Naughty Games, Book One

In honor of her friend's birthday, Bev Navarro does something she swore never to do again, enter Holden Lancaster's home. At one time the two had been part of a close-knit group of friends, but that all changed thanks to one game of Seven Minutes in Heaven.

Holden can't understand why Bev is avoiding him. He can only hope tonight's festivities will give them the time needed to mend old wounds. But one look at her face tells him he's in for a night of disappointments.

The birthday surprise is on them though, because they're receiving a gift neither will ever forget. The stopwatch is going, and the only question is, will they make the same mistake the second time around?

Lena Matthews spends her days dreaming about handsome heroes and her nights with her own personal hero. Married to her college sweetheart, she is the proud mother of two children, three evil dogs, and a mess of ants that she can't seem to get rid of.

When not writing she can be found reading, watching movies, lifting up the cushions on the couch to look for batteries for the remote control and plotting different ways to bring Buffy back on the air.

I wasn't sure what to expect with this one. The ratings seem to be all over the place and a lot of them without explanation of good OR bad, but some of my GR friends liked it, so that was a good sign. I thought this was really cute. We have a group of friends who met in college and have been relatively close-knit ever since.

Two years ago, at Holden's housewarming party, one of the friends decided to play Seven Minutes in Heaven. A little high-school-y, but hey... these are 28-year-olds. Maybe it was just nostalgia. And it gave Holden the perfect opportunity to pretend he picked Bev so he could finally get his hands on her. Throughout college, she was a study fiend. She was in a tough program and she had scholarships she didn't want to lose, so she was very straight-laced and focused. And then after college, she was getting a start in her career and needed to focus. Holden understood this, so he watched her from afar. Now he thinks he can take this chance to turn their friendship into so much more. Unfortunately, one ill-timed comment, and she disappears from his life for two years. She believes he picked her out of some misplaced gesture of gallantry, to save her from being mortified when nobody picked her. Which, to be fair, he sort of implied, but she didn't let him say the rest of what he was going to say. It was much easier for her to believe what she wanted when it so easily fit her own self-image.

So it's two years later and Holden is tired of Bev avoiding him. They've gathered at Holden's house for one of the boys' birthdays, and since the birthday boy is wealthy AND he realizes there are problems with the group's dynamics, he purchases gifts for certain people to share. For Holden and Bev, it's a stopwatch (a hint to Seven Minutes in Heaven). The other groups get flustered with their gifts because they're not ready to face the implications and either storm off or chase the ones who stormed off, leaving Bev alone with Holden. And Holden acts perfectly to finally get through her thick skull. And it's very hot. And an HEA.

This was a freebie, but I think I want to continue this series. We got enough story on the other two relationships for me to want to know how they all got resolved.

The writing wasn't bad but the conflict seemed forced and trivial in comparison to the amount of time that passed. Considering that this is the introductory story to a series, more time could've been taken. The lack of background work makes the characters come across as two dimensional and that leads to sex scenes that don't quite hit the mark. But I didn't hate it and am curious about the following stories.

So lame! I read all the time and thought this would be a fun read based on the reviews. WRONG. I can not believe how many people gave this good reviews. Clearly the people who reviewed this book were teenage girls! I'm embarrassed that I read the book.

Favorite quote:

“I’m willing to concede at most the problem lay with both of us, but with me being the one who…might have accelerated the situation to a proportion that was…maybe…not as critical as I thought it might have been.”

I'm glad I read Matthews' Joker's Wild series first (Call Me is on my DIK list) - Seven Minutes was enjoyable, but we don't get the same attention to character development that's so important in bringing a novella from straight erotica to erotic romance.

Matthews writes some *smoking* hot scenes, but I needed more than sex and the "party games" premise to make me want to pay $5 each for the next two books in the series.

This was a really great free read from Amazon. The reason I enjoyed it so much is because I felt it utilized the opportunity to introduce new readers to the author, Lena Matthews, and left you wanting more. At least, I was left excited to pick up the next book in the series. This was a great introduction to a group of friends that over the years have become attracted to and have paired off. Except no one has had their happily ever after so each book in this trilogy explores what went wrong and how each couple can find their happiness. There’s a lot of good guessing on what went wrong, some strong emotional pull between the characters, and a lot of sexiness. And what I really loved is that since this book only explored the relationship between Bev and Holden, I can’t wait to get my hands on the rest of the series so I can read along while everyone finds their HEA.

If I'm going to get alliterative here, I'd say this book is nicely naughty. It gives us some good backstory on the characters and some nice sexin'. I tend to like the friends to lovers story lines in shorter books simply because we don't have to go through the whole "meet and greet" before they get to the bed play. And, let's face it, that's the main reason I pick these sort of books up.

This book was a free Kindle download I picked up on 04/24/12 for the Why Buy the Cow? reading challenge.

The beginning was decent, but somewhere in the middle it tanked, and then it tried to swim back to the surface.

High-Points: Romantic Angst among 2 friends, "initial" dialogue that was great

Low, Low, Low Points= Goofy Sex talk, bad dialogue.

This book could have been & should have been a lot better. If I had actually bought this, instead of downloading it for free on Elloras Cave's website (jasminejade.com), I would have been really upset.

Giving this one 2 stars.

This was my very first romance novel. I thought the love scenes were well written, lots of good descriptions. The plot overall and the back stories were so-so. I also wanted to find out more about the other friends; how did their weekend turn out?

This book has piqued my interest in other romance novels, so I'll be sure to check more out. I think it was a good introduction to the genre for me.

The Naughty Games series by Lena Matthews was definitely what my erotica romance mood needed. Not only did I get some great characters, but their stories were really engrossing despite having a very obvious plot. Once I started both Seven Minutes in Heaven and I Never, I couldn't put them down.

I enjoyed this story. Holden was the male character type I adore. Bev had the right about of bite. It was short and sweet. If you are not used to reading "filthy" words like P***Y and F**K, or any graphic sex, This isn't the book for you.
There are people who would complain about the length of the story..I am not one of them. I believe it was a perfect introduction to the next 2 book.
Lena Matthews had definitely one of my favorite authors, so far.

I liked it, but didn't love it. A good little friends to almost-lovers to enemies to lovers story. I found it hard to believe that Holden would wait two years to actually confront Bev about their relationship and the game that drove her away. He called apparently, but never physically went to see her or forced the issue...didn't strike me as true given his take-charge attitude about everything else.

I was addicted to Lena Matthews when I first got my Kindle almost 4 years ago. I've had this book on my Kindle for a long time so I decided to finally read it. Lena can really write erotica but I've come further along now. I want a substantial plot in the books I read. I am curious about the other couples so I'll continue the series since I've already bought the books but I need more substance!!!

I got this as a freebie from Amazon and I found it interesting. There was no point in the story where I didn't care about the characters and I was cheering on our hero to get his girl. I would love to read Shane's story, but decided I didn't want to pay so much for such a short story. But who knows? Maybe I will. We'll see. :)

This was a Kindle freebie and a short one.
The setup for the series is well done. The conflict between the hero and heroine is a little overwrought - it's a classic misunderstanding thing. The sex was smoking, per Ms. Matthews usual.

This is a fun, quick read.

An erotic story that read like a bunch of high school kids. Even the premise of the games were things done in high school. It had way too many loose ends branching out to entice you to buy further novels when the material in this one was lacking.

This book was a nice, steamy short book that will get your blood pressure going but not drag you down with too many details. This is one of those books you read in the tub or when you just want to be alone with a book. *insert evil grin*

A nice short story. I was looking forward to Holden calling Bev out, and was glad when it happened.

Really looking forward to reading the other 2 stories in this series.
