Times are tough all around and East Coast fisherman Freeman has started hauling tourists out to see the whales to supplement his fishing income. Alberta cowboy Josh knows just how bad things are -- he recently lost his father and debt ate up his inheritance. He's out to see the ocean and the whales before he goes back home and looks for any work he can find.

Freeman takes Josh under his wing and makes sure the "from away" cowboy has a chance to experience everything the Maritimes have to offer, including Freeman himself. Can these two hard-working men find a way to make their own happiness work for them?

Drew Zachary is the pen-name of co-authors Chris Owen and Vic Winter.

"Born in the wilds of Canada, Drew grew up with an axe in one hand and a book in the other. Drew's love of writing is outshone only by his love of men. Lucky for him, he can combine the two.

From his father, Drew learned how to wield that axe, fix a carburetor and bake a mean can of beans using fire, gas or electricity. From his mother, he learned how to rotate the tires, turn apples into just about anything from cider to pie to a meatless lasagna, and how to swim. At twelve Drew ran away to join the circus, only to run away from it when he realized just how badly elephant poop stinks.

When Drew ran out of books to read he started writing his own and never looked back. His home is filled with books, unfinished manuscripts and his grandmother's knick knacks. His best friend is a dog named Barney and his pet fish keep him entertained for hours.

Drew writes about love because he still believes in it. Even though he's never found that special man himself, he's never given up hope. Well, never on a permanent basis, anyway."

This is a simple, sweet and charming story.
No angst, no external conflict, no silly internal musings, just a really good book.
Freeman and Josh know they are gay but obligations and location has kept them from really acting on it.
When they find each other, their lives become better, because they have each other.
No big words of love, no major heart to hearts, but you see the love all the same.
Here's a quote that sort of sums it up:
"While he might have lost everything when his father died, while money had been damn tight during the winter and he saw no reason for that to change, he figured having Freeman made him pretty damn lucky."

This was a slow build that I am really glad I kept reading. It contains one of my most loved themes: love found in an elemental form, without artifice or extras, without urbanity or over-refinement; just pure, simple, genuine, natural.

I loved the discovery of love and sexuality these two characters experience with each other. There is one element of Freeman's preferences that exists in a raw form that I would have liked to see explored a little more but I really like the tardigrade pacing of the development in this book and am led to believe that, even off the page, it would get there eventually but in a natural way.

These two MCs are sweet, endearing, and believable, as are their stories. They made for a great read.

Ps: I love Josh's adoration of the ocean. It reflects my own :-)

Why are these characters so sexually awkward? The level of naivety is hard to believe considering they are 2 grown men. The awkwardness never eased throughout the whole book regardless of the fact that they were practically living together. I can understand some reticence during a first time gay sex experience but not every time for the entire book. They couldn't even say the word "sex"!
The book was ok but it was very one note and the plot came off as monotone. Sweet and cute even but monotone. There wasn't even any conflict within Josh and Freeman's relationship. I like a little struggle in my love stories. Especially first timer stories.
I believe overall this author is talented and writes good characters who are interesting and I will try other books by him. Hopefully the next one will have a non monotone plot.

A sweet book with a slow build - rather enjoyable! The MCs felt much younger than I believe they were supposed to e, but they were likeable, so I forgave :)

Definitely a book you should read if you like the true romantic build-up with 'virginal' characters.

I can't even begin to explain how wonderful this book is! It's awesome on so many levels! First of all there's really strong sense of place here, you can so vividly see this small town on the oceanside. And the whole sad vibe, because of tough times - how Josh'd lost it all and Freeman had to sell his house to keep his beloved boat. But Freeman's passion for the ocean is really so strong and their first trip with Josh to see the whales is so poetic :) And their relationship's so adorable, their tentative steps around each other and how they're both insecure and shy - it's just so touching and moving :)
Heartwarming story!! :)

I wanted to love it - I love "On Fire" and this is the same author but...more than a "I liked it" is not possible.

The book is too simple, two simple men meet, make a cautious connection, stay together, explore their sexuality together (wow, that kind of innocence is kind of unrealistic) and then stay together. No drama, no problems, just a lot of sex but in a very restrained way.

It's sweet to read but nothing I would reread.

The life of a fisherman isn’t exactly profitable, so Freeman Gallant has had to start taking tourists out whale watching to supplement his income. The job definitely has its benefits when cowboy Josh Stubbins shows up for an outing. Josh is just out for a week to see the ocean before he has to go back to Alberta and find work. But fate has different plans for the pair when attraction sparks instantly between the two. It’s up to the east coast fisherman and the “from away” cowboy to see if they can make their newfound relationship work.

For a story featuring two heroes who are so incredibly masculine, it may seem odd that the word that comes to mind when describing From Away is sweet. Yet, that’s exactly what this story is. Drew Zachary has delivered an irresistibly charming romance that captured my heart from the very beginning and didn’t let go. Both Josh and Freeman are strong, hardworking men. They’re wonderfully sexy, but neither is vastly experienced, so it was a joy to watch them explore their own sensuality with one another. There are no extraordinary obstacles or big misunderstandings in the story, but rather Josh and Freeman face the complications of everyday life. This was a wonderful change of pace for me and the story was not any less engaging for it. Beautifully written with two utterly delicious heroes, From Away is not to be missed.

I liked this one very much - it was rather short and the MCs were strongly attracted to each other from the very beginning, but I loved the way their budding romance was described. Very good read.
