Christy Lijewski is an American comic book artist and illustrator from Baltimore, Maryland who specializes in OEL manga. She operates on the internet under the pen name and-babel-fell. Christy Lijewski attended Savannah College of Art and Design for their Sequential Art program. Her big break was Tokyopop's Rising Stars of Manga contest, in which her entry "Doors" placed runner up. Although this meant that the Lijewski did not win the guaranteed contract with Tokyopop, it did bring her work into the public. Doors was also the genesis of Lijewski's series Next Exit, which Slave Labor Graphics began to publish in 2004. Next Exit is an expanded version of the story in "Doors", the two even sharing the main characters Retrab and Markesh. She was then one of a few runner up artists to enter a deal publishing with Tokyopop, and has written RE:Play as an entirely new series for release. (Wikipedia)
Absolutely bonkers ending that def felt like Tokyopop just told the author to wrap things up asap. Actual story ending was super rushed and a bit wonky but fine I guess. Niji and Laurent’s chapter ending on a joke after finding out that crazy backstory was… whew.
We have to talk about the Char and Rail chapter tho. My most charitable read is that Rail calling Char a boy cracked her egg. The least charitable read is… whew and Char is treated with enough love and dignity that id really prefer to think that’s not the case even tho that seems really directly implied lol. She’s still my GIRL tho I will ride and die for her forever.
The Char -> Rail -> Cree situation not only not resolving but ending with Char confessing her love and just getting an “I know” and that’s the LAST PAGE made me want to eat my hands lmaoooo I think she can do way better but damn I wanted her to get her man anyway idec
Also several uses of words for mental illness that def don’t fly today but again… this was like the mid-00s and you can tell lol. The fashion was still great and the art got more minimalist but I think it overall continued to improve.
Overall I wouldn’t recommend this series but it still holds a soft spot in my heart mostly thanks to Char and the obvious love for mid 00s Japanese street fashion. Also I think it has good bones and I would love to know what the author is up to these days bc I genuinely bet it’s gonna be good whatever it is!! If you’re out there Christy thank you for Char I hope you still love her a lot and I hope you’re doing well!!!!

Izsak's encounter with a woman who seems to know him makes Cree jealous, but in the end the incident brings the two of them closer. Unfortunately, Rail is at his breaking point where Izsak is concerned - he's still nursing a secret crush on Cree and can't stand to see her and Izsak together. They fight, and before they're able to talk it out and make up, Cree is kidnapped by Niji and Laurent, the people who've been stalking Izsak.
I didn't think Lijewski would manage it, but she actually did answer most of my questions from the previous volume. However, there wasn't enough space in this one volume to make all of the answers believable. I can't even imagine how badly Niji and Laurent's first few years must have gone, but now I'm supposed to believe that they're a happy couple and Niji just shrugs off Laurent's occasional murderous impulses? Riiight.
The name Lijewski chose for Niji and Laurent's secret organization implied things that I don't think she intended, and I really wish she'd just gone with "Section 12" and left it at that. And unfortunately there was almost no time to discuss any of the details about Izsak's identity. Based on
Aspects of the ending were problematic as heck. First there was that little "test" Izsak had to undergo. Why should it matter if he were curious about his old life, considering that Niji and Laurent had no plans to leave it at that and go on their way? Then there was And the stuff with Char and Rail just made me wince. So Char
It seems like a lot of short OEL manga series have pacing problems at the beginning and waste a lot of time before trying to cram everything into the end, and this series was no exception. It wrapped things up, sure, but not in a very emotionally satisfying way.
Extras:
- A couple pages of clothing sketches and notes - The top 9 entries from a fanart content, in black-and-white - A page of cosplay photos - A new character ranking - A note from the author and, I think, her editor
Rating Note:
More 1.5 stars, but I opted to round up. I'm annoyed at how much stuff was glossed over. This series really could have ended better.
Meh... Kudos to the author who could close all the arcs left open but I really didn't care about the characters anymore. And I wasn't dying to know what Izsak was supposed to be.
I'm sorry, but I also couldn't get used to Christy Lijewski's art.
I absolutely hated the art in this book BUT I loved the other two books so much, I stuck it out until the end. I love the whole series, they keep you guessing. A+ for Story, B- for art.
