Ghosts provides an entertaining and enlightening introduction to the world of poltergeists, phantoms, ghouls and spectres. Be prepared to be fascinated and disturbed by the tales of people who have experienced unnerving and sometimes terrifying exposure to the spirits of those who have died but cannot rest.
Good if you want stories to just dip into, as these are mostly summaries. If you're looking for something more in-depth, however, it would fall short of the mark.
This is a good compilation of ghost stories. They are short most no more than two pages and even though some are a little dull most of them are entertaining and believable. It is a good light read that scares a little.
A truly fascinating collection of brief recounts of supernatural activity as observed throughout history. The royals seem to have quite a lot of ghosts attached to them and the stories behind them are great!
Each story begins with a location, date and who the ghost is believed to be. They're written very briefly, as if a friend is quickly telling you the story. They're very quick to get to the meat of the story and I really liked that!
However, the book is badly edited, there are so many mistakes, it's incredibly distracting. I also found, after a while, that the way its written got quite monotonous and I got bored and had to put it down for a while.
But, its a good book to dip in and out of and worth moving past the mistakes to get to the stories.
I bought this book quite a few years ago but never really got round to reading it. As I'm trying to branch out and read more non-fiction books I thought I'd give this a go.
Considering this is, effectively, just a list of ghost tales from various locations, the writing isn't dry. The information given is, for the most part, bare bones. The majority of ghosts are given half a page so you are treated to who they are, who saw them, when and where - some ghosts are given a back story which is interesting but I found that there were a couple of entries where it really was a bare bones entry and they felt quite jarring...
I'm not sure how the ghosts were chosen to be included here, but you get a nice mix of famous ghosts and some quite obscure ones. If this is a topic you're quite interested in I'd say it might be worth a read but I think there must be some more comprehensive books out there.
A 'factual' approach to the subject of ghosts as described by witnesses. It attempts to give the facts only and does so in a rather dry fashion, divesting the subject of the hysteria often surrounding these phenomena but, in so doing, removing the emotional context of the sightings and experiences. The work is neither scholarly nor sensational, trying to take a middle-of-the-road approach, which unfortunately results in a rather unsatisfactory reading experience. For the record, I've had a few inexplicable paranormal experiences, so I keep an open mind on this particular subject.
I really enjoyed this book. It is an exhaustive piece of research and provides detailed accounts of sightings and altercations with ghosts, poltergeists, fairies, banshees and other paranormal activities. There is no real evidence that all these events occurred, but it makes an intriguing read.
it was not as good as i expect .. the way the writer used to Narrative the stories in the book was boring and iterative , so the stories don't differ from each other ..
