Perhaps the most enjoyable translation of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras I have come across! The Sutras are beautifully illustrated with B&W photography of details from temples and caves in India. An insightful introduction perfectly sets the stage to one of the oldest and most important work on philosophy.
Quite simply the most profound book I have ever read. With each reading a new depth is revealed. This translation by Alister Shearer is the clearest and simplest I have found. A foundational book in philosophy and spirituality for all humanity. 💐
This book is not really about religion. It is a translation of a Sanscrit text that records, for the first time, a science of mind and awareness that was passed down by word of mouth for untold centuries. I first read a translation of the yoga sutras in 1981, an I obtained separate copies of this superior translation in 1992 and 2003. I am reading this book again now, and will probably read it again and again, until I have memorized all of the aphorisms. Some of the text is supplanted by modern atomic theory, but much still seems to fit today's concept of Space-Time. Mystical, perhaps. But I am amazed at the science of mind and awareness that existed so long ago.
