This is a beautiful, comprehensive compilation with wonderful illustrations and a wealth of background information, for example on the characters involved in the story, uniquely Thai aspects of their version of the Ramayana, and so on.

The characters, dieties and creatures are very interesting. Individual scenes are quite vivid and the story is packed with battles, death and destruction, good and evil, sexual and other relations (often between gods and goddesses and mortals). For someone who hasn't been steeped in it the story itself is difficult to follow and rather a long one. The cast of many characters alone is difficult to grok and keep track of, and some have multiple forms.

Read this while on vacation in Thailand. Very useful background history for understanding the sites visited.

A very enjoyable read, and a story that is, by all definitions, truly epic. Cosmic battles, magic and archery, love, conflict, demons, monkey armies... it really has everything.
