The Flying Flamingo Sisters #2

The Flying Flamingo Sisters 2: A Tale of Derring-Deux

Rate this book
The Flying Flamingo Sisters—Flo, Faye, and Franny—are back for another hilarious, heartfelt, and soaring adventure in their barnstorming biplane! This highly anticipated sequel from best-selling author Carrie Seim will delight fans of Indiana Jones, Encanto, and Lemony Snicket. Performed as a 1930s radio drama, it’s bursting with humor for all ages, orchestral scoring, and famous voices from stage and screen.

Convinced that their dastardly uncle Freidrich has escaped with their family fortune, the Flamingo Sisters return home to the Upper Lower Valley Mountain Rural Region in despair. But when their beloved mentor Elsie de la Rue goes missing—and they discover a new clue that may lead them to their lost Golden Flamingo—the three sisters take off on another thrilling chase in the skies! They join the death-defying pilots of the Women’s Air Derby, then hopscotch from New York to France to Egypt, determined to stop their uncle (who believes girls should never fly aeroplanes) from spreading evil across the globe.

The Flamingo Sisters must use wits, courage, and derring-do to solve secret codes (and sibling spats), trek through terrifying temples, rescue their ace pilot parents, and save Elsie de la Rue. Not to mention themselves!

I’ll be honest and say I didn’t expect to enjoy this audiobook as much as I did. The first audiobook was good but didn’t exactly wow me as much as this one. I recently saw this on my audible page as a recommendation. It was free and short so I thought why not give it a listen. I’m very glad I did because this was a pretty perfect middle grade listening experience for me. I love the introduction of new characters that “The 99” brought us. Elsie de la Rue is always a bright spot too. I would have been satisfied if this would have been the end of “The Flying Flamingo Sisters” adventures. It isn’t the end though, and I’m not sure where the story could go from here. I’m willing to find out though.

A fun and cute children’s story about the continued adventures of the Flamingo sisters. This time the sisters are trying to find a family treasure before their uncle gets to it. The current pop culture references are silly in a story set during the Great Depression. Very entertaining.

5 stars! This was hilarious! Listened on Audible, completely performed by a talented cast. The whole book sounds like an old time radio show. It reminded me so much of The Series of Unfortunate Events. Highly recommend for the whole family. This was book 2 so I would start with book 1. I hope there will be more!

Book 2 of my first ever Audible Original. Now that I am over the novelty of new media, I was able to focus more on the story - of the importance of family, of owning up to one's own skills and good old fashioned good over evil. As enjoyable, realistic and engaging as the first, this is solidly a middle book. On to the next adventure! 😀

2024/12/30 Notes:

Series Currently on Audible +

- Excellent Cast of Narrators
- Production quality was not as good as the first book. Not sure what happened there.
- Story voice wasn't quite the same as the first story and felt a bit rough in comparison. Still, a fun story for kids.

Onto the next book of the end of the year reading rampage! XD

Just as entertaining as the first in the series. Very cute story.
Although, I was a little confused by the Taylor Swift reference, considering the story was supposed to be set back during the Great Depression... But that's totally forgiveable considering how innovative this series and story style are.

If you haven't listened to the first book, The Flying Flamingo Sisters, you've got nothing to worry about. This audiobook has a whole chapter dedicated to explaining the events of the first book in so much detail, you can skip over the first book and just listen to this one.

The sisters are lucky enough to locate their parents but instead of the parents being good parents (for a change), they just disappear once again into the mystery of the story. I'm not exactly sure how the sisters not once felt a sense of abandonment or spoke about the fact that their parents weren't around because in reality, that would raise a lot of red flags. Oh and it turned out, the parents were extreme hypocrites and no one even batted an eye about it.

Then there were all the moments of the sisters stumbling into messy and difficult situations but these were all just mentions of the struggles instead of actually portraying any real struggles. Things just happened and the story moved on. The villain was exactly the same and gave the story the same feel the previous book did. I expected the stakes to be higher or at least an addition of another villionase character but that was asking for too much.

The first book I actually enjoyed but this one was pretty disappointing.

My 7 y.o. quirky daughter enjoyed listening to this old-timey adventure story with me. She liked the action and the characters. I liked the recurring bits, strong vocabulary, and how they worked in little facts about the vocabulary/explained particularly tricky parts to the audience. It was an easy and enjoyable family listen.

Well , in short I think this was a good filler book in the series where you travel around the world and get some visuals going on.. though I'll be honest I don't care for the cliff hanger of this book and probably will not be quick to pick up the next book.

Cute, predictable and fun. I wouldn't mind listening to it again with young children in the car, but otherwise, probably not. It has a sort of "Perils of Pauline" plot with the female leads being a lot more capable than "Pauline" ever was.

As one might guess, there is a feminist message here. It is mild and inconsistent. The evil villain is trying to stop all women from being pilots. Exactly why is never explained. If he thought that women were incompetent pilots, the story itself with the wild flying involved should have convinced anyone that women can be excellent pilots. On the other hand another woman falls for the villain's proposal of marriage as if she didn't realize that he was a villain. She looked ridiculous which isn't all that terrible. After all, this is a comedy.

There was one serious aviator mistake in the story. The plane's wheels became stuck in the sand and one of the characters commented that the wheels could not get TRACTION in the sand on takeoff! The wheels of airplanes are not powered. Therefore the only traction they ever get is when they are landing and the brakes take hold. Then traction might make a difference. Otherwise the wheels of airplanes are free wheeling so to speak.

I would be glad to listen to this audiobook again with kids in the car but otherwise, probably not.

This was another fun romp in audio adventure.
The author utilized lots of alluring alliteration, particularly with the frolicking letter F.
Even the news bulletins are filled with frivolous folly.

Uncle Frederick is once again the viscous villain, the funny foil to the flying Flamingo sisters. I love how he can never get their names correct! 😜

The true family treasure is knowledge. How great is that? Yet couldn’t the family have a few pieces of gold to save their hangar? Ah well.

Sadie’s bay wings were brilliant and Frankie the wing walker again saved the day - multiple times. Never underestimate a girl or a determined aviatrix!

We thoroughly enjoyed listening to the first one last year. When my family saw a second was released we listened again to the first for a refresher and dove into this book! Just like the first, this is a cheesy & fun story about 3 sisters. Their adventures searching for treasure and all the wild people they meet along the way. Definitely an enjoyable listen for the whole family!

Only listened to this because in 2020 I listened to the original so I got an alert a sequel was out and don’t remember if I liked it or not. Production was great but overall just okay. Definitely very kiddish which I don’t necessarily mind but sped through it on chipmunk speed as a change of pace between my usual reads.

A satisfying sequel for those who enjoyed the first story and wanted it to continue. The girls continue their adventure to find the true family fortune. The story picks up where the last one let off and continues many of the same running jokes. This one did explore more tension between the sisters, which I enjoyed.

This is such a fun book! All of the children I know will be getting this series. Such a quirky book full of laughs perfect for kids and will keep the adults interested as well. It’s full of fun catchphrases, adventure, interesting history trivia and even some fun geography facts. Perfect for a long drive to listen too.

An absolutely wonderful continuation of the tale of the Flamingo Sisters. As an adult woman who was always looking for book adventures staring girls as a child/adolescent/teenager these books are great. I recommend them to the grands both female and male.

I really enjoyed listening to this one (and the first one) with my daughters. They love that the main characters are three sisters. The plot kept me engaged, but was still simple enough for my 7-year-old to follow along. As soon as it ended they asked me to see if there was a 3rd volume available.

A decent sequel to the first book in the series (which was amazing). A bit too reliant on anachronistic jokes and also in tropes from the first book. Still—entertaining. And our daughter has listened several times.

My kids love this series. The Audible originals have a full cast and are performed like an old time radio show. The plot is not super amazing, but the entertainment factor is there. Great for people who are fans of alliteration.

These Sisters must all be leos

They are always in the middle of drama . . . And granted I understand this take place during The Great Depression and drama was probably regular but this uncle of theirs is the worst. And Flo getting attention from all the boys is cute.

Silly, funny, and fun.

Very pro girl, but in a fun way. I enjoy the different voices and positive messaging. Not quite as good as the first book.
