Tim Burton has reinvented Hollywood genre film-making over the past three decades. With a visual style inspired by the aesthetics of animation and silent comedy, Burton's work melds the exotic, the horrific and the comic, manipulating expressionism and fantasy with the skill of a graphic novelist. Published to accompany a major career retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art, this affordable volume considers Burton's career as an artist and film-maker. It narrates the evolution of his creative practices, following the current of his visual imagination from his earliest childhood drawings through his mature oeuvre.
Illustrated with works on paper, moving-image stills, drawn and painted concept art, puppets and maquettes, storyboards and examples of his work as a graphic artist for his non-film projects, this volume sheds new light on Burton and presents previously unseen works from the artist's personal archive.
Acclaimed American film-maker Tim Burton (born 1958) is known for his dark, gothic films about quirky outsiders, many of which are both Hollywood blockbusters and cult classics. To date they have been nominated for 16 Academy Awards and have won six. They include Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (1985), Beetle Juice (1988), Batman (1989), Edward Scissorhands (1990), Batman Returns (1992), Ed Wood (1994), Sleepy Hollow, (1999), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Corpse Bride (both 2005) and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), among others. Alice in Wonderland is slated for 2010. Burton has collaborated extensively with composer Danny Elfman and with actors Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.
There's news that Tim Burton's coming up with an art book called The Art of Tim Burton. It's going to have 434 pages and should be released soon or early next month. This is not that book.
This book simply titled Tim Burton is an exhibition promotion book. It's published by The Museum of Modern Art to accompany the Tim Burton exhibition that's running on 22 Nov 2009 to 26 April 2010. The exhibition is going to have over 500 pieces of art created by Tim Burton himself.
In this book are only 64 pieces of art, and there are only 64 pages. You'll see coloured sketches, storyboards and sculpted models. It's a bit underwhelming but at least his creation and ideas are really cool to look at. Some of his work date back to the 80s when he's just starting out. Even then, his sense of design and artistic style is already established. There are also a few pieces of his personal work which are not related to movies.
For those interested in the story of Tim Burton, there are two essays of his inspiration and career, briefly looking through the different stages of his life.
I wish for a more detailed biography in the future. Tim Burton has created too many good movies and animation not to have one.
This little book should serve well as an exhibition guide, but will definitely leave the fans wanting more.
I highly recommend holding back the purchase of this book to see what The Art of Tim Burton has first.
In this book, we take a tour of the creativity of Tim Burton. A show of his extraordinary private collection. Information about why and how he made the movies, he made and the paintings, etc.
I found it very interesting to read about Tim Burton's youth and why he became the man he is today. I visited one of the expos a few years back and saw most of the painting and sketch ideas they describe in the book.
If you like Tim Burton's movie styles then this book is definitely a recommendation for you.
I only wish this book was longer! :) Wonderful artwork! I'm so thankful that I saw the Tim Burton exhibit while I was in NYC. Because of that exhibit I recognized many pieces included here. Definitely check it out if you are a Tim Burton fan!
Favorite lines: In the end, creativity is the saving grace of Tim Burtons heroes, whether they appear on paper as many-limbed, multitasking monsters, or on screen as woebegone humans sculpting shrubs and ice, inventing tall tales, directing exploitation in films, slitting throats, or surviving Wonderland. Their example of imaginative activity, as a response to conditions of disconnection and isolation, is the overarching message of Burton's work.
Burton is the conductor at the center of this collective creativity, and his films thus far are evidence of his distinctive individual stamp.
I love Tim Burton. His twisted sense of humor and interesting designs have captivated me since I was very young. My parents actually took the VHS of Nightmare Before Christmas away from me because I wanted to watch it every day. To this day, it's still one of my favorite movies. This was a companion to a show at the Museum of Modern Art, and I so wish I would have been able to make it! I knocked a star off because I really just wanted more than 64 pages.
A book prepared for the MOMA show of original art by director Burton. Many images I’d not seen before, including preproduction art for several films. Only 60 pages, but they are full of interesting images.
Barliant, Claire (ed.) (2012) «Tim Burton» MoMA The Museum of Modern Art. [Ron Magliozzi and Jenny He, 2009 Exhibition catalogue, Paperback, 64 p. (Sixth printing, 2011)].
The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other Stories (1997).
While I'm not a huge fan of his later work it was still cool to get some insight into his inspirations and how he's changed film-making. The art was definitely a highlight for the book
This was interesting! I really like Tim Burtons drawing style and I enjoyed learning about the inspirations behind his art and movies! Tis grand, fun to flick through!
This book is what I would consider a fair introduction to Tim Burton's work. It doesn't go crazy in depth to his life or work. So just be aware of that when you go to read this book.
