Ghosts of a Coven Past

Rate this book
A powerful witch with a mission to bring the child of Satan into the world lies dead and buried under an 1885 rowhouse in Allentown, Pennsylvania, held in place by a combination of hex and the spirit of the young woman she had impregnated. But when Roger Nimanator and his family take possession of the house, the witch discerns in him an open door to the spirit world.

The old witch gets a grip on Roger and begins to move in the world again, her spirit hungry for vengeance and for the coming of the Dark Lord. But Roger has awakened to his abilities and has gained a powerful ally in a modern-day witch and healer. Together they are determined to put the old witch to rest for eternity.

But the witch is wily and she has found allies of her own—a legion of them. Including one of Roger’s twin boys.

A master of manipulation and deceit, with Satanic powers growing, the old witch is on the verge of bringing her vision to reality. All she has to do is feed Roger’s doubt and the world—and his soul—are hers and the Dark Lord’s for the taking.

GHOSTS OF A COVEN PAST is a remarkably engrossing and superbly constructed Supernatural Horror offering featuring a creative premise and strong characterization throughout . Combining elements of Pagan, Christian, and Roman Catholic belief systems, the novel does contain some occasional avenues of Extreme Horror, as exemplifying the incursions of Evil into our world. Basically the overarching theme is Light vs. Darkness, but I found the overtone more Judeo-Christian and Dark Arts than Lovecraftian Cosmic Horror, but still a riveting read.

A decent page turner.

I've never come across this author before and decided to give this book a go as it was a stand alone and different to what I've been currently reading.

The story revolves around two women murdered as witches centuries before, whose spirits are awoken unintentionally by a man with psychic gift. A battle ensues between the three of them which spreads to the present day community.

The book alternates between the past and present but as there are no chapters it sometimes pulls you up sharply when the times change.

The proof reading could have been better, nothing that really spoils your enjoyment, just annoying, eg Tryan becomes Tyran then back to Tryan, and basic errors.

Having said that, I found it to be a good read.

If you like this genre then give it a go.

the premise of this book is awesome. i really enjoyed the story at first… but as it continued it got incredibly confusing, and was all over the place with so many different story lines going on. Towards the end another one was thrown in, that i have not a clue where it came from or why it was even remotely relevant?
it may have been easier to understand if this book had chapters, but it was one big story. no chapters…with so many different points of views constantly changing, and with so many of them, only being seperated by a paragraph with no warning of when the POV is changing, it made this story SO hard to keep track of.
i really wanted to like it but sadly did not

And the constant misspelling of the word “spirit” drove me insane.

Fast paced with plenty of detail. There were no chapters so the action seemed a bit jumbled. Maybe a longer story, chapters and time to breath in between interactions, otherwise loved it.

The battle between good and evil, or the battle between light and darkness, has dominated literature, religion, and culture for thousands of years from Zoroaster to Shakespeare and well beyond. My favorite horror genres are demonic possession because I truly find demons to be the most terrifying concept ever created. They are malevolent, evil, and without a shred of humanity. When I was in graduate school getting my M.A. in History, I spent a lot of time reading the pre and early modern witch treatises and novels, writing endless papers about Satan, the Sabbath, and the female body. Great times. So, of course, this book is right up my alley. Roger is a simple man who isn't aware of his spiritual impact, and unfortunately, he settles just above where the devil almost reigned. With his arrival comes the strengthening of an evil that has lain in rest for centuries. But no more. Now, Roger has to save himself and his family, and indeed the world, from the coming of Satan itself. There are multiple perspectives in this book; it's not just Roger's story, but rather the stories of many people both fighting against and for evil. Sort of reminded me of The Stand by Stephen King. You watch people battle evil but also watch as some succumb to their darkness, which is only empowered by the strengthening evil around them. There's a white witch, the unfortunate mother of darkness, the evil witch trying to summon Satan to earth, a confused and wounded young girl, an angry and rejected man looking to hurt others, and a lost little boy. The change in perspective gave the story more depth and complexity. I truly enjoyed the book and there were moments when even I was grossed out-- there's a lot of violence against women, and this sort of stuff bothers me even more than demons. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes horror, hauntings, dark stories, and the supernatural.
