If you are planninga trip to Austria or Germany, this is a must read before you go. Filled with wonderful tips on customs and manners, I am sure it will contribute to making your trip abroad better.
I've used this book several times since it first came out (there's been at least one update to the book). I've had two years of college-level German back in the '80's, but for the most part don't use it. The last three times I've been to Germany I've used this book to brush up on pronunciation, grammar, and customs/culture. I ordered the previous edition with the cassettes that accompany the book, and found it a good way to spend the flight over -- I can easily get through the book and (now ripped onto my iPod) cassettes.
I've found this book invaluable and a handy reference.
My wife is a Spanish teacher and has had no German, and found this book to be an excellent help to learn the basics of grammar and pronunciation.
Highly recommended for the rusty German speaker and the novice, alike.
Perfect way to get the basics in German under your belt.... and it's all done in a fun easy to read style. There are even little quizzes throughout to test your language skills. The books is too big to take out with you during the day, but it is great for reading on a long trip or before you head out in a German speaking country.
Um, this book may have been more interesting if I hadn't just finished a semester of college German. I learned a bit more travel related words instead of school related ones, but I already knew the nominative and accusative cases and how to conjugate verbs. I feel better prepared to rent hotel rooms, though.
This is a good reference if you want to learn some useful German phrases that you may use on your trip like “How much is this?” “My name is…” “I’m from…” etc.
There are also small exercises after each chapter to better help you as well. Overall, it’s very helpful.
