My nieces wanted a bedtime story, and I'm always down for magic so we started reading The Perfect Secret together. It felt like we were starting in the middle of a story. Once we finished, I realized how many previous Magic Puppies there were and that we were, in fact, starting in the middle of a story. However, there's enough context to care and enough mystery for us to use our imaginations about what might happen next. There's even a little plot twist that sent the nieces into a tizzy when I pretended to stop reading right in the middle of the unanswered questions. The magic puppy has a distinct voice, which I liked ,and the book's vocabulary pushes the kids just enough--not quite a challenge but not quite easy. We were all disappointed in the end. It stopped in the middle of a really good potential conclusion that I hope doesn't take another 15 magic puppies to resolve.

This book was very poorly written. No plot, no character development, no lessons learned. And it was quite boring. I read it aloud to my daughter who is an animal lover and who shares her first name with the main character of this book. It was not interesting and took us several days to get through the short bit of text.
