Trolley No. 1852

Rate this book
Imagine this... In 1934, ground-breaking horror writer H.P. Lovecraft is invited to write a story for a subversive underground magazine, all on the condition that a pseudonym will be used. The pay is lofty, and God knows, HPL needs the money; therefore...he agrees.

There’s one catch.

It has to be a pornographic story...

ALL ABOARD TROLLEY NO. 1852

Through the midnight bowels of New York City, the decrepit trolley clatters on, its single yellow headlight illumining one desolate alley and squalid, trash-strewn street after the next, through crumbling ghettos and betwixt drab skyscrapers and labyrinthine edifices–indeed, the very guts of the Depression-ravaged metropolis. The Trolley admits only a special sort of rider, and takes them to a very select destination...

THE 1852 CLUB

What is the meaning behind the cryptic number, and what is the ghastly truth behind the club’s voluptuous madam? For, yes, the 1852 Club is a bordello of the most macabre discrimination. Destitute academician Morgan Phillips will learn of all the club’s pestiferous secrets but not before he is first subjected to unnameable acts degradation and abuse, and is then thrown body and soul into a morass of erotic abandon, sexual perversion, and gut-churning, brain-warping, inter-dimensional carnality so unspeakable it can scarcely be described...

Join horror veteran Edward Lee in this bold homage to his favorite horror author: H.P. Lovecraft. Herein, Lee boldly converts HPL’s obscure fragment “The Thing in the Moonlight” into a full-fledged novella, incorporating as best he can the Master’s rich, singular style and vision, while integrating some of his own lurid tricks and treats...

Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name.

Edward Lee is an American novelist specializing in the field of horror, and has authored 40 books, more than half of which have been published by mass-market New York paperback companies such as Leisure/Dorchester, Berkley, and Zebra/Kensington. He is a Bram Stoker award nominee for his story "Mr. Torso," and his short stories have appeared in over a dozen mass-market anthologies, including THE BEST AMERICAN MYSTERY STORIES OF 2000, Pocket's HOT BLOOD series, and the award-wining 999. Several of his novels have sold translation rights to Germany, Greece, and Romania. He also publishes quite actively in the small-press/limited-edition hardcover market; many of his books in this category have become collector's items. While a number of Lee's projects have been optioned for film, only one has been made, HEADER, which was released on DVD to mixed reviews in June, 2009, by Synapse Films.

Lee is particularly known for over-the-top occult concepts and an accelerated treatment of erotic and/or morbid sexual imagery and visceral violence.

He was born on May 25, 1957 in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Bowie, Maryland. In the late-70s he served in the U.S. Army's 1st Armored Division, in Erlangen, West Germany, then, for a short time, was a municipal police officer in Cottage City, Maryland. Lee also attended the University of Maryland as an English major but quit in his last semester to pursue his dream of being a horror novelist. For over 15 years, he worked as the night manager for a security company in Annapolis, Maryland, while writing in his spare time. In 1997, however, he became a full-time writer, first spending several years in Seattle and then moving to St. Pete Beach, Florida, where he currently resides.

Of note, the author cites as his strongest influence horror legend H. P. Lovecraft; in 2007, Lee embarked on what he calls his "Lovecraft kick" and wrote a spate of novels and novellas which tribute Lovecraft and his famous Cthulhu Mythos. Among these projects are THE INNSWICH HORROR, "Trolley No. 1852," HAUNTER OF THE THRESHOLD, GOING MONSTERING, "Pages Torn From A Travel Journal," and "You Are My Everything." Lee promises more Lovecraftian work on the horizon.

Did Lovecraft ever write an erotic story? In this book he did for the amount of $ 500! Edward Lee comes up with an exciting frame of his novella. You can follow the main character in search of his lost sister Selina Phillips. Will he find her at the end? We talk about the worldwide crisis in the 1930s and why does his sister works as a prostitute? Will her brother find her at the end and can he rescue her from the strange being holding her captive? What about the mysterious bawd Miss Aheb (loved the reference to some old Egyptian lore)? Why are the "Pyramidiles" so strange? The author really manages to put much Lovecraft into his bizarre sex and brothel tale (you'll come across many hilarious details, no spoilers here and see why the main character leaves a lasting impression in the bordello). Edward Lee is a legendary writer. But this story was a bit too fantastic, bizarre and over the top for my taste. Essential for all Lovecraft admirers and Lee fans!

Lee's ode to Lovecraft, a slim novella, is a little too silly to be a real homage, but it is a bit of a treat to read Lee writing as someone else. Our main protagonist (Morgan) was a professor at Brown until the Great Depression hit and he got laid off; instructors of ancient mythology were seen as less essential than other fields. Finding himself with some free time, he heads to NYC to find his sister who stopped writing him a few years ago...

Actually, the above is not quite correct-- this is a story within a story. The 'meta' story has a broke and pretty hopeless H.P. Lovecraft receiving in the mail one day an opportunity to write a story for a, lets say, sexually explicit, underground publication. The money is good, so Lovecraft puts on his thinking cap and comes up with Trolley No. 1852. Hence, the actual story of the Trolley is penned akin to the writing style of Lovecraft, but Lovecraft writing a monstrous pornography. Expect some sleazy, graphic sex scenes (this is Edward Lee after all) coupled (I know, bad pun) with a tale of otherworldly beings (who just happen to run a bordello).

I think this might have been better if Lee really gave the Lovecraftian aspects more gravity; the skeezy whores of the bordello really came in as comic relief. Not really scary, but very graphic. Fun read, but not a Lee classic 3 sleazy stars!

This story was a win on so many levels! First of all, the idea. Would you like to read pron written by H.P.Lovecraft? I'd say not only by him but I can come up with a handful of authors whose writings for Erotesque I would love to read :)
Second, I think the realization was great. I read Lovecraft in translation, so I can't really say if the language was adequate - but judging on other things, I think it was. The rest was so recognizable - I don't think any of the magazine's readers could have doubted who the author was.
I also loved the story in the story (oh, and Edward Lee being an equal opportunity guy - meaning that not only women have to suffer sexually in his stories but men as well). It was a wild story and... I loved the ending.
Loved the ending of the outer story, too. The unexpected turn - and the last phrase. Brilliant!

I never enjoy reading erotica or pornographic scenes. I don't consider myself a conservative kind of guy but reading is different than watching (LOL) so I started this month of horror with the book that would made me less confortable. Sometimes you have to indulge on that.

What we have here is a tale of Lovecraft himself - told in his perspective. What would Lovecraft had to do to survive if his horror tales were not sufficient? Well he would write pornographic horror tales of course - that's the premise of this book.

Lovecraft is struggling in terms of finance and a letter comes from the mail saying that if he writes a erotic story they would give him 500 dollars x 2 (bear in mind that this was 70 years ago so it was a lot of money). He then, being Lovecraft he makes a story with horror elements. Basically you've got a guy Morgan Philips (wonder where he got those names ?) goes to the city of new york to find his sister -after several time not knowing where she is he meets a guy called Erwin (Robert E Howard) who tells him of a place where he can try since it's a whorehouse - but it's a strange one riddle with mysteries and time bending stuff.

There, is where the majority of this tale passes and you've got all scenes of sex, it seems Lovecraft has a member with 12 inches that basically destroys everyone of the girls (5 of them in a row). It's like watching pornhub but reading in the same writing style of Lovecraft - and that's something I wanted to talk about - the writing - this was marvelous reading matterial - he change the way the characters spoke with such ease that was really a delight

" and after a few more moments of recapturing her wind, she manipulated herself around, to look flabbergasted at my still-stiff-as-a-baker's-pin-penis
"Did you come?"
I elevated a brow. " If by that you mean did I experience an ejaculatory release and sequent orgasm? No."

This is some example, it reminds me of one character of Walking Dead franchise way of talking...

Either way, good take - I will not be a fan of pornographic lovecraftian tales BUT I am now a fan of Edward Lee. I bought the other two books he wrote in lovecraftian tale "The Innswich Horror " And "The Haunter of the Treshold".

Trolley No. 1852 is another one of Edward Lee's Lovecraftian stories, and this novella proves to be as good as anything the notorious King of Hardcore Horror has written to date. The book opens up with HP Lovecraft in the midst of financial turmoil, subsisting on canned cold beans for dinner and unsure if he will be able to pay rent for himself and his ailing aunt. Then comes an invitation from a new publisher of erotically fantastic stories, for his services to write for them, for a huge sum, with a check included...and Lovecraft accepts the challenge...and the novella cleverly switches POV and the reader "reads" the story HPL has written for EROSTESQUE magazine, a story obviously and eerily similar to most of HPL's work. I will refrain from giving any further details, needless to say, it DOES involves a trolley, a secret sex club, travels to an otherworldly plane, and yes, plenty of horror and perverse eroticism. This is Ed Lee, remember?

Adjectives! Adjectives galore! As a massive fan of Lovecraft's work, I found this to be an incredibly fun read, filled with laugh-out-loud moments throughout. However, I can see it being far less impactful for those unfamiliar with Lovecraft. I would only recommend this book to those well-versed in his writing. In the sections where Lovecraft himself is portrayed as a character, Lee does a commendable job of capturing elements of his personal life—his past marriage, his disdain for New York, the racism intertwined with that, and his near-constant financial ruin, where canned beans were often his main sustenance.

Would the real Lovecraft ever agree to write erotica, even under a pseudonym, if the paycheck was large enough? Whether he would or wouldn’t is beside the point; what matters is how well Lee captures the comedic essence of this homage. From writing Lovecraft’s thoughts within this context, to expanding on an idea from a dream mentioned in one of his letters, to mimicking his signature style, it’s clear this was created with positive intentions by a devoted fan. The concept behind this homage was undoubtedly a creative risk, but in my opinion, it paid off.

P.S.

Even writing under a pseudonym, any reader of the erotic magazine would instantly recognize Lovecraft's unmistakable style. His refusal to mask his voice, even through the lens of pornography, was, frankly, hilarious.

I must say "Trolley No. 1852" was eye-opening.

I'm a Lovecraft fan, and so I picked this up when I saw that a new-to-me author, Lee, would be imitating Lovecraft's style and write a short story on erotic horror. I figured tentacle porn, an old fashioned trolley, some purple prose, etc. I can't say I really liked it as a story, but the author certainly has writing chops. Perhaps I'm just not finding the humor in this one.

Not my favorite

I really like Edward Lee’ s books however this one just didn’t hit a home run with me. I’m not saying it wasn’t good just was ehhhh. It follows HP Lovecraft who needs to make money. He is approached by a magazine to write a story for them and he would get paid handsomely. The thing is, it is a pornographic magazine. He agrees to do it and writes a very sick take about Trolley No 1852. It is a horrific story and very well written and does have a cool ending, I don’t know for me just wasn’t one of my favorites, still love his books though!

I have a love hate relationship with this book.
After all I have heard about Edward Lee, I picked this book up expecting a lot more than what I got.

The writing of the actual story itself is really well done, if though a little too over descriptive, even for someone mimicing Lovecraft's writing. Yet despite that, the words flow well together and create a wonderfully written tale. Yet this is off-set by the story that bookends that tale about Lovecraft himself where the writing is actually almost abysmal in the way it is approached. As it is written in third person rather than first, there is no real reason to phrase the language in such a way as to make it seem as if it's from HP's mind. (and poorly at that no less) To be frank, the whole part of the story about Lovecraft could easily be removed and the actual Trolly story kept, and this story would lose nothing. In fact, it would be a lot stronger and more enjoyable.

As for Edward Lee's gross out horror which he is so well known for...it's lacking in this story unless you don't have access to the internet. There was only one actual account in this story where the story got close to getting to me, and that was simply the textural description of the Trogg's semen. Other than that, nothing else in this story was overly line crossing in its subject matter.

Another thing that is distraction is the 12" penis that the main character is endowed with. I never understood why authors who can't seem to understand the workings of the human body continually put disproportioned penis sizes in their stories. It detracts from the actual story itself, and is beyond realistic. Anyone who has read any of the medical and personal accounts of those blessed/cursed with said size understands that they are anything but pleasurable. Ron Jeremy has a 9.75" penis and has his own set of issues involving it, so 12" would be even worse.

I also found the final confrontation of the story to be fairly weak in its resolution, though the actual ending of the Trolly story was sufficiently Lovecraftian to make up for it.

All in all, if you are a Lovecraft fan, this story is a good one to read if you ignore the story that surrounds the actual story of 'Trolly No. 1852'. Had the book-end story been removed this would easily be a 4-4.5 star story.

I enjoy Edward Lee and realize most of his horror is tongue-in-cheek. However, dealing with Lovecraft and his mythos, I wish Lee would have treated it with a little more seriously. I can understand a lot of readers might have a problem with people trying their hand at Lovecraft. Personally, I don't care, as long as it is done well. We all know there is only one, real Lovecraft, so why not let others play around in his rich world and continue the mythos. That said, with "Trolley No. 1852", it was a bit of a mix for me.

The initial story about a fictionalized Lovecraft getting a secret invitation to submit an erotic horror story to an exclusive underground club was pretty cool. And the story Lovecraft ends up writing for it was fairly engaging as well, even if some of his made-up vocabulary was a bit awkward at times. You could tell Lee had a lot of fun writing it. One other thing that bugged me was that this was a reprint from a hardcover that was published a year before, yet it still had a few typos. A professional publishing house should have easily caught these mistakes and hopefully Deadite Press's other titles are cleaner than this.

Free from the restraints of his mass market paperback content, author Lee gives us the hardcore classic over-the-top sex that his fans have come to obsess over. His character's perverse escapades - a near trademark for Lee -- has allowed him to contract with more publishers than almost any other horror writer working today. From Necro Publications, Cemetery Dance, Bloodletting Books, and Leisure Books, to Infernal House Press, Overlook Connection Press, and his current publisher, Deadite Press.

The downside to Lee is that while his stories are wild and quite taboo, they are rarely scary and tend to be very predictable, once you become familiar with his common pattern of storytelling. I freely admit to laughing quite hard at some of his grotesque and libidinous descriptions, but as a fully crafted and original tale, this seemed only a notch above average. "Trolley No. 1852" is better than some of his Leisure titles, but this story would have benefitted more if Lee had given the tale a more serious tone.

TROLLEY 1852 by Edward Lee

Trolley 1852 is a raunchy, New England horror death trip starring our genres very beloved, very xenophobic author H. P. Lovecraft! It is based off a tale written by H. P. Lovecraft called “The Thing in the Moonlight.”

The Thing in the Moonlight was expunged from Lovecraft’s official publications by the historian S. T. Joshi, because it was partially written by Lovecraft (The beginning and end are not his own work.)

The author of TROLLEY 1852, Edward Lee, tells no bullshit and in this story, he channels Howard’s sprit from beyond the grave only to rape and sully it for our reading pleasure.

In Trolley 1852, H. P. Lovecraft is commissioned by an underground, pornographic magazine to write a horror story for a publication called EROTESQUE magazine. He ends up writing one of his most risky tales to date! The protagonist in Trolley 1852 is in search of his sister after she stops writing to him. His search eventually takes him to a bordello of carnage and pleasure and oh, what delights he has in that place! Does he find his sister? Will he escape alive? I won’t tell! You have got to read it to find out!

This story got all the bells and whistles that you would expect from Lee but believe me when I say that you haven’t lived till you have read H. P. Lovecraft writing as a smut novelist! Seriously!

The story has green towering monsters, tentacle madness, ill deprived sex and much more. Not for the faint of heart.

The ending is what got me, the very last few lines that tied the whole story together and made me spit out my cola. This is truly fine writing and I believe it to be Edward Lee’s best work to date.

Put on your top hats and monocles, boys and girls, this one comes highly recommend!

A spojení Lovecrafta s psaním erotické literatury?

I'm new to Edward Lee and not a huge fan of Lovecraft so I may have started off with the wrong book here. Overall, Trolley 1852 was a decent way to kill some time for me but I wasn't overly impressed with either the framing tale or the story within. Lee obviously loves Lovecraft, you can see this in his construction of the story down to the details of sentence structure and pacing but the story itself just wasn't very exciting to me and the sex scenes seemed to be played mostly tongue in cheek even the serious scenes that occur later in the story. In the story Lovecraft seems to be alluding to his own sexual prowess and endowments which seems kind of odd to because every piece of biographical information I have read about him seems to point to the fact that he had little or no interest in sex whatsoever so it kind of seems out of place in the story especially since it is so well crafted in Lovecraft's style. Like I said, this book is a decent way to kill some time but if you want something with more depth look elsewhere.

This is my first foray into Mr. Lee's work. Without question, his work is not for everyone. I found his writing exhilarating, fast-paced, compelling and, yes, quite gross. He is a true descendant of H.P. Lovecraft and he certainly does HPL honor with his emulation/expansion of his style.
This is a novella and involves, as Lovecraft's work often does, the discovery that something apparently ordinary is anything but.
Where HPL gave only the slightest hint of the erotic, Mr. Lee is overtly erotic. The question is whether the reader can tolerate the extent to which Mr. Lee takes things. Where HPL eschews humor for horror, Mr. Lee spices his horror with generous dollops of what must be considered rather gross humor. I found it hilarious, but many readers may not. I am glad to have found this author and will read as much of his work as I can. I do not believe he is for the typical reader of this genre.

Edward Lee imagining himself as H.P. Lovecraft writing pornography. There's a metafiction framing element that's more-or-less wish fulfillment for Lovecraft fans, but that's just a side-dish. The entree is your chance to see no-holds-barred porn meeting up with the stiffened syntax and expansive antiquated vocabulary of classic Cthulhu Mythos tales. Taboos are shattered, the universe is in jeopardy, and prostitutes are fun-loving and some have hearts of gold. The incorporation of Lovecraft personal details was clever, as was most everything in this story--but when I was done, I felt satisfied but not enchanted. I guess if you're not rendered queasy by the way Lee piles on the perversions, then you see behind the curtain a little too much--and then this novella becomes a good, workmanlike distraction.
