Young George Alwood the Third heads west to the Rocky Mountains, following an argument with his wealthy father. He has no idea what fate has in store for him. Teaming up with two experienced mountain men, Jeb and Hawk, he soon finds himself with an unwanted Indian wife, Falling Leaf. When the group spends the winter, high in the mountains, he learns to love her, and then discovers she is pregnant with their child. Returning to Fort Atkinson in the summer, George sells a small bag of gold to a sutler, which brings out deep greed in more than one man who witnesses the exchange. Soon after, with a brutality rarely seen out west, his wife and unborn child are killed, and this sets him on a bloody trail for revenge. The killers have not murdered just any woman, and he will not stop until he achieves payback for his lost family.

This is the first novel that I have read by this author and I found it to be very good reading. It was entertaining enough that I will read more by this author.

Looking for an adventure that will take you out of the regular norm of a western genre book? War Paint is up in your face, every nook and turn will lead you on to more intense and sometimes brutal situations. War Paint by author W. R. Benton is historically correct with a glossary for terms in the back.

What I liked best was besides being a great book, the author while he weaves his tale has an educational teaching lesson that most books doing bother to educate you about. A must have and book is slated to become a movie. Mississippi author written.

Really good example of Americana. Not a simple western but the story of the making of a mountain man. Recommended.
