** I am shocked to find that some people think a 2 star 'I liked it' rating is a bad rating. What? I liked it. I LIKED it! That means I read the whole thing, to the last page, in spite of my life raining comets on me. It's a good book that survives the reading process with me. If a book is so-so, it ends up under the bed somewhere, or maybe under a stinky judo bag in the back of the van. So a 2 star from me means, yes, I liked the book, and I'd loan it to a friend and it went everywhere in my jacket pocket or purse until I finished it. A 3 star means that I've ignored friends to finish it and my sink is full of dirty dishes. A 4 star means I'm probably in trouble with my editor for missing a deadline because I was reading this book. But I want you to know . . . I don't finish books I don't like. There's too many good ones out there waiting to be found.

Robin Hobb is the author of three well-received fantasy trilogies: The Farseer Trilogy (Assassin’s Apprentice, Royal Assassin, and Assassin’s Quest), The Liveship Traders Trilogy (Ship of Magic, Mad Ship and Ship of Destiny) and the Tawny Man Trilogy (Fool’s Errand, Golden Fool, and Fool’s Fate) Her current work in progress is entitled Shaman’s Crossing. Robin Hobb lives and works in Tacoma, Washington, and has been a professional writer for over 30 years.

In addition to writing, her interests include gardening, mushrooming, and beachcombing. She and her husband Fred have three grown children and one teenager, and three grand-children.

She also writes as Megan Lindholm, and works under that name have been finalists for the Hugo award, the Nebula Award, and the Endeavor award. She has twice won an Isaac Asimov’s Science Fiction Readers’ Award.

Great to see Fitz'saga brought to life in graphics, but I thought the illustrations inside to be the same as the cover. Turns out they are not, and I am not a fan of this technique, it seems too rough to me:

Nonetheless, it's a good instalment, and I will continue with the miniseries.

Being able to read one of my favorite books ever in a graphic version was awesome! I loved the art style, and I love how they gave the idea of the Wit and the Skill. Can't wait to read the rest!

Look. I actually did not enjoy the novel of this at all.

But since I'm on a comic binge I figured, why not try again with pictures?

And I liked this much more. I enjoyed the visual, and its delivering the pertinent information without getting too wordy.

The artwork is quite dark but that fits (haha) the story of Fitz so far.

Really looking forward to how this goes!

Different medium and thus, different

Naturally, there’s a lot missing from this first chapter, but you get the idea. I might try to continue the series.

This is my second comic iteration of Farseer, and once again, I'm drawn into the story and reminded of how much I love this world and these characters. I can't wait to keep reading!!

Nice and pretty

Very short and I want to read more, but don't know if its worth buying all the books in so small parts.
There is a collection that I am thinking of buying

I enjoyed the introduction they gave with everyone, although I think that for the people who have not read the books, some things could be confusing.
The art style is… interesting to me. I like the colour palette but I found the lines too harsh at times. Burrich and Verity look way to old, and at times Fitz looked less like a child with his expressions.
And the wit was cool but I don’t think people who haven’t read the books would get what that could mean.

I read the original novel(s) way back in 1995 when they first came out and enjoyed them enough that I read all the books Hobb wrote for the next decade or so. As this is the book series that started it all, and as well establishes the world in which most of them take place, it still has a special place in my memory.

The graphic novel covers a part of the first novel, the early childhood of Fitz Chivaldry, a royal bastard brought to the court around age six and as the machinations take place is trained in a number of disciplines - but most importantly, and secretly trained as the King's Assassin. The core plot is a variant of 'farmboy to hero' trope but an interesting one. For me, politics play a major part of the appeal.

The adaptation to the graphical novel is good - it's been almost three decades since I last read the novel, but there are still many familiar parts and if something was skipped I did not miss it. I do remember that in the novels there's an unfortunate amount of moping by the main character which is thankfully absent in the adaptation. As the space is condensed, the plot also opens up more clearly than I remember, though it does come with some pretty heavy speech bubbles full of exposition.

Art is good (even excellent in places) but knows it's there to support the story rather than carry it.

Recommended for all new readers and for returning ones such as myself. For true fans I'm not sure - there are likely adaptations that purists may find distasteful but my memory does not extend far enough to remember them.

A colorful adaption to an incredible fantasy book

I loved the art and how the panels feel true to how I imagined it in my head when reading Assassin's Apprentice. I highly recommend picking this up if you are a fan of the series and even if you aren't this could be a spectacular way to experience the story. I'm looking forward to how they adapt particular scenes of the book that rely on the first-person POV.

format: ebook

i read assassin’s apprentice some time in 2023 and thought this might be a fun way to reread before continuing on with the farseer trilogy.

this first issue of the graphic novel quickly sums up the introductory portion of how fitz ends up with the royals. i do miss the emotional tone of the novel, but as this is only the first issue this might change in future issues of the graphic novel. it’s basically too short to rate.

Such a quick read I’m disappointed there isn’t more! Given Hobb’s slow and methodical pacing, I’m sure this is going to be a great, streamlined way to experience Fitz’s story once it’s all released. But it is awesome to see characters like Burrich, Verity, Regal, and of course Fitz, brought to life!

I loved the original story, but the cover and several title pages had a much nicer graphic than the rest of the book. It was rather rough, and dark, and while dark kind of fits the narrative, it makes for confusion between people as they all look so much the same.
I wish the book was done in the same style as the cover

Lovely, but too short!

A faithful telling of Fitz's introduction to the Farseer's, can't fault the quality but dropped a point due to it being just too short at 20 pages, also works out quite expensive.

It is one of the first dark fantasy novels!

Start with a backyard child. Hard world. No one wants him. Father has too give up his claim to the throne. The child is only seven! What more could happen?

Good but slow

I love the original series by Robin Hobb, so when I saw this I absolutley had to get it. I think this was good, but maybe some things were "lost in translation" if you will. However, I will absolutley be continuing.

I haven't read the novel this is based on so don't know how it compares--but can say I really enjoyed this. The art style worked well for the content, which I can't get out of my head. I wish the rest of the story was published so I could keep reading to find out what happens next.

The artwork was lovely and I wanted to like the story but I couldn't figure out the character relations. And there was no mention of an assassin so I guess he comes later but I don't think I'll be continuing because of the confusion. 🤷🏻‍♀️
