Wekapipo's position is a surprisingly compelling one. I wasn't initially big on this character and I don't feel that he has smoothly transitioned into his current role. But now that we're here, I've grown to like the character. He is someone who has already tried his best to live righteously, but has been punished for it every step of the way. In Italy, he lost everything for trying to protect his sister. And now he's lost any chance he had of a life in America because he's trying to protect Lucy. He even had to kill his old partner. And in the end, he loses his life after saving Dio.

I'm not super clear on D4C's ability. I get the whole multiple universes deal. And I think the metaphor of the sponge is just to show that the same things will be in the same place, even if it's a different universe. But what I'm less clear on is who shot Johnny. I think it's supposed to be that all three men shot Johnny in different universes. But I'm not clear on what those universes "overlapping" actually means. Or what it means to the witnesses. Suppose the Dio that we've been watching from the start of the series is the one who show Johnny. Does this mean that the Wekapipo in this volume is a different Wekapipo from the one we saw earlier in the story? Surely, this would have to be a Wekapipo from a timeline where he was the one to shoot Johnny, right? And what about the witnesses. Did Valentine snatch up witnesses from 3 different universes and drop them all in the same park? Or maybe it's a Schrodinger's cat sort of situation? Each of the three men being the shooter is equally true, but no single one of them is definitely true. And maybe I just have to think less concretely about how this stand works. This is the Golden Wind of stand introductions. Compelling setup, confusing conclusion. But at least here, the way it wrapped up at least feels emotionally satisfying, even if it doesn't make a lot of sense.

Back to the positives, I think the alternate universe aspect of Valentine's stand is pretty great. His power is really terrifying. If he can drape a flag over you, you're brought to an alternate universe where you meet a duplicate of yourself, become paralyzed with confusion, and then you die a painful death. Getting caught in his power is this freaky whirlwind with a thunderous exclamation point.

Symbolically, his stand is a winner too. Valentine is this slippery little bastard. Just when it seems like you've caught him, he slinks out of sight. And he has a slew of identical clones to continue his work where he left off. So even if you take out Valentine, you've only cut off one of the hydra's heads. Peak presidential accountability right there. One bad president does not exist in isolation. They are part of a flawed system and another will come along to fulfill the same role. If you want to make a meaningful difference, you have to do more than overcome any one man.

Lucy's (seeming) stand is pretty interesting too. Her power is basically having God's favor. Everything goes catastrophically right for her. I'm eager to see how this manifests going forward. Maybe all of the damage targets people's left eye because that's the piece the corpse is still missing?

Lastly, Johnny's moment here was really moving. Maybe the first moment in Jojo to make me tear cry. It might have just hit me on the right day, but seeing him try to stand up and fall hit me hard. In any lesser story, this would have fallen flat as some sort of obligatory act 2 low point or something. But Johnny's sheer desperation and hopelessness resonated. He's come so far, done so much, sacrificed so much. He's been through a gauntlet and has killed to get to this point. That fire in his eyes represents cold determination to do whatever it takes to succeed. And as with most characters in this story, he's not motivated by altruism. Johnny sees the corpse as a second chance at life- a chance to be "born again". Valentine sees it as a tool to set the pace that the rest of the world will follow. Hot Pants sees it as a chance to absolve her guilt. Dio sees it as a chance to restore his dignity- to live a prideful life. While Gyro's motivation of saving the kid isn't tied to the corpse, he still pursues it as a way of forging a path in life he has chose for himself. All of these people see the corpse as a way to overcome their past and find inner peace- Araki talks about the idea of characters wanting to "go home" at the start of this volume. But only one of them can get what they want. And the rest are prepared to become martyrs.

Series: Steel Ball Run #18
Rating:4 stars - It was really good

In this volume we finally get to see the President's stand and what it can do. His stand, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (D4C) allows neighboring worlds to exist simultaneously in the same location and travels through them. The president is the only one who can travel through the worlds and can switch his body through them so any time he is injured he just abandons the injured body in a different world, making him hard to hurt. We have been building up the president this whole series so it's nice to see that his stand is actually really cool and hard to fight.

The president's fight against Dio and Wekapipo was fascinating. Dio gets pulled into another world and since he isn’t supposed to be in other worlds it starts to tear him apart. It was a very interesting battle but sadly ended in the death of Wekapipo. Sadly, the President does get the corpse eye from Dio and that means he has all of the corpse now.

Gyro eventually does find Johnny who was hiding in the sewers and they set about planning to take down the President and rescue Lucy. While Gyro is rescuing Johnny, Lucy is rescuing herself. She awakens to find herself in a hospital and her husband is in another room being untreated after being shot. Her captors attempt to drug her again but she resists and is able to escape and was even able to get her husband as well. While escaping she followed a voice in her head which led her to a boat, where she realized the voice was the President. So sadly, it appears her escape was short lived.

This series is really picking up and I am really interested in seeing how they stop the President and rescue Lucy.

TW: gun violence; injuries, gore, death; drugging;

This arc (D4C 1-6) needs such careful reading to piece things together. I got most of it but missed Funny Valentine's ability to effectively teleport with D4C which caused great confusion concerning the feasibility of the witnesses. I do not like reader-facing mysteries and am glad that this mystery solved itself rather quickly.

Wekapipo's death toward the end of the fight was brutal, significant, and tragic. He never truly got to choose his destiny and that bittersweetness is perfect. Lucy, another tragic character, continues to be a fantastic hero but I remember that she is removed from the story as a character once Love Train takes full effect and I don't know if she is restored for the action at the goal. I surely hope she gets at least one more heroic moment before (hopefully briefly) becoming an object of the plot.

Obviously it's good, it's JoJo and to be fair 3 feels a bit low. I like where things are going with Lucy and our full cast of boys and girls is coming together but this is feeling a bit too reminiscent of Stone Ocean for me .

I loved Diego Vs Valetine fight, I understand now the president's abilities, even though they are confusing. The visuals of D4C arc were great.
However the later chapters with Lucy were iffy. I don't like the route Lucy's arc has taken.
Gyro is back again at his weird family bullshit, but what's new.

President's ability follows the Jojo tradition of supervillains having insanely powerful stands.

Can't wait for the final showdown to see how Johnny's awakened spin fares against the dimensional-hopping President.

Si en el anterior me sosprendio D4C, aquí estoy más que alterado.

Me gustó la resolución de la situación, y también el esfuerzo que está haciendo Lucy por hacer las cosas bien.
