositadamente longa. Queria certificar-me de que não deixava escapar qualquer pormenor e de aprendia muitas coisas sobre a vida desta rainha, uma das minhas personagens históricas favoritas.

Para quem gosta de história e gostaria de saber um pouco mais sobre uma das grandes rainhas de Espanha, responsável pelo fim da Reconquista e pelo patrocínio das viagens de Cristóvão Colombo, aconselho a leitura deste livro.

La reina más inteligente de la historia española, y quizás, del mundo entero. Y todo ello, en una época de miseria, pestes, guerras, reconquistas y descubrimientos.
El lenguaje del historiador y autor de este libro es de alta calidad. He aprendido el significado de "fuegos", en relación a la población y la utilizo en mis tours de guía turístico en Brujas.

Me hubiera gustado saber más acerca de la reina; cuáles eran sus aficiones, qué hacía en su tiempo libre además de su trabajo como reina, qué lenguas intentaba hablar, qué comía, etc. También me habría gustado saber si tenía algún interés en saber utilizar la espada, tirar en arco, montar a caballo...
Por todo lo demás, el libro es ESPECTACULAR. Enhorabuena por lo conseguido a Manuel Fernández Álvarez, y a toda la gente que cita en este libro importante para la historia de Castilla, de España, y de las mujeres reinas de la historia. 10!

Una biografía magistral sobre la vida de Isabel la Católica, la cual fue muy intensa desde su infancia. Es abrumadora la cantidad de hechos históricos importantes que ocurrieron en torno a ella, todos contados a la perfección por el gran Manuel Fernández Álvarez.
La mayoría la conocemos por sus últimos años (fin de la guerra de granada, descubrimiento de América, muerte del príncipe Juan y los problemas con la sucesión, etc), pero merece la pena conocer también la forma en la que llegó al poder (muerte de su hermano el infante Alfonso, las triquiñuelas para concertar matrimonio con Fernándo el Católico, desavenencias con su hermanastro el rey Enrique IV, posterior guerra contra los partidarios de Juana la Beltraneja, etc).
Si alguien está interesado en saber más sobre los primeros años de la reina Isabel, este libro es ideal.

Una lectura muy interesante sobre la Reina que hizo que España se expandiese a todos sus territorios actuales. Una mujer fuerte y decidida que tuvo un papel esencial en el descubrimiento de las Américas (este capítulo fue el más interesante).
Tres estrellas porque el relato a veces es un poco frío. Sin embargo, siendo un libro histórico escrito por un académico, los recursos utilizados deben ser mencionados.

Estamos ante un libro muy completo sobre Isabel la católica, repasa con muchísimos detalles la historia esta reina de Castilla, como heredó un reino catastrófico manejado por los nobles y lo llevó a lo mas alto del mundo, aunque a base de mucha sangre inocente derramada, demasiada.

Mi interes por este libro fue a raiz de un viaje a Granada, a la Alhambra y su catedral, quise entender todo aquello, un viaje muy recomendado si no han ido.

El autor cita fragmentos de textos antiguos y se nota el gradísimo esfuerzo realizado para la escribir esta obra.

Lo recomiendo ya que leer sobre historia nos hace comprender tanto el presente como el futuro.

Este libro está lleno de acontecimientos históricos, te sumerge en la historia de España en el siglo XV.
Es completamente una investigación con la Isabel la católica como protagonista.
En lo personal, me hubiera gustado más que se centrara en el lado oscuro de la reina, pero si la historia es lo tuyo, este libro lo disfrutarás mucho.

O livro é bom e fala sobre a vida da rainha Isabel da Espanha. Escrito por um historiador espanhol, o livro vai da infância à morte da rainha e aborda seus grandes feitos e conquistas mas passa mais superficialmente nas partes da Inquisição e expulsão dos judeus. Assim, acho que o autor foi tendencioso no sentido de ressaltar a grande Estadista, Rainha e lutadora da Cristandade mas não aprofunda no seu lado mais "sombrio". Ele mesmo comenta rapidamente que até Roma achava a Inquisição espanhola exagerada. Enfim, valeu por me dar mais conhecimento da História da Isabel, a Católica mas tem que ler "tirando os 9 fora".

El libro en general es bastante entretenido y bien documentado en las anécdotas que cuneta, todo con citas originales y si modificación lo que hace ágil el relato. Como biografía la sección que más me interesaba era la etapa de la conquista de América y como se veía desde el otro lado de la vereda, parte que se extiende lo suficiente para entender cual fue la mirada y la convicción para apoyar la iniciativa de Colón. Tengo que confesar que la parte mas tediosa es la de la conquista de granada, sin embargo, es fundamental para el entendimiento de la la vida de la Reina.

Manuel Fernández offers a thorough study about the times and political work of Isabella of Castile; however, it's the exact same information a reader finds in every "biography" of the great queen. There aren't any new aspects or juicy details, her life as mother or wife completely forgotten. The writing is quite repetitive and goes round the bush again and again. This is a political biography, not a personal one. Sort of disappointing.

ha sido interesante, pero me esperaba más, un estilo más imparcial quizás, buen libro como punto de partida, pero los hay más interesantes y amenos a mi gusto.
