Howard B. Wigglebottom is a delightful bunny that has a bit of difficulty with life. He encounters bullies. He doesn't listen. He needs courage.

Author Howard Birkow understands children's needs and the struggles they face on the playground and in the classroom. He and illustrator Jeremy Norton have put together a book that will help a young child manage the bully he encounters on the playground. The feeling he has to keep all his toys for himself and not to share. The tendency to not listen. And the need for courage to face obstacles.
In “Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns About Courage” Howard Binklow has his main character “Howard” face his fears and learn how to use his courage. This delightful tale depicts Howard facing the monsters under the bed, the dark, and the first day of school. All of these fears are exactly what young children face in their own lives. The reader can relate to the fears faced by Howard and they too can learn to work through the fear and develop the courage to be brave.

The continuing character building stories of Howard. B. Wigglebottom are always a joy to read and share with children. (rev.C.Delorge, librarian)

Our school has a collection of 11 Howard B. Wigglebottom books in its library and I have read each of them. Frankly, I can not pick my "most favorite one." Each is delightful. I recommend these for the young child and for the school or classroom library.

My Review: For the past few weeks Howard have been afraid of the dark, make believe monsters under his bed, loud noises, high places and scared of his first day at his new school that he decided not to leave his room ever again.

But while looking out of his window one day he saw a baby bird looking in. It was the most important moment of that’s bird’s life. It’s his first day of learning how to fly. But Howard was worried that the bird would fall. But he learnt an important message that day when the bird told him “if you’re not afraid, you can’t be BRAVE.” He learnt that even birds and superheroes are afraid but that doesn’t stop them from doing what they do.

For the first time Howard wasn’t afraid of the dark or the make believe monsters under his bed. He learnt it was okay to be afraid and slept well that night. He woke up the next day looking forward to attending school.

Children can relate to Howard’s fears. Children will learn it is normal and healthy to feel fear and that fear protect them from danger. The illustration by Jeremy Norton helps tell the story. I highly recommend this book for every household with children and for classroom teaching.

What a very special book this is! Both my 3 year old granddaughter and I enjoyed it. Howard is a bunny that is scared of most everything, the dark, loud noises, snakes and spiders, and beginning a new school. So he has decided since he is scared of everything to never leave his room that way he wouldn't have to be afraid of anything (except the dark and monsters under his bed). But one day he watches a baby bird fly for the first time. The bird tells him that regardless of if you are scared if you never try you can never overcome being scared. It's okay to be scared. And he flies. Howard thinks that is pretty special. And so he starts to believe in himself and faces his fears. Telling himself over and over "It's okay to be scared" or "I am afraid but I can do it anyway" or "I am brave" So very important for children to know this and apply it for themselves in their lives.

In the back of the book there is a page for adults to help children with their fears. Suggestions.
