Another caveat to this. Mike is a friend of mine who has covered a variety of genres in writing. Probably his best, well-known, book is a non-fiction book called Soldier Dead where he looks at how the US deals with its military dead and the military dead of US opponents.
Anyway...I have this on my eReader and forgot it was Mike's book when I started reading it. So, I'm halfway in and completely sucked in to the story before I checked the author and realized it was Mike.
I like books which set the action in the first 3 or 4 pages and then the rest of the story deals with the consequences of the initial action. This is critical in a short story and, sadly, most authors seem to write short stories like they're a full blown novel so, they mostly just collapse into incoherent storyline for the bulk of the book and an attempt to tie everything together in the last five pages.
This is a mildly science fiction oriented story with an unlikely self-sacrifice storyline.
Character driven, Gerald's Star pulls us, effortlessly, into the lives of four men. At the heart of the story is a heroic that doubles as a tragedy. I felt I was with Gerry and Karpov on their journey, both together and separately. The final scene surprises and infused an unexpected Joy. We need more from this author. Well done!
Engaging storyline that was very believable. Wonderful characters. Everything rang of truth. Very. Very moving and uplifting with no sugar coating. Beautiful prose
Mike Sledge has an amazing talent with words. From the first page I was pulled in and did not stop reading until I finished. The flow of words immediately transports the reader into an expertly woven and poetic story. I look forward to reading much more from Mike Sledge.
