60 high-yield cases in Obstetrics and Gynecology help you to excel in the clerkship and improve your shelf-exam score You need exposure to high-yield cases to excel on the Obstetrics and Gynecology clerkship and the shelf-exam. Case Obstetrics and Gynecology presents 60 real-life cases that illustrate essential concepts in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Each case includes a complete discussion, clinical pearls, references, definitions of key terms, and USMLE-style review questions. With this system, you'll learn in the context of real patients, rather than merely memorize facts.
The whole series is fantastic for review and learning. Helps you understand elements of OB/Gyn that you might breeze past on placement. Excellent cases and review questions. I utilized the series for each placement I could, and I felt better prepared and educated.
AKA - Sam studies for SHELF - because for all the hours I clocked in, you best believe it counts towards the Goodreads reading goal.
As with all my logged textbooks / prep books / Case Files, I didn't read this one straight through, but used it sporadically over my clerkship to supplement my learning.
The strength of Case Files is step-wise discussion for specific patient diagnosis or problem presentations, with practice questions for each chapter, making it easy to tailor studying towards my weaknesses.
The OBGYN Case Files was useful for testable material, but felt as if it lacked nuance for discussing woman's health concerns with real patients (which is perhaps beyond the scope of a SHELF prep resource, but a comment to be made none-the-less) - for example, nuances about birth control options for women with PCOS, and deeper discussions about menopause and its presentations.
An excellent resource for the Ob/Gyn rotation of medical school. Each case is 3-8 pages, which makes for short enough chunks to read in some of the downtime between surgeries or while waiting for laboring patients to get closer to delivery. I liked that the information was delivered with vignettes, and found this to be a mostly enjoyable way to study (as far as that can be the case).
Additionally, it does a great job of covering most of the relevant material for the shelf exam which I supplemented a little with Blueprints. I recommend it.
(For context, I am 3rd year medical student in an integrated community clerkship at a Canadian university)
I found this book to be very well written and easy to read. The cases provide a great starting point for developing an approach to common gyne and obs problems, and now that I am finished it I feel appreciably more confident in handling these kinds of cases that may walk into the ER or maternity ward.
However, like all of the Case Files books, I think it needs to be combined with a good standard review text (like "Step Up To Obs/Gyne" or the ACOG textbook) for maximum impact.
Excellent book! Great for clerkship rotations. Easy to fit in a white coat pocket, and the cases are quick enough to fit in during down time on the units. Great questions following each case. Solid, fantastic book. Helped me to great on the shelf exam.
This book helped me prepare for my OB GYN final. Again, it was a comprehensive collection of the common clinical OB GYN cases that are encountered in primary care medicine. Overall, a helpful resource to prep for final exams and the LMCC Step 1.
