What's worse, Lot offering up his virgin daughters up to be violated to save his visiting angels or said daughters getting daddy drunk and violating him to get pregnant?

This is a very fun read. Great scripture citation for those looking for something sassy to say to self-appointed moral gatekeepers.

The book is not well-written, and it reflects a big chip-on-the-shoulder of the author (not without reason, though).
But as a quick reference for writing papers or sermons, this book is quite helpful. Passages are neatly arranged by depravity, making it a simple matter to pull what you need.
For serious scholarship and exegesis, however, use these verses as a starting point to go read the verses in context.

Doesn't have to do much narration or personal bias of the author to prove the point the author was getting at. He simply uses the scriptures themselves while at the same time, pointing out obvious and historical facts that Christians have been sheltered from (or simply ignored) for centuries.... Like King James was gay for example. Great read.

Of course I had read all of these texts, but it's so much fun to see them all in the same place like that. You'd be surprised how completely naughty the bible can be at times.

The title of this book is slightly misleading. It's a good lascivious title geared toward getting more readers due to prurient interests. And sure enough, readers will find enough sex talk to satisfy those prurient interests. However, this book is more of an attack on Judaism and Christianity for being scumbags. Akerley uses scripture to prove that both religions are awful and vile. One of my favorite parts was when he describes the penalty for rape: if the victim was spoken for, the rapist gets put to death. If she's not with anyone, the rapist has to marry her. WHAT?! Really? How is that right? Scripture also dictates that if the victim cries out for help and no one hears her, she's not to blame as much, but if someone did hear and didn't help, then the victim is completely to blame for this rape. Oh yeah, and if a woman touches a man's genitals (even if only to get him off), her hand gets cut off. I would say this is damning evidence to completely dismiss the Bible as an important work. I'm an atheist, so Akerley is preaching to the choir (so to speak), but he has done some pretty good work in reinforcing my disgust with organized religion. I wish he'd do the same thing for Muslims, just to get the trifecta.

A very entertaining book, and an excellent addition to any bookshelf. Akerley's work is well-researched as well as entertaining. A terrific conversation starter.

This book is hilarious and downright frightening. I love the candor and wit. I will definitely be referring back to this one repeatedly.

Goofy collection of the bible's naughty bits. Easy read. Unless someone is looking for a quick reference to who did what to whom and how, this is not a must have book

Roger Bailey As a straight man I can't say that I have a whole lot of interest in these books, but I have had many gay and lesbian friends and I applaud any efforts to gain greater acceptance for sexual minorities and to celebrate their sexuality.

Roger Bailey As a straight man I can't say that I have a whole lot of interest in these books, but I have had many gay and lesbian friends and I applaud any efforts to gain greater acceptance for sexual minorities and to celebrate their sexuality.

A COLLECTION OF BIBLICAL TEXTS ABOUT SEX, WITH COMMENTARY
Ben Edward Ackerley is (was?) a member of The American Natural Hygiene Society, and a friend of James Hervey Johnson (editor of 'The Truth Seeker'). He said in the Dedication of this 1984 book, "This anthology is dedicated in general to the countless number of persons whose efforts have served as an antidote and a counterforce to the all-too-numerous militant pro-censorship groups trying desperately to curtail our priceless heritage of freedom of expression in the first republic in history founded on the bedrock principle of the absolute separation of state and church." (Pg. i)
He explains, "My interest in writing a book about Biblical sexual practices dates back to my college freshman year as a theology major when I studied the Bible formally, my approach then being both reverent and uncritical. I was astounded to discover the great amount of sex in the Good Book, for until that time, I had viewed it as the literal word of God." (Pg. vi)
Of the story in John 8:1-11 of the woman caught in adultery, he states, "Instead of denouncing this unjust and inhumane law [Lev 20:10], Christ merely challenged the hypocrisy of her accusers ... Thus the cruel and barbaric prohibition against adultery was given Christ's implicit approval and his hesitation to speak out against the law serves as a stinging indictment of his own moral code. Can death ever be considered just punishment for a mere sexual infraction?" (Pg. 112)
After quoting 1 Sam 18:20-25, he comments, "David was so intent on pleasing his future father-in-law that he and his men slew 200 Philistines and brought their foreskins to the king in exchange for Michal's hand... Thanks to Sigmund Freud and Women's Lib, nearly everyone is conversant with the concept of penis envy. I have coined the term 'foreskin envy' here to describe the obsessive emphasis given in the Holy Writ on the rite of circumcision, especially when it reaches the extreme of being performed on the dead." (Pg. 234)
After quoting Judges 15:1-6, he states, "After this and other exploits, Samson patronized a whore and shacked up with her for almost two days straight!" (Pg. 341-342)
He ends with the observation, "As a fitting close, it is most appropriate to quote two Bible texts [Ecc 4:11 and 9:9-10] which reflect a sane, healthy and refreshingly hedonistic view on the subject of humankind's brief span on this earth and how our unmitigated enjoyment of sex might help to enhance our appreciation of this, the only life we can be truly assured of." (Pg. 387)
This volume will be loved by skeptics and various freethinkers.
