The ancient city of Messara is threatened by an endless tide of veil demons. Its own army is far off. The only hope of survival is for Messara’s 400 dragon knights to hold the pass at Brisken.
The story opens with a flashforward, to the ragtag remnants of this force, still holding out, but facing an insurmountable horde.
Then the narrative moves back in time, to when the knights received their mission. And thus begins an epic tale of heroism, valor, and sacrifice.
SPOILER
The concept is similar to 300/Thermopylae. Or any other military engagement where a few stood against many.
The twist here is that their own king betrayed them. Deliberately sending his troops away, protecting the dragon, and feeding villagers to the veil to create the demon army. All for the goal of weakening the dragon knights, whose power he fears.
And the second twist is that the dragon knights figure this all out, but it doesn’t change their goals. They are sworn to protect Messara and its people and so defend the gap at all costs. So we come to respect the will, courage, and honor of these maidens even more.
Tension builds as the days wear on, as the fiends keep coming and the knights’ forces dwindle.
There are a couple other subplots. One with Tora, who is on the cover. And one with the youngest apprentice, Naelle. These are woven in skillfully and heighten the emotional impact.
At the end the order of Ishtar provides relief just in time to save the last few knights of Messara. At their head is a young Oris, and beside her, the axe crone, both from volume 2.
This was a simple tale but expertly crafted and immensely powerful. Hats off.
Didn't enjoy this one. Most of the characters were stereotypes, and you didn't get to know any of them well enough to care much what happened to them. This one's mostly about political pessimism and displaying all the character-designs they couldn't think up a strong enough storyline for.
Wow, loved this issue!! Very tense, political, action-packed,... It had me sitting on the edge of my seat the entire time Just amazing stuff right here..
