It was just a smooth round metal ball, less than a metre in diameter. Although it was still hot from its journey through the huge nothingness of space, it looked quite harmless. But what was it, exactly? A meteor, perhaps - just one of those pieces of rock from outer space that occasionally fall down on to the planet Earth. But meteors don't usually make strange hissing sounds . . . In this collection of four of his famous science-fiction stories, John Wyndham creates visions of the future that make us think carefully about the way we live now.

Meteor Dumb Martian Survival Body and Soul (which was originally published as Pillar to Post in the collection The Seeds of Time)
Wow! I absolutely love this short story collection. I thought the ideas and concepts behind the stories were really interesting. I did not expect feministic views in a works of SF from the 60/70s SF-period. I just wish they were longer - maybe even made into a proper novel-so that the stories had more space for character development.
DQ: In chapter2, alien revenged cold man. If you could revenge people who did unkind things to you, would you revenge?
A: I would not revenge. I think if I revenge, I will be revenged again. I want to live long and safe.
I thought chapter2 is a chapter1's after story. However, there are no relationships between chapter1 and 2. The alien in chapter2 is not tiny, but was really fool. However, she learned and revenged. For me, Chapter2 is more interesting than chapter1.
I personally love short science fiction stories. There are some fun set ups in this collection, but they don't all have well-crafted endings. I love a surprise twist! Still, a quick fun read.
A SF story, one of the best I know. On some planet that is dying it has been decided to send out eight sophisticated spaceships in order to give part of the population a chance to survive and to assure the continuation of the race.
The various targets of the spaceships had been selected with care. One of the ships lands on Earth. But the hopes of the beings abord the ship are deceived. The blue planet proves to be a catastrophy for them.
A thrilling story and the technique of narration is on a high level.
