While this book gives a good insight into some of the wonderful humanitarian operations that the author participated in, I felt that it could have gone into more detail about many of them. Guy Gervais, a bush pilot for many years, spent many many hours flying to bring medical and survival help to remote areas of South America and Africa.
I was surprised to learn that Wings of Hope is based in St. Louis where I live. I never knew that. Besides Wings of Hope, Guy also was connected to Avions Sans Frontieres, based in Canada. In many cases, the two charities work closely together to deliver aid to remote areas.
Guy tells about helping jungle communities build airstrips, teaching others how to fly small airplanes, and repairing and maintaining his planes in less than ideal circumstances. His work kept him away from family for about 3 months each assignment.
Guy is obviously not a professional writer and though there is nothing wrong with his style or presentation, it left me wanting to know more details about the communities he helped. He touches on some of the dangers and conditions of flying as a bush pilot, but many of the stories seem abridged. He certainly has lived an interesting life and has done some amazing things to help people in remote areas.
The book made me more aware of the work of the two charities, and I would recommend it for that reason.
A book that might change your life. Guy Gervais is a terrific man and Wings of Hope has helped so many people over their years of donating planes and pilots to help people in 3rd World countries survive.
