Kaiji is one of the strangest and darkest things I've ever read. Frankly, it is messed up. That being said, I think it's brilliant.

Originally written in 1996, the plot holds up and possibly works even better against today's economic situation. Kaiji, a 20-something-year-old, can't find a job and finds himself unwittingly in debt. He's offered a chance to gamble his way out of debt, though the catch is there's a whole lot more at stake than money.

Fukumoto's artwork is very stylized, but once you get used to it it's actually quite fun and adds humor to an otherwise very grisly story.

Excellent series of psychological battles, terrifying addiction to gambling, and crazy schemes. Its practically psychological horror, and the character's despair feels very real which makes his ingenious triumphs even more satisfying.

Hasn't been fully scanlated yet, it seems to end at chapter 23 everywhere, probably due to the anime. Part 2 of the manga has been translated, 3 and 4 are incomplete.
