This book is a great introduction to Second Life for a newbie. It also includes chapters on more intermediate skills and though I can't speak to these (being a newbie myself), they seemed pretty comprehensive. The author has a self-professed passion for building things, so the book explores those skills.

I used this book to get an overview of Second Life and tips for customizing my avatar. It was one of the few books I found that was clear and descriptive without talking down to the reader. The author explains the basics without assuming knowledge (even giving explanations of common lingo which was very helpful to me).

Definitely a good guide for those who are new to Second Life and those are are beginning to create homes or objects.

There's something disturbingly, well, VIRTUAL, about reading a book to learn more about a virtual world. I've been curious about Second Life because there's been a lot about it in the library literature. However, I haven't wanted to take the time to visit it and play around with it -- I'm too busy with my first life! So I skimmed this book in about an hour yesterday to get an idea of what SL is all about. It's a great introduction. If I was actually going to play around with SL I'd probably buy this as a reference. My only complaint is that I would have liked more pictures, but I understand why the author didn't include them. Recommended.
