Torchy

Rate this book
Torchy of the flaming-red hair is sixteen, an orphan, a New York City nomad moving from boarding house to boarding house and one menial job to the next. He is brash and cheerful, always ready to laugh at authority or start the wheels moving when someone needs help. Torchy is unschooled but intelligent, credulous but cynical, and he is audacious enough to succeed anywhere. In these short stories, originally published in Sunday newspaper supplements in 1909 and 1910, he works his charms in the outer office of a bucket shop and then learns the ins and outs of commercial real estate as head office boy at the Corrugated Trust.
