After reading and loving the author's book, A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23 I am continually searching for another novel of his that meets this expectation. So far, I haven't found one but will keep trying.

Strength of Soul is basically a copulation of the author's personal experiences that outline what works for him in strengthening his walk with God. Unfortunately, I didn't feel that there was a lot of substance to these stories and took nothing away to help in my own growth with God. Although I'm glad that he found things to "strengthen his soul", I think everyone's path to fulfillment in Christ is different and there's no set guidebook for that. I do appreciate the author's honesty and hope this book was helpful to others.

Quotes to ponder:

“We fret and fume and fuss about the unknown future. We drag tomorrow’s imagined difficulties into this day. So we desecrate each day with stress and strain.”

“Here in the urban environment, designed, engineered and contrived by human ingenuity, human beings are cut off from the healing benefits of fields, forests, streams and the gentle solace of open space, solitude and stillness.”

“Our hope is in God our Father. Our confidence is in the Living Christ. Our strength is in His Holy Spirit.”

“O Lord, keep me reasonably sweet; I do not want to be a sour old saint — Some of them are so hard to live with . . . Give me the ability to see good in unexpected places, And the lovely talents in unexpected people. And, give me, O Lord, the grace to tell them so! Amen.”

“The longer I live, the more keenly I am aware that basically all that counts in life is what we can contribute of comfort, cheer, and inspiration to others.”

“There are abounding other benefits which come to the person who learns to love the out-of-door. Excellent physical exercise to tone up the body; the stimulation of fresh air, sunshine and broader horizons for the mind. Each in their own way enrich the day and energize our lives.”

“Music in all of its diverse forms is one of the greatest gifts which God our Father has bestowed upon the planet and its people.”

“From the earliest days of creation He created harmony. Far and wide across the great expanses of the earth He brought magnificent melodies into play. The songs of the sea; the lilting melodies of running streams; the whispering notes of the wind in the trees; the glorious sounds of a thousand bird songs; the muted stirrings of breezes blowing over fields of grass and grain; the lovely lap of water on the lake edge; the sweet sounds of rain falling from the clouds; the gentle murmur of contented children at play; the deep chuckle of adults sweet in spirit; the glorious songs of lives spilling over with abundant joy.”

It was ok.

Some of it seemed to be a bit too much like reading blog articles. "Yesterday, I was talking with this guy..." And some of it was a bit too self helpy. He also seemed to have some axes to grind.

But there's also some good stuff in there. It might be helpful to some. It's by no means bad.

This for me, however, is going on the discard pile.

I have not the words to review this book adequately, but I shall try.
It is clear to see from the beloved pages of this book, that the writer is one who has spent years pursuing after the heart of God.
He pours from heart to paper, the lessons he has no doubt learnt on how to attain strength of soul in the merciful arms of our Lord.
The language is simplistic, the tone is friendly. It reads as if he were a dear friend, urging you to pursue after God for yourself.
I have only just finished reading it, but I shall read it again, and again, until I have mastered these dear principles.

A very refreshing book for Christians looking to draw closer to their Savior. It is made up of 21 chapters; each very short and to the point of what the author is trying to explain. I found out that reading a chapter at the end of the day relaxed me and drew me closer to God. I recommend that as you read you have an open Bible beside you and take your time, there is much to learn in each chapter. The purpose of this book is to get you into the Word of God, into prayer, and daily fellowship with the Lord.

Another good book by my favorite inspirational writer. This author is certainly worth your time to try.
And do not let the subtitle of the book ("The Sacred Use Of Time") mislead you. An editor must have added that. The book has much good advice about many areas of the Christian life, and reading it will be "time" well spent.
