Fordyce Kerrich has a dirty, little secret. He’s a zombie – a hybrid zombie, to be exact. For a hundred and thirty years the Blue Dust teen has been on the run. He’s been running from the seekers who want to kill him, running from reality, and running from himself. But things begin to change when he meets Krista. Krista’s everything he’s ever wanted in a girl. She’s smart, beautiful, and she takes the word ‘strange’ to an entirely new level. Fearful of telling her the truth about himself, Ford soon discovers that Krista’s keeping some secrets of her own – secrets that could change everything. With the seekers closing in, Ford and Krista strike out to discover the truth about the past while carving out the future, and the trust they have in each other is the only thing that’s going to keep them alive.
I won a copy of this book in Elle Casey's 2013 January Anniversary Indie Book Giveaway.
There is much here that is good: the two leads, Ford and Krista, are very strong and likeable characters. I liked that Ford was goth-by-necessity, and that is was Krista, the seemingly 'normal' golden girl, who had the obsession with death (although the coffin thing does get tiresome when repeated ad nauseum). The way their relationship evolves is satisfying, if a bit thinly explored. The "non-zombie zombie story" concept is cool and intriguing, but it's also where the book ends up running into some problems.
I think I would rather have had the immortality of the "blue dust" people remain unexplained than be given an explanation with roots in Haitian voodoo. Now, I do not know anything about the author's background - for all I know the author could have Haitian roots herself! - but I don't think that it's relevant to the book's having a whiff of, how shall I put it... white privilege and cultural appropriation. Especially considering the climactic scenes near the end.
If you're of a mind to handwave those issues, this is a fun read! I am curious to see what else this author has written.
Picked this one up as a freebie, glad I did. This is not your usual zombie book with blood and gore, more Haitian voodoo zombie. The Blue Dust of the title describes the offspring of a group of 19th C shipwrecked survivors who were turned into zombies. These offspring have blue birthmarks and when they reach a certain age whether 18 or 80 their nails turn blue and they cannot die except by beheading. It has a little sweet romance, action and adventure, a very easy read.
