About the author

John Bolland is a Scottish writer and artist whose work explores themes of industry, climate justice, and intergenerational responsibility. Born in Paisley in 1958, he pursued a formal education in science and engineering, earning degrees in Chemistry from Strathclyde University before embarking on a career in the international oil and gas industry. Over several decades, he worked in management and consultancy roles across North America, Southeast Asia, West Africa, and Australia, as well as the European Continental Shelf.
In 2005, he completed an M.Litt in Creative Writing at Glasgow University, deepening his lifelong commitment to literature. Increasingly disillusioned with corporate environmental policies and the accelerating climate crisis, he left the energy sector in 2013 to focus entirely on writing and art. His poetry and prose, written in both Scots and English, have been widely published in magazines and anthologies, earning recognition in competitions such as the V.S. Pritchett and Fish Prizes.
His first poetry collection, Fallen Stock (2019), was followed by Pibroch (2022), both published by Red Squirrel. The latter evolved into a spoken word performance featuring original visual material and live music by virtuoso piper and saxophonist Fraser Fifield. Supported by Creative Scotland and the National Lottery, Pibroch toured across Scotland, appearing in diverse venues from small community halls to large theatres.
Bolland's work is deeply informed by his industrial background, historical and scientific inquiry, and personal engagement in environmental activism. His writing blends direct experience with broader ethical and ecological concerns, creating a body of work that resonates with contemporary issues. He currently serves on the board of the Scottish Writers Centre.
