A romantic. A sweet heart. A poet in his own right. A lover of life. Valentino expressed himself so clearly and often poetically.
His wife Natacha was right- he was a great diaryist. I found myself relating to his many of his views and feelings. I liked that his diary had glimses of thoughts and phrases that cross over into his poetry (which reaffirms to me that those poems were indeed written by him, as the validity of their authorship is often questioned).
A beautiful man and soul inside and out. In some way it makes me proud to be of Italian background.
I sense that Valentino had a certain lust of life, as I suppose many dreamers and romantics do, or those who have managed to keep a speck of childhood innocence or wonder.
Rudolphe was simply special somehow- we know it, and so did he. And while his life was tragically cut short, I am glad for him that he was able to realize his dreams, and to write a book of poetry just as I am grateful for his poetry and for his personal diary which really gives us a good sense of his soul and mind.
Rest in peace, Rudy. You are not forgotten. And you are not ceased.

I waited four decades to read this book and it's well worth the wait. Beautifully written reminiscence of Valentino's trip to Europe in 1924. The copy I got (through interlibrary loan, from Illinois) had much underlining and commenting in the margins on nearly every page...a bit distracting to read someone else's opinions of Rudy's writing. (And shame on this person for defacing a library book!) But a very good read, overall, for any Valentino fan.
