Perhaps the reason the Muppets have never done a serious adaptation of Peter Pan is because the cast just isn't there. With few exceptions, there simply aren't Muppets that match the personalities of the core Pan characters. And that's where this book suffers the most: it shamelessly (and horribly) shoehorns Muppets into roles they just don't belong. Janice and Sam the Eagle are gross parodies of their true selves, while Kermit is completely, entirely, and irrevocably out of character. Piggy and Gonzo as Tinker Bell and Captain Hook ring true (and are both beautifully drawn), but they are not enough to carry the bulk of the story.
In short, this is a travesty. It has--by far--the best illustrations of any of the BOOM! Muppet comic books to date, but the writing is a disaster.
This is the best of the Muppet Graphic Novel series so far in my opinion. The Muppet humor seems to be there and the artist did a wonderful job of capturing the essence of the characters. Although the storyline is stretched from the actual Peter Pan story, it keeps with the craziness that is the muppets. A nice book to introduce young readers to the world of the Muppets.
Once again, I primarily checked this out from the library for Amy Mebberson's art. As usual, I loved Mebberson's style, but for the book itself, I have to agree with Peyton. I just couldn't get into the story and having just finished season one of The Muppet Show, it was clear how ill-suited Janice was for Wendy.
