How will the residents of a small English village survive the apocalypse?
When Dexter arrives back home he just wants to collect his inheritance and fly somewhere warm. He wakes up one autumn morning to find a deadly virus which turns ordinary people into flesh-eating killers has spread across the country and has reached the village. His mysterious grandfather Josiah's genes seem to alter the virus's effects, and when Dexter is bitten and becomes infected he finds that he has never felt better.
Teaming up with his long-lost cousins, Dexter finds himself fighting to save his home against a pack of infected hunters preying on the people of the village. The cousin's immunity doesn't go unnoticed and attracts the attention of those still holding onto power. As well as fighting off the infected, Dexter ends up struggling to save his family and in the process unwittingly makes an enemy of the leader of the free world. Just who was Josiah Ellerby? Why have the Americans invaded North Wales? Will Dexter’s pet zombie Lottie really eat chicken? And will Dexter ever take anything seriously again?

DAW1 is a fun and well written book, by indy author Steven Brown, that took 3rd place in the 2022 Written Undead Awards. The story takes place primarily in a small village in the UK, though there are chapters that stray into the bigger world and its political intrigues. When the story begins we find the zombie virus, that has taken down the world, has arrived in a quaint hamlet in the English farmland. The surviving residents hunker down in the local pub, where they fend off the creatures, as well as any living hooligans, while they try to survive. A few of the residents are infected - but don't turn into raging flesh eaters. Instead, they find themselves with heightened senses due to an immunity passed on by a common ancestor who was VERY popular with the local ladies. The immune team up with the folks in the Pub to fight the zombies, gather supplies and figure out what is going on. Meanwhile foreign powers have arrived (not necessarily with good intent) with their remaining military forces and are setting up bases on Britain's coastal islands. This is the first in a series so the story continues but the resolution here in book 1 is fulfilling.
I try to read indy authors often (you should too!) and I'm glad to have discovered Steven Brown.
I love zombie, apocalyptic stories! My husband thinks I am nuts, but I just can't help myself! This is actually very well written, though alk the profanity is needless and a bore. Why mess up a good thing for extra, needless words? Anyway, I did enjoy this storyline very much.... would recommend unless you just don't want to wade through the language.
