The Fastest Man Alive is back in this new collection of tales from the 1960s. In this third volume, The Flash faces foes from his Rogues Gallery including The Trickster, The Weather Wizard, The Mirror Master, Captain Cold and more and teams up with Green Lantern.
This is quite enjoyable and quite fun, but there were times where some of the writing was just so golden age that the science behind the comic was a little over fantastic. And honestly, it feels like the engagement between Flash and his fiance lasted way too long. But it's nice to have these collections available to show us where the comics came from and for that alone this was good.
Still marginal growth as a quality book, but it's getting better, this in 1966, ten years after Barry Allen took over being the Flash.
For one thing, Carmine Infantino's art is getting better. I guess his inkers draw harder lines or something.
Gardner Fox does most of the decent stories, campy tales of the eccentric bad guys, like how they have a guy who tailors their horrific looking outfits. John Broome is more of a forgettable space adventure guy, at least Fox has humor.
And one story by an author I traditionally like, Robert Kanigher, who fittingly wrote for Jay Garrick (old Flash who makes some cameos in new Flash) and introduced Barry Allen in "Showcase" magazine in 1956.
It's a lot more bearable for lame comic books, I hope volume 4 is even better!
More Silver Age fun from the DC Archives. There isn't much to add to Volume Three of The Flash that wasn't true for the first two books, though Carmine Infantino's artwork is improving by leaps and bounds for a more playful style, and the basic characteristics of the Flash's fun rogue's gallery is always a good treat, whether it's Captain Cold as a wannabe ladies man, or the Trickster's insistence on not really hurting anyone, or even keeping what he steals if he can just trick the Flash. Fun as always.
A huge nostalgia trip for me, this collection, and a celebration of a time when a lot of story had a little space to play in. There are some miniature masterpieces in here.
