"Han Ting says love is not all I have in my life. I cannot give you the love in which I can die for you passionately, but I can give in the love which I can accompany you in your everyday life. Ji Xing knows the love they seek is different and the dream they want is also different. But when she climbs to the top of the mountain to be with him, she faces the trouble, problem and pain together with him, also witnessing the beauty of the city. They appreciate each other. And their love for each other is like the night scene of the capital he takes her to see for the first time-quiet and magnificent beauty that is intoxicating."
It's not a good sign for a romance story when I like the MC with her ex more than the ML lol
When the story starts out, Ji Xing, our MC, has been dating a guy called Shao Yichen for 7 years since college. They're happy together, but when the MC quits her job and tries to strike out with her own medical device 3D printing company, she finds herself neglecting her personal life and the two break up. Slowly she finds herself drawn to her investor and bigshot in the medical devices industry, Han Ting, who has been advising her throughout her startup journey.
What I liked about this story was that it was quite realistic. The first couple chapters describes the MC's day to day life working as an employee and it's quite depressing. I can understand why she would want to do something on her own instead of continuing to work for someone else for the rest of her life. Some of the ML's advice around starting a new business and areas to focus on is quite relevant as well, and you can tell the author did her research into the topic.
The breakdown of JX's relationship with SYC is also written very well. They start out as a perfect idealistic couple, but when JX finds herself in over her head with all the challenges of running a startup, she ignores SYC in order to put out fires and the relationship suffers greatly as a result. As readers, we could see it slowly deteriorate.
However, it was very odd for me to find out that SYC found himself a new girlfriend after 3 months of the breakup. He and the MC clearly still love each other, plus they have 7 years of history between them, so I don't agree with how quickly he was able to move on. I actually really liked their dynamics together. SYC was the perfect supporting boyfriend and was so understanding of the MC's needs. Heck, he even used all of his savings as investment for her startup. If that's not true love I don't know what is. Reading about their break up was rough for me, rougher than it was reading about the relationship struggles between the MC and ML later on...
In contrast, JX's relationship with Han Ting is quite rocky and I honestly wasn't a huge fan of their relationship. I thought it worked well in a advisor/mentee setting but I don't understand why HT saw in JX other than being physically attracted to her. And when she asks him, all he says is that she makes him happy. Not the most convincing reason dude.
I think a lot of their problems can be boiled down to communication (or lack thereof). HT doesn't tell JX his plans even when they involve her, and when JX subsequently finds out about said plans, she acts out in a fit of pique without consulting him. There's a huge lack of trust and communication all around which had me quite frustrated when reading. The MC is also very insecure about their relationship and always thinks the worst when she catches HT with Zeng Di. Girl, have some faith in the man you chose to date!! He never dated ZD for a reason.
Anyways, I have very mixed feelings about this book. I hear there's a drama adaptation in the works too. I'll probably give it a try but have a feeling I may end up dropping it if I get too frustrated.
The translation was done very well. I couldn't tell at all that it was edited MTL as it read very smoothly.
First of all, I love the cover, it's what drew me into this book, I don't understand a word in Chinese so I read the translated English version, which is no different from the original.
I want to say thank you to the translators who took the time to work on this novel and the author too. This is one of my favourite Chinese novels and will remain to be for a long time.
I love the well-thought-out characters, in the last chapter I was crying so much, and I still feel like crying😭 What I loved most about this book is its realisticness which can be rare in most Chinese novels and how well-written it was.
This is especially in vl 1-2 when he was mentoring her, and, you could see this is a skilled man and an elite in business, in short, a successful CEO.
Some of the pieces of advice he gave especially on management and startups I felt like I should also take notes 😁/ learn from him. This shows that the author took time to research businesses, companies, AI e.t.c which is great. Sometimes I hate how people write books based on a career only to gloss over the whole career with a mere 5 sentences, how are we supposed to believe the mc was good at it when the author can't prove it🧐
I also appreciated and loved how the author took the time to explain their diff points of view, especially on love, and leadership styles and also on career goals which is crucial otherwise we would end up misunderstanding both of them.
This was an amazing book, a worth-it read and the translation was on point and very well done💜 This is one of those books that would live on my bookshelf and I would re-read once in a while just to re-live all these beautiful moments.
你如北京美丽 (Nǐ rú běijīng měilì), or You are as beautiful as Beijing (Machine Translation, MTL, title); or better known by it's adapted title for the cdrama, As Beautiful As You.
