Rate this book

Nina is a girl in middle school with a little brother and a single mom who barely has enough time to spend with her. Put down at school by nasty cliques, Nina’s life is not much fun. All this changes when a magical fairy named Sybil turns up in Nina’s backpack! Sybil and Nina have a blast giving Nina’s tormentors a taste of their own medicine. There’s only one problem: demons from the magical world that Sybil comes from have followed her to our dimension, and they’re out to cause some damage of their own!

The cover of this book is super cute and I thought I might like the story, but I wasn't into it. The art is okay. The story was too fast moving and with zero information. Why is there suddenly a fairy hanging around Nina? And the whole thing with Ramses was random, and I felt it wasn't necessary for story progression. I don't have any interest in reading the rest unfortunately to see if it gets better. And my interest in knowing why Sybil is suddenly there wasn't even remotely peaked enough to keep me interested in reading the rest of this series.

The artwork is good though. I will give it that.

I think I'm going to roll over and die when Papercutz actually serializes something I end up really enjoying.

This volume was all over the place. It started off trying to establish to rich fantasy setting and then pinballed to a typical school setting. I'm not even sure how the fantasy is supposed to tie into the plot to begin with. The characters are rushed in introduction and seemingly serve no purpose besides "hilarious" filler involving school escapades and bullies. They make a few mentions of Sybil's future purpose in the fantasy world, but they're weak at best, and uninteresting at worst. I have absolutely no incentive to pick up a second volume of this mess, and I don't know why anyone else apart from a child would, either.

Also, please kill pseudo-anime art styles in American graphic novels. They're so hard to get down and rarely look good.

Although I dearly, dearly loved the illustration style, the story itself was lacking. It was rushed, felt incomplete, promoted cheating in school, and just plain held no interest for me. It's a shame, as I really wanted to like it.

I enjoyed the premise of this book (how cool to have a fairy that lives in your backpack) and the humor of many of the situations, as well as the idea of hidden realms within our world that we can never see. I did find some aspects of the story rather predictable and flat, but it was OK.

Read by my 7-year-old daughter who loved it! She rated it 5 stars and would like to read the rest of the series.

Nina is having trouble in school and when she finds a weird duo in her backpack it doesn't help matters. Getting to know and trust her new fairy friend Sybil proves difficult but interesting. There's so much Nina doesn't know but Sybil doesn't reveal all.

I mostly like the art style, but the writing has lots of exclamation points! Everyone is excited! About everything! And that didn't sit well for me.
This has similar pacing to TV shows like the Winx Club; one thing after another resolved very quickly, then there's something else right away.

This first volume sets up a large number of plot threads for later stories, but the basic premise is cute and clever. Nina has been assigned a fairy to help her through life. The fairy has an assistant, sort of a tiny troll with a huge appetite. While both the fairy and the troll mean well, their actions often complicate Nina's life as much as they help her.
Nina's life isn't all that simple to begin with. She lives with her mother and baby brother, after her parents have separated. Her mother is trying to have a social life, but Nina doesn't exactly approve of the guy she's seeing. In addition, she's still a tomboy at the point where the popular girls in school are "maturing," or at least dressing in girly clothes and wearing makeup.
Sybil, the fairy, can only be seen by Nina or by animals. When she tries to help Nina with her homework on ancient Egypt, things get a bit out of hand. Then, there's the mysterious "enemy" fairy who seems to have an agenda of her own.
Don't forget to read the bonus section at the end, highlighting some of the side effects of having a fairy around the house. It's got some very funny extra bits, involving egg races and a flying baby brother.

3.5 stars. Loved the art. The story was original and pretty engaging. Didn't like the fairy's skanky-licious attire, but I suppose it's a teaching opportunity for my 6-year-old girl. "Can you point out the shameless hussy on this page?" :)
I'll read the sequel if I can find it at the library.

Just not that engaging. The opening was not informative enough, and the rest of the book followed suit. I don't need to read another one to decide, and that is a bad sign with graphic novels.
