What price would you pay to be someone’s hero? To be remembered as a legend?
Anna has always known exactly what she wanted: to be an undercity hero. But when a hero rescue mission paralyzes her best friend into a shell of the hero Tia was before, Anna struggles to find her own place in the heroes’ world—alone.
When a new rebels group starts to form, Anna finds herself drawn to the crowd that shares her hatred for the Upper City and all the things and people they’ve taken, but is it truly a hatred that’s all her own?
Isolated from those she cherished most, Anna must discover who she truly is: a rebel or a hero. Because when lives are at risk, can she really be both? Will the emotions warring in her head make the choice for her, or will they cost her far more than she’s willing to give before she’s able to discover who they actually belong to?
Teen/Young Adult read, No spoilers. Book 2 in the Undercity Heroes series - Dystopian Scifi SuperHero Urban Fantasy
Anna's story which I found almost as riveting as Tia's in Origins, however I think I felt more protective of Tia due to her age and personality. This installment had more depth and built upon the groundwork laid in Origins so Anna's character grew up - had lost some of her frivolity. The community, world in general was more intricate; had moved on. Society was degenerating and the authors penmanship in depicting this is superb.
Not my usual fare in reading material but as I had enjoyed the first book so much I had to read the second. Shall continue with the series now.
In the first book we meet Anna and Tia as they become heroes for a time in a crazy world, all from Tia's perspective. In this new story, Anna is the star and it takes place after the first one. In this one we really learn more about Anna and the rest of the characters. Its a crazy world and a crazy time for Anna as she learns more about herself and what she stands for. It was entertaining and fun to read. Enjoyed the story and society.
I liked Origins, but I think this book was deeper with lots of layers and more insight into the characters. Where Origins followed Tia, Rebels is Anna’s story. She’s 16 and a Hero, but torn between looking after Tia and wanting notoriety of her own. A well written second book, and one that makes me look forward to the third book in the series A big thank you to the author for providing an ARC copy for me to help proof and review.
What are you willing to do when ‘things need to change’? Would you join up with people you just met? Would things that go against your common sense and conscience? How much risk would you be willing to take for a small chance of improvement? Are you willing to lose your best friend and/or close family over disagreements about how to proceed? If yes, would you turn them in or otherwise try to stop them?
Living under oppression of any kind is not living. Food shortages, police brutality, no healthcare, dangerous housing, lack of proper education, etc. do not belong in civilized societies. Do you rebel with no new system in place? How long does one wait for the status quo to right itself without bloodshed?
Fave quotes: ‘People are less cautious when their emotions run high and anger is the easiest emotion to incite.’ ‘No one deserves to die for things they can’t control.’
I enjoyed the two prequels (Flashfire Angel & Technopath) and book #1 (Origins). Looking forward to reading ‘Battle’ to find out if Anna has made the right decision.
