When Detective Inspector Joe Hogarth is called to a crime scene, he finds a grim and confusing murder. The victim was bound to a chair and stabbed to death. The method suggests a gangland execution. But why did the killer administer a blissful overdose before the fatal stabbing?
Clues are thin on the ground. But not for long…
Another body is soon discovered, bearing all the hallmarks of the first victim – down to every torturous detail.
Hogarth must race against the clock to crack the clues before another victim dies. And in the background, a man from Hogarth’s past is released from prison - with one thing on his mind.
Revenge.
Fighting crime on all sides, working through layers of sin, temptation and greed Hogarth must track the motive and the killer before more blood is spilled – and all the while he must watch his back… because a time of reckoning is coming.
Hello folks, My name is Solomon Carter, and I am the author of the Roberts and Bradley PI crime thriller series, The Last Line international thriller series, the DI Hogarth Darkest series and more. I write mysteries, crime and thriller novels and more besides.
I was born in Southend, Essex and lived there for most of my life apart from eventful student days in South London. But my life in Southend was even more eventful still. I ended up working in a string of jobs including as a jobcentre clerk, a book seller, tutor for youth with low skills and low self esteem, mortgage broker, and latterly manager of a food bank which dealt with all kinds of interesting people facing all kinds of eye-opening, jaw dropping problems. Because of these ear-to-the-ground jobs the majority of my novels are set in Southend. In 2016 I moved to North Cornwall because I liked the idea of never-ending holidays - but I also write almost every single day. My aim is to write action-packed thrillers and page-turning mysteries that readers love and my hope is to get better at what I do with every book across each and every year.
I like to give away lots of free books as part of what I do. What I am good at: telling stories What I am bad at: dancing, being patient. What I love: nature, the seaside, adventures Writers I heartily recommend: Lee Child, Ian Rankin, Henning Mankell, Val McDermid, Harlan Coben, Robert Crais. Writers I need to read more of: Val McDermid, Ian Rankin, Michael Connelly and others. Other things I do beside writing: at present I like to keep my running going to balance out the sitting behind a laptop (a habit inspired by Haruki Murakami's 'What I talk about when I talk about running' - a great book). -I am currently doing surf lessons. When in Rome, as they say... -Getting out into nature as the weather allows.
I look forward to hearing from you. Until then I'll keep on writing. Or running. Or surfing. Or chasing my children around the house.
All the very best, Solomon :)
PS if you have enjoyed any of my books, I'd be honoured if you could post a review. Those reviews really do help!
Purgle has gotten out of prison after sixteen years thanks to DI Hogarth. How is the time for revenge. DI Hogarth is involved in a strange murder investigation. And then another similar murder both where drug dealer plus other things. Purgle finds Hogarth but only has one opportunity which fails. Continued in book two. I would highly recommend this series and others by this author to 👍 readers of British 🏰 mystery novels 👍🔰. 2023 😀😯👒
A gripping story about drug dealers being murdered using Speedball (cocaine and heroin).
Hogarth and his team have nothing to go on in their search for the killer but as ever small clues are unearthed that really don’t help very much on their own. An accumulation of small almost meaningless clues give Hogarth something to work on and they get a decent boost to help them.
Hogarth resorts to going direct to drug dealers for help on the basis that they might be next so it’s in their interests to help him identify the killer.
The story keeps you gripped and wanting Hogarth to get both the killer and the female companionship he craves.
Watch out for the change in how the author describes the killer, it helps us readers identify the killer.
Solomon Carter's trilogies are unputdownable. I've followed the progress of Roberts and Bradley, PI s from their early days, and DI Hogarth since he appeared in Southend. There is a bit of crossover, since Roberts and Bradley and Hogarth & co live and work the same area. These books are addictive - the action starts from chapter one and doesn't let up. The adventures are usually written in trilogies - each one can be read as stand alone but that wouldn't be nearly as satisfying. Hogarth is a complex character who never gives up - but sometimes the criminal can be equally determined. Carter's Hogarth and PI novels are addictive. There are other series but I haven't read so many of them. Thoroughly entertaining. I love them
This was another good book by Solomon Carter, one of DI Hogarth series. I like how the author manages to continue with characters the same from book to book and yet has a totally different story to write. He continues to keep my attention in his grasp as weaves his mystery and keeps me guessing and ultimately not coming to know who is behind the main plot of the story until the very end. the main character "Hogarth" reminds me of the person of interest in the "Reacher" series by a different author, but he has the same honor and traits as Reacher. I recommend this author and series to all looking for a good mystery and that the perpetrator isn't know until the end.
I have just read this Thrilling storyline...once started you cannot put down the book. Solomon has again put Joe, Sue and Ecrin right in the thick of an awesome mystery. Who to trust? Who to believe? Bringing a ex .con from his Met days back just adds fuel to the fire. A truly great first book in the latest tryogy....can hardly wait for Book 2. Thank you Solomon.
This police procedural features an aging detective, Joe Hogarth, who is an old school type and who has problems finding a girlfriend. He is assisted by two female subordinates who have difficulty with Hogarth’s old school ways. A couple of interesting murders occur and a psychopath is let out of prison who has a score to settle with Hogarth. All this combines for a so-so story. Might make a decent TV series, though.
A good start to another crime thriller trilogy, where Hogarth and his team investigate a gruesome and puzzling murder.
I liked the fast-paced writing style and how the characters suited the plot. Hogarth is a complex and yet sad character but is always determined to crack the case and put villains behind bars. (Please change 'Me either' to 'Me neither', in that context).
There were threats from more than one side, the plots merging if not all solved in book one.
Joe Hogarth is deep in this story. Possible new romance, two murders leading g us on a merry chase. Poor Joe can't seem to get ahead, but still one step.ahead of Palmer and Kaplin. I was somewhat behind and didn't figure out who the killer was till near the end. Well Joe perhaps your luck out and find your love.
What's next? What's lurking around the corner? At the next light? In the next pub?can't wait to find out! This book 1 of the new Hogarth series is a success
Yet another awesome read from Solomon, definitely one of my favourite authors. Also DI Hogarth, great characters as usual in his series, always keeps you wanting to keep reading. Absolutely recommend this book.
The main standalone story is very interesting and has a decent ending but there is also an underlying second story that isn't concluded as there are two more books in the trilogy. You can enjoy this on its own though.
Palmer is back in the game following her brush with the local gangster! A particularly brutal murder is the subject of this book. With few leads the team are chasing their tale when a second murder scene is found. Meanwhile an old nemesis of Hogarth rears his ugly head.
This has to be the best Hogarth book to date. I couldn't put it down. It really had me hooked. Solomon Carter has really excelled himself with this book..
