Quite an interesting book, told from Carson Beckett's POV. I was glad that Carson didn't simply stick to his convictions rigidly. By the end of the book he understood why the leader did what he did, he understood that, with the means available and with no one willing to help, they really didn't have much choice. I think the point of this book was the understanding that it's easy to criticize when it's not you doing the tough decisions.

I really liked this audiobook. It was narrated from the perspective of Carson Beckett, who was always one of my favourite characters in Stargate Atlantis, and to me, is very much like the episode Inferno but told from a different perspective with a disease thrown in. It was pretty good, and a quick read.

Carson Beckett, volcanoes, an apparent plague and making fun of Rodney. What more could you ask for? Paul McGillion, who played Beckett on SGA narrates. It's fun! It's #10 in the Big Finish Productions Stargate Audio Series. If you can find it, you'll likely enjoy it.

A great story with a solution that really came out of left field Brilliant writing! By far the best one of these so far! (listening to them in order).

An interesting adventure, somewhat of a standard - rescuing a captive population from disaster, unveiling the truth behind an illness, all good Beckett material!

This was pretty good - not great - until the ending, which was rather abrupt.

“Illness I can handle — the bloody volcanoes, that’s what I’m worried about!”

The Kindness of Strangers is an hour-long (audiobook) “episode” of the show, set sometime during season 2 or 3 of Stargate: Atlantis (before Sunday). It features the voice of Paul McGillion as Carson Beckett with Neil Roberts as Archus.

The Summary: Doctor Beckett and the Atlantis help with the evacuation of a planet that endangered by the imminent explosion of a supervolcano. During the he evacuation, Carson finds out about a colony that filled with people who were harbouring a terrible disease are about to be left behind by their own people and decides to help them. Racing against time, can Carson really find a cure or the volcano and the disease will be his end?

The Stroyline: This 'episode' brings memories! I always enjoyed the episodes about the illnesses and the ones centered around our beloved characters arrogance. Like....

“Hammond: Colonel, the United States is not in the business of interfering in other people's affairs!
Jack: Since when?”

Even though the show keeps saying United States/Stargate Command is not in the business of interfering in other people's affairs, this has been proven wrong numerous times ^_^ Episodes like The Other Side shows us how sometimes our beloved characters good intentions doesnt matter because we simply 'dont get the whole situation' or 'dont have all the facts' due to being arrogant and narrow-minded with our aproaches to alien life forms and people that live in other planets. Like they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Carson had good intentions in this 'episode' but like always, he was actually interfering and didnt understand the leader od the planet's position. As a leader, sometimes you need to make sacrifices. Thank God, towards the end with some character development, Carson 'gets it' but I wish in the end, Carson wasnt able to save the day because that would have made a better story. Both of the characters, Carson and Kraan understanding they were wrong but still not being able to change the outcome would have made a greater story because this is just another example of 'Stargate Command saves the day because...they just do' episodes. Coming with a cure at the last moment makes a typical Stargate story. Hence the reason why I gave a 3,5 stars to this 'episode'.

How people dealt with the sickness kinda reminded me another episode; Broca Divide. I liked the parallels they had with each other.

The Characters: Great character development! I liked the new character Kraan and his scenes with Carson. Specially this one;

Carson: “As my mom always says. Nothing worth doing ever comes easily. Dont ever give up on her again.”
Kraan: “The thing is even if she did forgive me how could I ever forgive myself
Carson: “That my friend, is always the hardest part.”

and the one where Carson understand Kraan's side of things and his moral choices. At that time, Kraan as a leader made a difficult decision but he was just trying to save his people and didnt have another choice. Like he said, to chance of a survival sometimes you need to learn makes sacrifices.

The things that bothered me: Where it didnt go, how it ended and the lack of some characters.

Where is Teyla and Ronan? Seriously, where? They never get mentioned in these audiobooks. NEVER. They are in the team, come on!

The Rresolution: Deus ex machina

Production Value: Awesome!!!

Recommended? Yes.

This was about the same as watching an episode of SGA. It was even the same length. I liked it well enough, but when it comes down to it, I'd much rather see the characters and the action than just listen to it.

In the middle of evacuating an entire planet due to imminent volcanic eruptions that will destroy it, Carson needs to find a cure for a deadly disease. Good story, my favourite among the SGA audiobooks I've listened to so far.
