I picked up this textbook in a charity shop a few years ago. My reason being that I've always wondered what the A' Level syllabus for General Studies would cover. It was never an available option for me at school. Although the qualification is now redundant and this book somewhat dated, I'm so glad I dipped in and out of this as it was insightful and so interesting.
It dealt with critical thinking and analysis of culture, science, society and the contemporary world. Each topic discussed still has relevance to the current era and is supported by data, statistics, news and research articles. It invites you to look for hidden biases and to think objectively.
I enjoyed the artistic elements the most and the scientific ethical debates. On the whole, this was thoroughly thought provoking and I'm grateful to the author for compiling it/summarising key issues in such a balanced and well argued way.
