On the verge of womanhood, Lucy Horne is excited and nervous about her first Season. Despite being the belle of every ball, she can't seem to quell her feelings for a man she has met only once before—the enigmatic and dashing Captain Jack.

Linda was born in Swindon. Her family moved to Ely in Cambridgeshire when she was nine, and Linda attended the local school but left at fifteen to work as a hairdresser in her father's business. She was married at eighteen and ran her own hairdressing business for some years before moving to Cambridge, although Linda has now moved to somewhere a bit quieter in Cambridgeshire. She started writing in 1976, combining this with helping her husband to run his antique shop.
Writing as Anne Herries, Linda won the 2004 RNA Romance Award and the Betty Neels Trophy. She lives in Cambridgeshire. After many happy years of taking their holidays in Spain she and her husband, now have a second home in Norfolk. Being only a short drive, they can visit for a few days at a time, which suits their busy lifestyle these days. They are only just across the road from the sea, and can see it from their windows. At home and at the sea they enjoy watching the wildlife and have many visitors to their gardens, particularly squirrels. Anne loves watching their antics and spoils both them and her birds shamelessly. She also loves to see the flocks of geese and other birds flying in over the sea during the autumn, to winter in the milder climes of this country. Anne loves to write about the beauty of nature and sometimes puts a little into her books, though they are mostly about love and romance. She writes for her own enjoyment and to give pleasure to her readers.
I'm awfully glad I won this one. I would have bought it, for the title alone of course, and it wouldn't have been worth the $5. I liked it, don't get me wrong, but Lucy is SUCH a Mary Sue. Actually, Captain Jack is a practically perfect person, as well. They're both so nice and so good and so noble and of course there are misunderstandings, but they get worked out quickly because clearly, they meant well and were doing the Right Thing and the other understands that entirely. Also, there were an odd number of murders and attempted murders. Just, hmm. Not a winner. Except for the title.
An enjoyable story about Lucy Horne, who is 18 and about to have her first season. She has already met a man she would like to know more about - Captain Jack Harcourt, but he has a secret and a reputation around town, he also thinks he is too old for Lucy.
Love finds its way though.
There are 2 other books in this series of 3 sisters, Marianne, Joanne and Lucy. Marianne's story is told in Marianne and the Marquis and Jo's story in told in Married by Christmas.
I read this without reading the two books before this one in the series and for once it did not matter and I truly liked the well fleshed out characters. I really appreciate Herries telling enough of the back story that I don't feel I need to read the other 2 books in the series, but I will be looking for other books by Herries, no doubt.
I enjoyed this book very much. It was a sweet, gentle romance, the way Regencies ought to be. I have grown tired of hero and heroine fighting and hating each other, so this was a breath of fresh air. Lucy is sweet and pure, as I imagine a good Regency lady ought to be and Jack was just so gallant he has become one of my favorite romance heroes. The misunderstandings between them never went too far, the deep, dark secret was believable and the lovemaking was passionate without breaking the Regency feel of the novel. Best of all, this story included a real wedding rather than an elopement or leaving it out altogether. This book would have earned five stars from me, but the author had a tendency to tell rather than show which dulled the story down.
I liked this book and enjoyed reading it the story line flowed well and was believable along with the character development. The story was different and interesting especially when you get into the series.😊
«Io ti adoro, Lucy.
XD
I tought it would be better. Captain Jack wasn't the rake I was expecting him to be. Lucy was innocent and then suddenly all grown upp because of a gown and her hair. So just 2,5 - 3 stara from me. Read 15. Sept.
I gave up on this very slow, boring book half-way through it. It also annoyed me that all the women did was talk about dresses, the latest parties and waltzes. Meanwhile, the men had much more interesting lives of having mistresses, cheating at cards and committing murders.
