Much like Jumanji, this is a book, based on a film, based on a 40 page book. I've never read the original WIlliam Joyce book, so I have no comparison to this, but I watched the film again recently. The film is definitely not one of my favourites, as it's quite manic in parts - too many writers and ideas I feel. It does make for a good story but for some reason, I never find it particularly memorable.
The book is 140 pages long (100 pages longer than the book its based on) and just covers the main points of the film. There are a couple of very minor insignificant changes to dialogue, and some of the more action heavy scenes are skimmed over. Simplistic language is used, to it's suitable for being read to younger children, although older children will still enjoy it too. There's no additional scenes, as I have come to expect from Disney novelizations. (Irene Trimble is the author and she has done a few other Disney novelizations.)
There are some photos included from the film, which are glossy and colourful, much like the film itself. The characters don't have much description, beyond what you see on screen. There is no additional background to any of the characters and Goob is sadly forgotten about - I still feel like the film is set up for a sequel/spin off for Goob, but that has never happened in the 13+ years since the film's release. I always wondered what made Wilbur go back in time as well - there are obvious reasons, but I wish the book (and film) had delved a little more into these reasons.

First things first the movie was better and also this was my book with pictures challenge for BOOKTUBEATHON 2014!!

This was a good book how ever I do wish the author had done more to make it more interesting. I look forward to reading more of this author's work.
