Writing under Stratemeyer Syndicate pen name Carolyn Keene from 1929 to 1947, she contributed to 23 of the first 25 originally published Nancy Drew mysteries. She was one of 28 individuals who helped produce the Syndicate's Nancy Drew mystery books from 1929 to 1984.
Edward Stratemeyer hired Benson in 1926. She was paid a flat fee of $125 for the first Nancy Drew book written using an outline provided by the syndicate.
Gypsies have put up camp at the edge of town, and Peggy Palmer and her friends went to their camp to find a fortune teller in order to get their fortunes told. well, not Peggy, because she was just going along for the ride. She must know that palm reading is not real. But then the camp is raided by the police while they are there. They came to clear the the gypsies out. The fortune teller quickly gives Peggy a bracelet, and then Peggy is caught with stolen property. Ah, gypsies, they always get a bad rap, an undeserving one at that. It is said that they steal your chickens, your jewelry, and worse of all, your children.
Peggy and a friend of hers are driving around and find an old shack on Crooked Lane. They get out of the car and walk up to his door. An old hermit lives there, and he asks them into his house, but Peggy is afraid that he will harm them. I am no longer sure how this all ties in with the bracelet that the gypsy woman gave to Peggy. But I assure you, it does. I will also assure you that this was a very good book.

Mildred Wirt was the writer of the Nancy Drew books, at least 20 of the first ones written, and she had written other books under her own name, as well as under different pseudonyms. She did the Penny Parker series.
This wasn’t an easy book to find. I had to go on eBay and buy it used. Had it been in real good condition I would have had to have paid $150 to $200 for it, but in poor condition it was only $30. The spin is somewhat cracked. I also bought one other book in this series for the same price but in worse condition, Ghost Gables.
The Series:
1. The Clue at Crooked Lane 2. The Hollow Wall Mystery 3. The shadow Stone 4. the Wooden Shoe Mystery 5. Through the Moonstone Door 6. Ghost Gables 7. The Painted Shield
This series does not have the same characters in them.
Although I enjoyed this book enough to give it four stars, it was rather trite. Peggy Palmer meets a girl whose uncle/guardian mysterious disappeared several years ago. Then she meets an old miser with amnesia who fits the uncles description.
