Daniel Jay Millman is an American author and lecturer in the personal development field. He is best-known for the movie Peaceful Warrior, which is based on his own life and taken from one of his books.
1. Balance – remain calm in midst of your daily life. 2. Choices – decisions are made with acts, not mere words. Toward life, love, service & connection. Accepting. 3. Process – breaking to small steps, see stage not just destination. 4. Presence – focus attention on now, not regrets – concern – confusion. 5. Compassion – forgive yourself & offer others compassion 6. Faith – trust inherent love and intelligence working through you & all creation. 7. Expectation – focus on solutions, every positive thought is a prayer which will be answered. 8. Integrity – live in line with your highest vision despite impulses to the contrary. 9. Action – do what is best rather than just have an excuse. 10. Cycles – change is the only constant, leads to greater awareness, wisdom & peace. 11. Surrender – make use of the situation, with appreciation. (water) “Thy will” 12. Unity – we are not as separate as we appear, all are students – teachers – a part of you.
An allegorical story/parable sharing wisdom similar to books like The Secret, this was an interesting, mildly entertaining story meant to appeal to those curious about following a spiritual / metaphysical path. A little on the woo-woo side for some, I enjoyed this for how beautifully narrated it was.
It took me a while to finish this book. It’s the kind of books you really need to read twice or more to finally comprehend the writer’s word. Some sentences you can quickly pass by and some really need thinking and understanding. Dan Millman is clever and a very wise writer. He really showed some wise ideas and pattern of thinking or the laws of spirit as he wishes to call them. The 12 ideas he mentioned each are supported with several examples for the reader to comprehend them. However, as the sage in the story says, those ideas cannot be memorized but they are to be implemented and practiced.
What I can say is that this book is a great book and the only reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 is because the writer didn’t introduce the characters very well and wasn’t engaging enough.
Easy read. Skimmed through it. Knew most of what's in the book from previous books. More suitable for first time readers about wisdom & life.
Free will means that you can choose to abide by the laws that speak within your deepest intuition or you can let impulses, fears and habits run the show. Pain has many faces, no matter what life dishes out you get to choose how you will internally respond, you can resist and resent it, bemoaning your fate or you can face and embrace it, expanding into the moment. Choice is giving up something you want for something else you want more. Be present in the moment. Be compassionate to yourself. Judgements are a human invention. Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle - Plato Faith dares the soul to go father than it can see - William Clarke What you see depends on where you look. What you expect you will find. Before you can do something you have to believe it. Live in line with your highest vision despite impulses to the contrary. Integrity is about how you behave when no one is watching. It takes courage & vulnerability to achieve authenticity. Differentiate between ideas & action. Those who climb enjoy the view. Surrender means accepting whatever happens in your life. An active, positive, creative commitment to embrace & make use of your situation, in a spirit of appreciation.
This was a great book I'll read over & over again. It's exactly the way I see life. I found myself agreeing with what I was reading, as it resonated w/in my own spirit! I look 4ward 2 reading more of Dan Millman's books.
Idk bro I like these stories where abstract principles or concepts are personified into an archetypal figure, and I like the way it’s written and whatever.
In fact, I’m into like 70% of the teachings. But then there’s 30% where I’m like, what bro? I mean I’ve heard 10 million ppl come and tell me about self love and how it’s necessary to help others and I’m like, why?
Like if I see a bum on the street, I don’t walk by and say “gosh, I have an extra $100 in my wallet, but I’m just not sure I’ve found myself. In fact, the journey never ends, so I guess he’ll just have to go wanting.” And I also wouldn’t say, “golly, I’m not looking to deprive this lost little kid from the chance to become more actualized by finding their way home without my help,” I’d probably just help.
And you know what, I’ll bet you $25 that the mother who gets the kid back ain’t gonna say, “you brought my kid back, but from where? From the precipice of opportunity into the forest of limitation? Who are you, who is so lost, to have guided my child back to me? Sure they’re here, but they would’ve been equally here had they stayed in that Target bathroom I forgot them in, because they are me and we are they and I am you and you are me and therefore they are here with me and are me.”
My bet is that they’ll say, “holy crap, thank you, that’s really cool of you to do, super glad my kid wasn’t left in a Target bathroom.”
Also, if I just left the kid alone, I don’t think the cops will believe me when I say, “I thought so positively about their return home, I was shocked to find out that they got kidnapped in the end.”
Unlike most other self transformation or new age (depending on how old you are) read actually tells a story while giving you the laws of the spirit. Like most books in its catagory, the same message is given, just worded differently than those that came before it.
Just like Waiting for Autumn, the book is about a man who meets a sage who has lived several lives and takes him on a journey through woods and mountians. All the while the man realizes how clueless he is.
As someone who is well read in metaphysics I would not make this your first read; I would start with something like The Secret or any law of attraction book. I feel that trying to tell a story makes it less interesting than just learning and could easily steer a curios reader away from a whole new life. I would read this only if you are interested in having a story to follow along while you are learning.
Unfortunately, describing the laws and how they would fit into your life would require a much longer post. I will be doing that post on my Wordpress. But, if anyone is interested in that post; please contact me and I will talk to you one or one or direct you to the post.
I usually love books in this new age philosophy genre, but this book was not for me. It took me under and hour to read it, it's only 100 pages, which I think may have been part of the problem. This is a fable of a mans journey through the laws of spirit that all should live by to have a full life. I thought that the description of each law was more informational than the lesson demonstrating it. It was flowery and didn't really say much of anything. I was left wanting to know more and wanting fewer cliche's. This is the only thing I have read by this author and I don't think I will be reading anything else.
For such a small book, it packs a spiritual wallop.. At least in my case. It takes you through a journey with a person seeking the answers to the questions we all seek, and gives comfort, focus, and goals setting skills , if you choose to use them. I would recommend this book as a follow up to the Peaceful Warrior trilogy ( I count Socrates Journey in the trilogy) It helps to wrap all the Peaceful Warrior lessons into a concise little package that you can review time and again. Was quite helpful to me in order to obtain a better balance in life and to stay focused.

I felt this book was an interesting book and a easy way to get in touch with living to your truth. It has been told as a fable, which I feel can have more of a impact sometimes, because you follow along with a story picking up wisdom as you go. I found myself high-lighting some of the quotes as I went along, which to me must be a good sign. Overall, a good book and a well told story, especially If you are beginning on your spiritual path.
• What would your higher self, your enlightened self, advise you? Use this question to tap into your sacred self.
• If one focuses only on the journey's end, completion always appears in the distance. This leads many to abandon their goals when obstacles arise, or when the path grows steep, you know that every journey begins with a single step, but you must also take a second step, and a third, and as many as necessary. The law of process is nature's assurance that we can achieve essentially any goal, no matter how lofty, by breaking it down into small sure steps. This may seem obvious but most overlook it. ... This reminds me of Andrew Hubermans reminder to focus on each step, make a goal out of each step, and mentally reward yourself for each reminding yourself of where those steps will lead you.
• A vision that inspires you will pull you like a magnet towards it. Choose a goal that shines for you. You don't discover it waiting for divine revelation. Go towards what attracts, excites, or in inspires you. Go towards what touches your heart. Ask yourself what's worth the effort in the sacrifices that come with the commitment to any goal. ... Once you figure out this, the larger vision, the direction you want to go or the land you wish to arrive at, then break down the journey into a process of numerous steps.
• "Few things are certain in this world, but people rarely ever fail, they only stop trying." ... Be fluid like water. Keep flowing. Water can carve paths through even stone.
• Focus on taking life one step at a time until you get it right. When patience and discipline join forces, they become a persistence that ensures past the peaks and valleys, to carry intentions to completion. Enthusiasm sets the pace, but persistence reaches the goal. Process, patience, and persistence are the keys that unlock the doorway to any destination. ... Don't forget though, the process is a fruit in and of itself. That said, the process or journey is much more enjoyable when you know you're going the right way.
• Law of Presence - time is a convention of thought and language, a social agreement. Regrets of the past are sense impressions now. Anxieties of the future have no reality outside of the mind right now. Your ability to pull back your attention to the present improves with practice. Stop letting problems live your head. Concerns of the past and future are like delusions in the head of a crazy man, with no reality outside hallucinations. ... When you establish peace by accepting and living the reality of the present moment being all that is, then equilibrium will be established within you, and you will attain more free will over your thoughts. Then instead of being at the mercy of the weather of the mind, the flow of random and often toxic or unconstructive thoughts, instead you will be peacefully present and there will be silence in the mind unless you choose to think, and because peace is the baseline, a solid foundation, then the thoughts you think intentionally will be constructive, production, and pleasurable in nature.
• Have faith that all the decisions you make are the correct ones, that will lead you to your enlightenment, even if the results aren't immediately desirable. Believe this and it will be.
• What you see depends upon where you choose to look, and where you choose to look depends upon what you expect to see.
• We are all one organism. One mind. Unity and oneness are available to all, one must simply let go of the illusion of seperateness. This can be glimpsed when ultimately present with someone, when the boundaries between you dissolve, and all that's left is consciousness. When being with them is the same as being alone. Both the same source through different eyes... This reminds me of that experience on the Sturgeon Supermoon trip, where L and I meditated looking into one anothers eyes. Boundaries were gone - boundaries are those which make you self conscious in others presence, which makes you fear what they think of you, how they see you, that makes you fear judgement and that makes you judge, that identifies with and sees only flesh, not spirit. Those were gone briefly that day. It's in that state where we feel at home in the universe.

The Law of Spirit by Dan Millman as smooth. It blends universal ethics with a fictional tale that makes it easily digestible. I wanted to read this book since March 2019. While on a trip in Baltimore, I stopped into a Barnes and Nobles to browse. Can't remember how I found the book, but when I did I read/ opened to the chapter of "Integrity". There was a quote that stuck with me, not allowing me to forget the book- I'll write it at the end. About two months ago, I decided to search for it while in Barnes and Nobles in CT. There was one copy- I grabbed it.
The book host 12 Laws of Spirit, each containing its own chapter. A fictional woman character guides the main character through the woods while teaching him lessons, spiritual lessons, in the process. The examples are displayed through the environment and obstacles they face. Each lesson / law builds upon the one before it. the main character asks questions and inquires on grey areas. The Sage (fictional woman) swiftly paints the answer by forcing him to look within.
For my spiritual journey it was the cherry on the cake. It let me know that the Godliness or ability to do the right thing is already embedded within everyone of us. In my life there have been times where I questioned why doing the right thing when that's not the majority. In short, life is what you make it. While some people are content with chaos, dysfunction, and feel its "normal" - there are those who understand it doesn't have to be like that. there are those who are Honorable, and by following the herd or doing wrong it eats at their character/soul. Either way, knowing that there is an invincible silent system of luck, fortune, which can determine results of situation in one's life, gives motivation to stay on course.
My favorite understanding that came was that we are all of one similar to leaves of a tree. Therefore, treat one another with compassion and love- that is the goal of human existence. Also, the law of integrity resonated with me.
I recommend this book the the youth especially, but anyone looking for motivation to be better.
Dan Millman walks readers through a series of twelve laws of wisdom through a story in which the main character, a traveler, learns from a wise sage. (I visualized the story as myself learning from my High Self.) I appreciated how Millman wove nature into these laws as the sage and the traveler wander a mountain. The nature aspect was a constant reminder to come back to ourselves—back to our humanity.
My favorite of the laws is the Law of Expectation. “Energy follows thought; we move toward, but not beyond what we can imagine. What we assume, expect, or believe creates and colors our experience. By expanding our deepest beliefs about what is possible, we change our experience of life” (57). I found myself asking, “What are my core beliefs that set in motion self-fulfilling prophecies?” For example, perhaps I believe a coworker to be uneducated. I may treat her differently simply because of this belief. These beliefs affect my energy, which will either draw people near to me or further away. We have incredible power to use positivity to shape our lives (62). Millman reminded me of the importance of setting intentions and visualizing joy and fulfillment.
Another favorite law of mine is the Law of Surrender. Sometimes we try to swim upstream and resist every situation that comes our way, but it is sometimes best to go with the flow and surrender to the situation. Each problem that we encounter is training us to reach our highest selves.
This tiny book held huge nuggets of wisdom. I know I will return to it again and again.
This is a tale of a wonder filled weekend beyond time and place. I have read most all of Dan's books beginning with a book that truly changes lives, Th Peaceful Warrior. This book is now my favorite because of its very direct impact on my awareness. This book is a guidebook for world transformation and points to the new level of a consciousness that we are all destined to find. It is a world of perfect paradox where we are unique individuals but knowing no separation between us as people, non-human animals, plants, soil, water, sun, moon and all beyond are for all time ONE. We each create our own stories of a lifetime and make our special contribution to a living story of ongoing and infinite creativity and magic.
A quick, easy read. Thought provoking and grounding. A good reminder. I see myself returning to it again in the future.
I love the sage/student trope - I think it’s a great way to educate an audience without feeling like it’s preaching at them. I like that the sage was a female - often they are wise, old men.
Given it was published in 1995, it seems very forward thinking. Sometimes when I read self help/personal development/spiritual books from decades ago it can feel outdated. This felt timeless to me. It was refreshing.
I absolutely love this book. It supports me when I have questions or need some other perspective on a situation. The laws of spirit is a book that can be read daily, or a book study with close friends to discuss the reading. I don’t even put this book on the shelf. I keep it near my reading chair, as I use it often. It really helps me in making decisions. It give me a sort of purpose on becoming the person I want to be I. This world.
Wow...wow...wow, this is an absolutely must read. This book takes principles of the universe and provide practical examples of how to apply these life lessons to live a spiritual life. This is a book for everyone, and it does an excellent job showing how we are all connected to one spirit. We learn to live a life that expresses unconditional love to all people. I highly recommend this book!

This was a good read outlining the spiritual laws that exist in the universe. I never realized that these were spiritual laws even though I was familiar with all of them. I enjoyed the way the book was written with the author meeting the sage who explains the laws to him. I will look at life differently now being aware of the spiritual laws and how they work in my life. Great book.
I like books that use parables to get deep messages across! I think this book is best read in small bites so one can reflect on the message. It got pretty heavy at the end - and I might need to reread that bit a couple times! I also think the meaning and what you take away will depend on what is currently happening in your life at the time you read it! This book was sent to me when I needed it! Thanks my friend 💖
If you have read the "Shack" then you will enjoy reading to quick, easy, straight, and to the point read. I learned so much in such a short time about the spirit. This book is not boring at all. The mini lessons of explanation you would think would be pure common sense, but we as human flesh make things so much more difficult. All I could do was laugh. So worth the 110 page read. My kind of book.
Highly recommend. Knocked it out on a day off. Didn't reAlly put it down. Made my earth bound self reconnect with my higher self. A lot of work I have been putting off. Thanks again Dan, will likely hand a few of these out during Christmas to the less dense friends and family.
A small book that describes universal principles. Relatively easy read with pleasant narrative.
There are 12 core principles that underlie human existence: balance, choice, process, presence, compassion, faith, expectation, integrity, action, cycles, surrender, and unity.
