Christmas found Beatrice in love with a marquess. She is a remarkable lady and his lordship seems to be the love of her life. But the holy days of Christmas awakened deeply bound feelings for Jonathon, a simple friend from the past... Lady Beatrice Whiston has despised Jonathon Foster from the first time he played a prank on her during their first Christmastide. She hasn’t seen Jonathon in the last four years, and in that time, she has made her come-out and developed a secret crush on the handsome Marquess of Trimbleford. Beatrice is set on winning over the marquess’s affections while he joins her family for Christmastide at Whistendale Estate. But the last thing Beatrice expected was her newfound attraction to Jonathon. Jonathon Foster is the son of a baker and comes from a humble upbringing. He is reunited with Lady Beatrice during her family’s visit to Whistendale village. But Beatrice is no longer the spoiled and annoying young girl he used to play pranks on. Instead, Jonathon finds his attraction growing for Beatrice the more time they spend together.

Regency romances are my favorite subgenre of romance, and Christmas or holiday stories are my ultimate favorite, so when this book was offered for free in a newsletter in December 2022, I had to purchase it. After getting just a few chapters in, I checked my Amazon order page to see if I actually paid money for it, as I was going to return it if I had. Luckily, it was free. I found it poorly written on several levels. First, the author's use of language is awkward, strange, and sometimes bizarre. I stopped reading the book a few pages after the author said something along the lines that the heroine coughed out of her nose! As a human being and a nurse, I don't think that's physically possible! But even before that, I was not liking the book at all. The hero is a disgusting pig. Authors of romances should know that the reader wants to fall in love with the hero along with the heroine. That just wasn't possible with this guy. While I didn't get that far, it's hard to imagine a young noblewoman, the daughter of an earl, preferring a baker's son—even if he was awesome and amazing—to a marquess. She would have a severe come-down in station, living a life of relative penury and servitude if she chose the buffoon. Not a good match by Regency standards. I also didn't like how others treated the heroine poorly, and no one seemed to care (including her). She was also what I would classify as a milquetoast heroine, even letting her meal be disturbed by the doofus hero staring at her. Yawn. Ultimately, this book was so poorly done that I didn't care either and abandoned the book a little after that nose cough!
The repeated story of how Franklin Foster was saved from drowning by the Earl of Whistendale was a little too much for me. The story tells the story of two family who have a connection over many years because of the near drowning of Mr. Foster. The Earl and Countess of Whistendale and their daughter, Lady Beatrice had usually spent Christmas at Whistendale Manor, but have been absent for the past four years. Franklin Foster, now the owner of a local bakery, and his two children, Jonathon and Juliet have always invited to the Earl's home for Christmas. Jonathon has always played pranks on Beatrice and she has not enjoyed spending time with him. When the earl and his family arrive back this year at Christmas, he invites the Foster family to his home. What will happen between the famiies after a four year absence? Will the way Jonathon and Beatrice interact with each be different now that they are older? This is a clean regency romance.
Jonathon and Beatrice This author is fairly new to me but I have enjoyed reading her books so far. In this one a reunion of two families after a number of years is showcased. Jonathon and Beatrice are the main characters and yes they have history and not all of it was good. I think it was a rather sweet romance yes it had its ups and downs. I did like the characters and poor Beatrice has so many self doubt and worries and toward the end of the book I felt rather sorry for her. The ending was fun and it put a smile on my face. Why is it that little boys like to pull pranks on those they like? I had three boys and they could be little demons at times with pulling pranks on each other and on the little girls that they liked. A fun book to read I recommend it.
Firstly it is an absolutely clean story for those who like to be assured on that.
I thought the storyline concept had merit, but sadly for me there was too much of the main characters thoughts and introspection Yes, we do need to understand their feelings, but I felt there was too much dwelling on this.
Beatrice knew who had teased her mercilessly as she grew up, and she knew who she thought was the handsome man that would become her betrothed. Christmas is a magical time and holds many memories for all. Would Jonathon thoughts and wishes align with Beatrice's or not? Add in Beatrice's grandmother's cunning ways and a delightful story is born.
This is another wonderfully presented story in this brilliant series. The insecurities and emotional turmoil along with the amazingly crafted characters, make this a very enjoyable read.
Martha Barwood delivers another sweet story. Easy to follow plot. Quick read. Lovable characters. If you want to get lost in a delightful Christmas tale, give this one a try.
