Admittedly, out of all the volumes so far, this is my least favourite. To be honest, I kind of forgot all about this round, but maybe that's a sign of how...well, kind of unimportant it is, in the grand scale of things.

Contrary to what readers might be expecting, this is not the long-awaited round 4, but rather a qualifier for round 4. Sure, we get Yokoya as the main villain for this, but seeing as both his and Akiyama's tactics here are pretty simple in comparison to what they've shown themselves capable of in round 3, it just feels pretty simplistic overall as a result.

Ahem, but anyway, the rules of the game aside, the stakes for this qualifier round are technically pretty high: either win enough to be "safe" and actually compete in round 4, or lose and be thrown out of the Liar Game. What's interesting, of course, is that there's no money attached this time around, so at least debts can't be increased, but it's to be assumed that all the players presently there already have debts that they're stuck with from the LGT.

It's in this book that we get introduced to the lady--forget her name--who's assigned to watch Yokoya, much like the lawyer/not-lawyer guy who's assigned to watch Nao. She both supports and fears Yokoya in a way, and is shown to have a keen psychological mind in seeing the players' moves and motives when they do things--particularly int he cases of Yokoya and Akiyama.

The idea around the whole game is trust, which is seemingly contradictory when you consider that the overall tournament is called the 'Liar Game'. You would think that Nao would have this down pat; but unfortunately, Yokoya casts doubt not only over her method, but in the psyche of the entire group, early on. In that way, it kind of feels more like a face-off between Yokoya and Nao than it does Yokoya and Akiyama, and Yokoya himself even admits that he wants to have just Nao lose, as that would make Akiyama suffer the most.

But anyway, all this aside and the philosophy of trust aside, I think my main beef with it is that it felt like it dragged just a bit too much, as chapter after chapter I was waiting for it to be over, but then either Akiyama or Yokoya would throw out another gambit into the works. That being said, and as Yokoya mentions himself, it's really a waste of his and Akiyama's talents for just a qualifier round, and that's why both their tactics feel less than up to par as well.

Take it all in all, it's definitely not the strongest volume of the series, but does set the stage for what's the most dramatic round for far, if I remember correctly: round 5!

I was really hoping this would be my 5 star Liar Game volume bc this is essentially the Zombie Game from The Genius, AKA one of my favorite strategy games. So far, it's not a top tier Akiyama strategy, but it's aight. Therefore, this continues to get 4/5. Obvs I still really enjoyed this, hoping it gets even better in the second half of the round.

Overall Rating: 8/10 ... if... it didnt have 19 volumes. So honest rating- 5/10.

This was original, years ago. I have no idea how I had stumbled on Liar Game but it was phenomenal, original, intriguing with so much treachery and deceit, I just couldnt get enough. Liar Game plays on human emotion from the pages until the end. A game were deception and manipulation as well as conning strategy will keep you going in the game, avoiding exceedingly vast debt and psychological trauma, one can safely say that there are no winners at the end of the line of this secretive con tournament.

The psychological evolution of the main female character Nao changes as the series progresses but unfortunately her good nature of saving even those that wronged her would get on my nerves further on. Akiyama was a well rounded character to begin with and helped Nao during the tournament.

The ending felt rushed, with made no sense as this was a 19 volumes series. Honestly, I feel like 5 maybe 6 volumes would have been enough as the battles would become more intricate, convoluted and repetitive. Since the author had written for such a long time, I would have honestly expected a better ending instead of the mess it was with holes and details left unexplained.

So do I recommend it:

I guess, but down the line if I really think about it, no... Unless you like psychological scheming dramas that last a bit too long. Kinda like soap operas!

Akiyama pulls out his least smart strategy so far. Yokoya is annoying. Kanzaki should be doing better.

We're in an unexpectedly preliminary round for the fourth round of the Liar Game. Nao and Akiyama play against familiar face Yokoya without the help of Fukunaga's help. One of the best volumes.

This is the first volume in a while that I’ve been truly in love with this series. It brought back the tone and feelings that I enjoyed about the first two volumes. A lot of the recent rounds have suffered from being overcomplicated and it kind of felt like the author was trying too hard to have these mind-blowing revelations. The Pandemic game was a clear step in the right direction. It honestly sounded like it would be so damn fun to play. I liked how it was a strategic game, but it never got so convoluted that I had no clue what was going on. Sometimes I think simpler is better when it comes to this manga.

I know I’ve talked a lot of crap about Nao, but I have to give her props for the way she acted in this volume. While she’s still no mastermind, this was the one time where I thought she was an active participant in the Liar Games. Even if Akiyama was able to spot flaws in her plans, I was so happy that she wasn’t being the useless bystander she’s been for the entire series. She was actually pretty competent and I hope that’s the route her character continues to go down.

[REVIEW FOR THE SERIES...]

Liar Game (Vol. 1-19)

Liar Game (Japanese: ライアーゲーム Hepburn: Raiā Gēmu) is a Japanese seinen manga series originally written and illustrated by Shinobu Kaitani. At first I felt unsure whether this manga could even be exciting. It seemed just so-so...but man was I wrong. It is a psychological suspense manga, filled to the brim with intelligent plot, quirky characters and over all fascinating story.

"A scrupulously honest college student named Nao Kanzaki receives a package containing 100 million yen (about 1 million USD) and a note that she is now a contestant in the Liar Game Tournament. In this fictional tournament, contestants are encouraged to cheat and lie to obtain other contestants' money, with the losers forced to bear a debt proportional to their losses. When Nao's first opponent, a trusted former teacher, steals her money, she seeks assistance from a con man named Shinichi Akiyama. Though they manage to defeat him, Nao and Akiyama decide to buy out his debt and advance through different rounds of the Liar Game Tournament against merciless contestants, while at the same time attempting to free their opponents from debt and defeat the Liar Game organization from within." -Book Blurb

Nao Kanzaki is unwilling dragged into the Liar Game, and to survive she hires intelligent con-man Shinichi Akiyama. They team up to destroy this mysterious and dangerous organization behind the Liar Game, from the inside out.

Unique and stylistic, intelligent and suspenseful, Liar Game is a very enjoyable series. I never thought I could love a series like this, nor did I know one existed. This is a battle of wits and chance, a story of truth and lies. It is not an action adventure, nor is it a romance, or comedy. It is a very interesting genre or blend of genres, falling somewhen under psychological suspense and intrigue. I highly recommend giving this one a shot, even it it seems its not your type of manga. I sincerely thought it wouldn’t be mine, but here we are. Take a chance!
