Kiyoshi Nagai (永井潔 Nagai Kiyoshi, born September 6, 1945 in Wajima, Ishikawa), better known by the penname Gō Nagai (永井 豪 Nagai Gō?), is a Japanese manga artist and a prolific author of science fiction, fantasy, horror and erotica. He made his professional debut in 1967 with Meakashi Polikichi, but is best known for creating Cutie Honey, Devilman, and Mazinger Z in the 1970s. In 2005, he became a Character Design professor at the Osaka University of Arts. Since 2009, he is a member of Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize's nominating committee.

Devilman parte come un manga che vuole raccontare una storiella sul solito ragazzino puro di cuore che è dotato di una grande forza. Questa forza, nella fattispecie, gli viene data dalla possessione di un demone. Battaglie con i demoni, con i teppisti che prima lo bullavano, la ragazzina che non se lo filava che ora si innamora...tutto fin troppo lineare e noioso.
Fino al volume numero 4.
Già nel 3, strutturato in maniera completamente diversa rispetto a tutti gli altri, si cominciano a intravedere dei risvolti che possano muovere la grande trama generale.
Il numero 4 conferma il tutto: i demoni? Solo un escamotage: qui si parla di quanto faccia schifo il genere umano, i demoni sono solo una metafora per inquadrarli e ridurre il tutto al sempreverde discorso bene vs male.
Sì, mi piace, ci sto. Vediamo il numero 5.
Fino all'ultimo capitolo prosegue come il numero 4: denunce ai mali della società, alla crudeltà dell'uomo, ai suoi comportamenti contro se stesso privi di senso.
Poi c'è l'ultimo capitolo...e lì la situazione si rovescia. Sono passati 20 anni dalla conclusione del capitolo precedente e finalmente scopriamo perché abbiamo letto tutto quello che abbiamo letto.
L'uomo, gli angeli, i demoni, Dio, Satana...ognuno ha di che lamentarsi di come vada il mondo, analizzato dal proprio punto di vista.

What a strange series this turned out to be. It had some pretty good moments, nice art, some really great gore, he took some interesting chances here and there, and a few of the story elements were neat. What pulled this manga down, though, is the fact that Nagai (at least when he wrote this. I haven't read anything else from him at this point) is an awful, awful writer. His dialog is terrible, his exposition is crammed down your throat in the weirdest places (This is an actual, paraphrased interaction: Thugs: "we are going to rape your girlfriend!" Main Character's response: "I walk home with her every day because I am living with her family for the time being!"), and his plotting and pacing are all over the damn place. It goes from a drama, to a monster of the week story, to a post-apocalyptic fever dream, to a...I don't know what. And it all happens faster than you can get your bearings straight. We get a crazy demon fight or two at the beginning, but by the end all the fights are just narrated to us without showing us anything ("we fought, and this happened and that happened"). Characters are introduced like we are supposed to care about them, and then they are just thrown away to never be spoken of again.

Overall, this was barely interesting enough to trudge through once, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone nor would I ever read it again.

Terribile il finale del manga. Ma in fondo, la parte peggiore dell'umanità è proprio questa. Qui Nagai mette in scena la sua personale Apocalisse, e molti sono i sottintesi, compreso quello che l'amore può portare ad incommensurabili distruzioni.
Il pessimismo verso l'umanità è basato su quanto abbiamo vissuto nel XX secolo, pertanto non sono esagerazioni quelle che Nagai propone. Ciò dovrebbe anche far pensare a quanto vicino all'Apocalisse globale siamo giunti nel XX secolo, specialmente alla metà del secolo.
Comunque finora posso dire che se non è un capolavoro, il Devilman originalmente pensato da Go Nagai è comunque un'opera decisamente controcorrente per il periodo in fui fu pensata e prodotta. Trovo diversi passaggi disturbanti; l'idea che tra uomo e demone non ci sia nessuna differenza di fondo, ad esempio, oppure che nella lotta tra Satana-lucifero-Ryo e suo padre, il Dio della tradizione giudaico-cristiana, abbia vinto il primo e si sia ibernato coi demoni suoi seguaci per la battaglia finale.
Solo che la battaglia finale contro gli angeli non avverrà, perché l'umanità è venuta alla luce, e Satana fa lo stesso errore che ha imputato a suo padre, ossia combatte l'umanità come Dio ha voluto combattere i demoni.
Alla fine, giacendo a fianco al suo amato Fudo, ormai cadavere, probabilmente ucciso da lui stesso, riflette sul destino in una enigmatica doppia tavola con gli angeli che arrivano luminosi. Il senso recondito di questo terribile finale mi sfugge e non credo sia chiaro nemmeno all'autore.

Volume conclusivo, pervaso da un'atmosfera cupa e apocalittica..
Il modo in cui viene rappresentato il genere umano non è molto lontano dalla realtà odierna.
Il finale lascia l'amaro in bocca ma penso sia una degna conclusione di questa storia..

This manga is definitely a classic! The art style is so vintage! The hairstyles and the clothes... it just screams the 70s. It’s lovely to read and experience. The story is very detailed and easy to understand. I love the fighting scenes because they’re so well made and, dare I say, remind me of Berserk a bit. What I love most about this story is the hidden meaning behind it; what are monsters and who are the monsters really? Humans, demons or both? How do humans react to anything that’s different, something they can’t understand? What does fear do with humans? Etc. And this manga isn’t afraid of being brutally honest about mankind and its weaknesses. It’s on my top list of the best mangas I’ve ever read 💔❤️
Plot; “Two boys find out that there are demons in the world who will relatively soon try to kill all of humanity, and so they seek to combat them even if that means giving up their own humanity and/or sanity in the process. And even if that means destroying their friendship.” 5/5 🐼🐼🐼🐼🐼 - an absolute joy to read! Just that they’re fighting with their eyebrows gives it the highest rate lol. I recommend the anime available on Netflix too very much!

I am filled with utter sadness but I’m glad that it’s canon that ryo is bisexual. Miko shone in this, love her to pieces. Also I loved how the big reveal was handled, it was far more built up and you got to learn a lot more about ryo and the story through his perspective. Downside: some of the characters were not as developed, and I sorely missed miko’s presence throughout this.

Veramente una storia inaspettatamente appagante. Credevo che chi mi parlava di Devilman fosse un po’ di parte, magari annebbiato dalla nostalgia… invece devo ricredermi. Tanti spunti sulla natura umana, sembra un approccio tezukiano. Tanta azione e creatività nelle varie forme dei demoni. Capisco perfettamente perché ha avuto e ha ancora tanto successo: all’epoca dev’essere stato una vera bomba!

An apocalyptic, memorable conclusion to what is, quite frankly, otherwise a quite dull and overrated series, much of which is quite simplistic and not at all as thought-provoking as I was told; Though seeing mankind turn against each other in the last two volumes was somewhat harrowing.

Honestly, just watch Devilman Crybaby, as it's the superior story and better than the original in most ways.

Devilmen are in China, Satan and the devils having a rising bright sun sort of imagery. The obvious God Nukes and the whole thing at the end about the demons becoming the "god" type oppressors for humans in the cycle of war and violence is very messy as an analogy but I'm glad it exists because it's something I would never have thought of myself with crybaby and is a cool....marker of Nagai's history/politics beyond the obvious anti war sentiment that most post WW2 manga of this sort have.

Also so conflicted about Miki because on one hand for Akira she very much represents the ideal of humanity and in crybaby they make her literally that so it works when akira is like ah yes Miki is the last straw of humanity keeping the devil part of me from running rampant and doesn't work as well here because Miki is not THAT different or any more empathetic/having a human heart than the others. But that's also really cool because she goes from no i can't harm my neighbor's to blowing them up with molotov cocktails but even her cool #girlboss moments and generally her being more toxic/complicated is still weighed down by how...she's just sorta doing what the (male) characters around her tell her to.... So it's nice to have crybaby miki sort of... Have any sort of grounding whatsoever but I still think this Miki is cooler

This got deep. All the plot holes and unrealistic pacing of the events don't even matter. This conclusion to the series is amazing. Depression and awe at this ending.

Update
With the adoption of my new rating system, a five star rating is befitting. The original review and original rating conform to the new rating system. The blending of Christianity into this pop form and the multiple tragic deaths have impacted me greatly. This is a quintessential five star-rated book and a rating change is impossible, even if in the future I dislike the "Devilman" series.

I have though of lowering the rating of the volume because I did not believe that everything in the volume contributes or amounts to the five star-rated feeling. I am fine in allowing the five star-rating with a green and grey outline colored rating. There is buildup for Ryo's background, Akira's revealment on television, Miki's last stand, the death of Miki's parents, and the downer ending. Definitely a green and grey outline colored rating. The description of the 5EE rating type that I have given the book perfectly explains the buildup: ""“A book with a bit of buildup for several sections that then buildup to a supreme ending. I view of this book as a pyramid, with already a great base of scenes that then buildup to an even higher point before reaching a peak crescendo, the five star-rating. The book and its scenes feel consummate”. There are some minor points like plot holes or strange pacing that kind of bug me but I ignore it because it does not hurt the previous mentioned stuff".

Un'opera maestosa e fondatrice, capace di innovare la narrazione classica di bene e male rendendola attuale a distanza di decenni. Non a caso "Devilman" è alla base di tantissime altre produzioni fumettistiche giapponesi e occidentali, che da Go Nagai hanno tratto ispirazione - visivamente o nella scrittura dei personaggi.
La storia di Akira Fudo e Ryo Asuka è la storia del genere umano stesso, dello scontro perenne tra valori umani e istinti animali, di "amore e odio", al tempo stesso introspettivamente e in relazione agli altri. "Devilman" è da considerare parte della lista di opere letterarie da leggere almeno una volta nella propria vita.

Il volume più bello dei 5; critica sociale, storia cupa e molto cruda, sceneggiatura migliore degli scorsi volumi, interessante dall’inizio alla fine e scorre benissimo.

Già dal volume precedente si avvertiva un cambio di rotta, ma da questo le carte in tavole vengono completamente cambiate.

In fondo se è così acclamato una ragione c’è, davvero bellissimo.

Once upon a time, demons invaded the world, wiping out all prehistoric creatures that once ruled the earth. After dominating all life, they ruled the world for many long years until the great ice age froze them in burials of ice deep down in the underworld. After the demons were lost to history, a new race called humans were born, and they became the new rulers of the world. Left undisturbed for thousands of years, the humans were ignorant of the threat of demons lurking just under their feet. In the modern age of technology, industrialization and political turmoil, the demons begin to rise once more, merging with corrupt humans to pollute the world with violence so they may rule once more.

Mankind’s only hope for salvation is to use the demons’ power against them, and only a pure-hearted man like Akira Fudo can do so without losing his humanity. Once, he was little more than a timid crybaby, but Akira now wields the terrible power of a devil, yet holds the innocent soul of a man; he is a Devilman. Akira gets dragged into a dark world of conspiracy, betrayal and bloodshed by his best friend Ryo. Ryo's father was a genius researcher of the occult who left many records and findings informing them of the oncoming demon invasion before he was possessed and took his own life. Now the two friends are the only ones with the power and the knowledge to save the world or lead it to its destruction.

Devilman has quite the legacy. It's very rough around the edges and it definitely shows its age with some stale dialogue, major pacing issues, one dimensional characters who react unrealistically, etc, but all of these things are to be expected since it was written in 1972 around the time when the medium was just beginning to find solid ground and can be considered the grandfather of all modern horror, dark fantasy and mature adult manga in general. It heavily inspired countess classic masterpieces and memorable modern tales such as Berserk, Attack on Titan, Gantz, Neon Genesis Evangalion, Parasyte, Death Note, Tokyo Ghoul, as well as the works of Junji Ito, Naoki Urasawa and Satoshi Kon. Hell, even many non-horror series have drawn inspiration from it such as Yu Yu Hakusho, Inuyasha and Dragon Ball. You could say that Devilman is to manga what Lovecraft is to modern horror.

Though it does struggle to move itself forward at times, the lore behind the demons, the origin of the main character merging with a powerful entity which is used in many modern series and the emotional climactic ending are all fascinating to see. The author also utilizes a lot of real-world literature to set the foundation of the plot and backstory. In the world of Devilman, the events of Dante's Divine Comedy and the Christian Bible are things that actually happened, it also brings in a lot of historical references and events such as the Salem Witch Trials, Black Sabbaths, WWII, race feuds, slavery and colonization. It's one of the first series that created the 'humans can be more cruel, terrifying and monstrous than actual demons, monsters and wild animals' plots that we've seen done thousands of times.

It's definitely a tad corny and poorly written in some places, but it's great to see where many modern storytelling tropes originated from and how it inspired so many of my all-time favorite series. The Netflix adaption Devilman Crybaby is also a very cool modernized retelling of the original story and I honestly prefer it over the manga a bit.

«Voi sareste gli essere umani che io ho giurato di proteggere sacrificando il mio corpo di uomo?»

Quando, con le mie titubanze iniziali, ho deciso di cominciare Devilman, tutto mi sarei aspettata tranne la piega che questo volume prende. Credevo che fosse una storia sostanzialmente classica, con il tipico protagonista dall'animo puro che tenta di contrastare le avversità con tutte le sue forze – un comune shonen, dove il bene riesce sempre a prevalere alla fine. Ma non c'è nulla di comune in quest'opera di Go Nagai, e non c'è neanche una conclusione lieta. C'è solo il male, in tutta la sua inevitabile brutalità.
Più si procede con la lettura, più si resta sconvolti dalle atrocità che impregnano le pagine. La reale natura di Ryo, l'uccisione dei coniugi Makimura, la decapitazione di Tare, Miki fatta a pezzi, la distruzione completa della razza umana – un crescendo dell'orrore, che culmina con la battaglia decisiva tra i demoni e l'esercito dei Devilman, tra Amon e Satana, tra Akira e Ryo. Dello scontro, però, non viene mostrato quasi nulla, perché Go Nagai preferisce concentrarsi su un ultimo dialogo tra Akira e Ryo. Satana ripercorre tutta la storia dei demoni, dalla loro creazione al loro ritorno sulla Terra abitata dagli uomini, rendendosi conto troppo tardi dell'errore che ha commesso decidendo di sterminarli tutti.
Solo alla fine, quando chiede perdono ad Akira – l'uomo di cui si è innamorato, che ha spinto a diventare Devilman nel tentativo di salvarlo dal genocidio dell'umanità –, realizza che ormai anche lui è morto, che si è abbandonato ad un sonno eterno.
Finisce così "Devilman" di Go Nagai, un'opera che è riuscita a sconvolgermi nel profondo con tutta la sua splendente amarezza e che sono orgogliosa di aver aggiunto alla mia collezione manga. È un pezzo di storia a cui tutti dovrebbero approcciarsi una volta nella vita, soprattutto per la critica lucida che il sensei fa alla natura sostanzialmente malvagia degli uomini.

well, this sure was an experience.

i don't think that i will ever wish to reread this series, nor do i recommend it to anyone. However, if you still want to read it make sure to listen to Kensuke Ushio's "Crybaby" whilst doing so (especially when reading this volume). The soundtrack of devilman crybaby is heavenly done and it fits the series so much.

Until fourth volume dialogues were straight up terrible, they got slightly better in some moments of fourth and fifth volume. The animated series are far more enjoyable.
Though i must admit, it was interesting seeing the origin of Akira and Ryo’a relationship. And yes, Ryo is indeed in love with Akira. I cannot understand why are some people so dense and still try to deny it.

“To tell the truth, i only wanted to give you the strength to survive in the new world! I didn’t want you to disappear along with mankind..”

and if that wasn’t clear enough, you even have this:

“Everything was flawless, everything except..you…you fell in love with Akira Fudo! You ended up sacrificing Amon to give Akira a chance to survive the extinction of mankind!”

The ending is highly saddening and heartbreaking, still, it was portrayed better in devilman crybaby and i stand behind my words.

“You fell asleep, huh? An eternal slumber…”

With this i’m officially done with the devilman series. It could’ve been done better, but we must appreciate things that we already have, because greediness will do us no good.

La situazione degenera completamente con la comparsa in TV di Ryo: servendosi di un filmato contenente la trasformazione di Akira, Asuka riesce ad instillare ancora più paura e sfiducia tra gli esseri umani, spingendoli a dubitare addirittura dell’identità dei propri cari (“Gli uomini sono così spaventati dall’idea di attirare sospetti su di sé che finiscono per alimentare voci sulla possibilità che il prossimo, senza distinzione, sia un diavolo.”). Il vero intento di Ryo è quello di riaffidare il controllo del pianeta Terra ai demoni: proprio in questo volume, infatti, scopriamo che la sua vera identità è quella di Satana, risvegliatosi circa due anni prima e deciso a confondersi tra gli esseri umani per comprenderne gli usi ed i costumi.

L’intera storia si concentra in definitiva sul predominio che i potenti tentano di instaurare sui più deboli ed in particolare sul fatto che la coscienza umana è disposta a tutto pur di garantirsi la salvezza (“Per fuggire dalla paura del diavolo… tutti gli esseri umani si affannano a diventare coloro che incutono terrore”). A tutto questo si ricollega la crudeltà dell’essere umano e ancora una volta la paura del diverso: Ryo racconta addirittura che lo stesso Dio che ci ha creati provava riluttanza per i diavoli, motivo per cui egli stesso si era ribellato al fine di salvare la sua gente.

Ryo indaga sugli appunti del padre e dichiara che i demoni possono essere ovunque, che si impossessano delle persone, creando scompiglio tra gli umani. La famiglia Makimura teme Akira, poi però decidono di difenderlo, fino a morire per tentare di aiutarlo. Akira infatti al contrario dei demoni ha il cuore umano.

Ryo rivela di essere Satana, ha dato i poteri ad Akira per portarlo con sé nel nuovo mondo. La Terra si trasforma in un inferno,gli uomini si uccidono tra di loro spaventati dalla presenza dei demoni, ma così facendo loro stessi compiono azioni terribili. I demoni mettono fine al genere umano, Akira stesso muore.
Satana si rende conto di aver ucciso la persona che ama.

Uno dei manga horror più iconici che hanno fatto la storia del genere, con una concettualmente forte e con delle scene splatter molto disturbanti. Ryo dicendo una bugia ha trasformato gli umani in bestie, tirando fuori un lato che noi tutti abbiamo e che a volte viene tirato fuori in maniera troppo semplice.

Given it was a product of its time and all, with dialogue being mediocre at best and having absolutely no character development, the last two volumes of Devilman bring home the idea the author was playing around in the first pages.

It was bleak, gut punching, gory, raw and transmitted a lot of things with little to no dialogue. I know understand why, even with the glaring faults it has, it's considered a classic and how shaped new voices and artwork even today.

If I can be completely honest: my god, holy hell, what a read this last chapter was.

Degno finale per questo manga che sottolinea come la coscienza degli uomini si fondi su ciò che pensano di loro gli altri, che evidenzia come determinati comportamenti possano diventare addirittura virtuosi se giustificati dal pubblico e conferma la necessità che, di tanto in tanto, ci sia bisogno di qualcuno che creda in noi, specialmente quando dubitiamo delle nostre stesse capacità.

去年NetflixでDEVILMAN crybabyを観た時から原作もいつか読みたいなぁってずっと思ってて、やっと読めた。デビルマン、やっぱすごい話だ。(DEVILMAN crybabyを観た時は原作の話を知らなかったから、特に終盤の展開、ラストが衝撃的すぎて放心状態になった。)
ところでこの文庫版、1巻の巻末の著者あとがきで結末をネタバレしているのだが。。。

Damn that last volume went by quick as hell so much happened. Man. Ryokira..
