12/17--This book never gets old! I've re-read it so many times and love it every time.

12/13--I don't know what it is that's so sweet and magical about this story, but I just adore it! I've read it every single year since it was released and love it just as much each time. There are parts that still make me giggle and other parts that make me want to shake Abbie, yet I can completely understand why she wants to protect her heart. I love the bakery and all the yummy desserts that are mentioned. And I love Ben! What a sweet guy! The chemistry and banter between the two of them is adorable and tender. Such a cute story.

12/12--This is a holiday classic story for me. There's just something about this story that I love and I look forward to reading this story year after year after year. I love it!!!

This is exactly the type of Christmas book I love to read (not one of those depressing ones). Abbie, a single 30 year old, asks for a man for Christmas and finds one under her tree. I giggled through it and loved the romantic story. It's one that I could see being a Hallmark Channel Christmas movie. I mean really--Christmas. Romance. What more could one want?!

Update: I just read this again. I think it's going to be my new holiday tradition. I don't know what it is exactly about this book that I love, but I love it!!! Definitely my kind of book.

Suspend disbelief and enjoy a little holiday fluff. This is a cute, super light, funny Christmas story. I enjoyed it.

This was adorable. It’s basically a clean hallmark-type romance but not with the normal tropes (besides the obvious romance). But that being said, it also has some really raw and relatable feelings, especially if you’ve ever been burned in love and were shy to try again.

Because of this, it’s really fun to discover how the story plays out, and the banter is rather delightful.

Definitely catered to an LDS audience at parts —anyone can enjoy it, just might be confused on some of the cultural vernacular— but again, that only appears a few times.

My sister and I read it to my mom while she was recovering from knee surgery; if you like fluffy sweet Christmas books, this is a good one to get you to smile when you need it….even if it’s June. :)

I picked up Aubrey Mace's newest book, Santa Maybe, last Friday while visiting the Cedar Fort offices. I read it over the weekend and loved it. Then, on the drive home from Utah, I read it to my kids (my stop-the-bickering strategy); they loved it, too. Here's what the back of the book says:

Dear Santa,
I've been a good girl this year. (Well . . . pretty good.) I have a nice life and there's only one thing that I really want one thing that's missing. If you happen to have an extra one lying around your workshop, I would really like a husband. I promise to take good care of him.

Love, Abbie

With a successful bakery to run, super cute nieces and nephews to spoil, and plenty of good friends to keep her company, Abbie s not about to start crying over the fact that she s doesn't have a boyfriend to spend Christmas with. But when her sister convinces her to write a note to Santa, Abbie has no idea that a little Christmas magic is about to land her the man of her dreams. Or rather, that man is about to land smack dab on the floor in front of her Christmas tree with no memory of how he got there.

Now Abbie and Ben have to figure out where he came from, who he really is, and if he's actually available.

Aubrey Mace, the award-winning author of Spare Change, has done it again! This light-hearted holiday romance is sure to please even the most cynical scrooge. Told with humor, sweetness, and Aubrey's signature wit, this is one Christmas story that will keep you smiling all year round.

So here are five reasons I think this book is worth a read:

1. Great way to get in the holiday spirit! The fun plot involving Santa will have you planning for the season in no time. Additionally, it is the perfect lightness for those upcoming busy holiday weeks. I even love the touching little fruitcake part near the beginning.

2. The main male character, Ben, will make you drool. 'Nuff said.

3. The plot of Santa Maybe will keep you guessing--this is not a predictable book. It even has a little sense of mystery about it.

4. Mace does a great job with her character relationships. The main character (Abbie) has a fun -- yet realistic -- relationship with her sister, a few different friends, and even her parents.

5. Santa Maybe will make you smile. There are several parts that got me laughing, not to mention the ending, which left me wanting more.

The only drawback: you will be hungry every time you set Santa Maybe down. There are so many references to yummy baked goods that it might just make you have to break out the mixer and recipe book. The chocolate mousse cake, in particular, sounded delectable.

A 30 something single girl asking for a husband for Christmas, only to have Santa deliver him in the most conventional way, and yet to be completely perplexed at the possibility of such an event to occur. I enjoyed this as well. It was a very easy read, engaging, but not so much that i was neglecting my children to indulge... it was a quick chapter here and there. I loved the chemistry between Ben and Abbie, I love the expressions that she described on Ben's face... I could picture it so well, it was so real. And I completely related to the way Abbie felt. I have had similar emotions in the dating game, and it made me realize how happy I am to have my husband, and at the same time, I think this book gives a real picture and a real hope for the single girls (despite the whole Santa fantasy) who are looking for the magic connection. It was more of a process for Abbie to bring down her walls, and let love happen rather than controlling every aspect for self preservation and I thought it was good. Light, enjoyable, real, entertaining. The romantic in me was satisfied... for the most part. :)

I read this book nearly straight through. Fun Christmas story. Obviously we are past Christmas but I loved it anyway. I think this could be read at anytime of the year. Sweet love story between Ben and Abbie. And who wouldn’t want a hunk of a man left under their Christmas tree. What a gift. This book made me laugh and cry a bit too. I wish we could have gotten a bit more of Ben and Abbie’s background stories but it wasn’t meant to be.

I thought this was a delightfully humorous romance, that took the majesty and magic of the holiday season to a "Whole other level". Much like Richard Paul Evans, "At points it was rather "White-knuckled as you ride the roller coaster of emotions, but in the end you'll be glad for the ride. So in the end, Ask yourself the question "What will you ask Santa for? Maybe?

Simple, a bit short, and A little cheesy at parts but I really liked it. Maybe a little more detail on the characters would be nice. You know, looks, stature, etc. maybe a stronger ending.

Abbie has everything she needs in life-- she owns a successful bakery, she adores her nieces and nephew, she has plenty of friends. She's also been in love hundreds of times, but none of those romances has ever stuck. On the advice of her sister, Grace, Abbie decides to ask Santa for a man. And she gets him, waking up on Christmas morning with the perfect guy under the Christmas tree. Only the perfect guy claims to have amnesia, and Abbie can't tell whether or not he's telling the truth.

Santa Maybe was a cute book. Predictable, yes, but not bad. It's an easy read at 180 pages, and something I might crawl into bed with on a chilly winter night to pass a couple of pleasant hours. It's entertaining. Abbie is actually a fairly interesting character, and has to go through a bit of inner struggle to decide whether or not she really wants what she thinks she does. It's also only the second book I've read in the romance category, and unlike the other one, Santa Maybe didn't make me feel like I wanted to vomit and/or slit my wrists.

But the review wouldn't be complete without a little bit of criticism. First of all, although the book was published by Cedar Fort and marketed toward an LDS audience, there's absolutely no mention of Abbie's religion until about halfway through the book. Suddenly, it's Sunday, and Abbie's lying in bed, and her sister's encouraging her to stay there. And I'm thinking, okay, this must be one of those books where the character's not overtly LDS, since we're 100 pages in and she's staying in bed on Sunday. But suddenly she's at the singles ward, and the book becomes very Mormon. I felt like Mace should have decided and defined at the outset that Abbie was LDS and this was a Mormon book, because it felt a little like being dropped into a place that I didn't think the book was going. Also, it drove me nuts that Mace never designated a setting for the book. Just some anonymous town somewhere in America. I wanted a town with a name-- it would give the story more credence. Maybe it was intentional (since Santa does play a rather hefty role in the book, albeit behind the scenes), but that part bugged me.

This was an absolutely delightful reading experience. It's a "sweet' story centered around Christmas. Abbie Canfield is a 30 something young woman who has literally been "left at the altar", as it were, by at least 3 separate guys. She told herself "enough already". She made the decision to make her life as happy as she can make it without having a loving relationship with a man. She loves to bake and decides to open her own bakery. Abbie has a happily married sister named Grace who really believes Abbie deserves to have the same kind of family contentment that she enjoys. Grace suggests to Abbie that she write a letter to Santa asking for what she wants most. Christmas Eve Abbie writes her little letter and leaves it for Santa. During the night she hears a thump and decides to investigate the source. Much to her surprise she finds a guy, in pajamas, asleep under her Christmas Tree. What happens from this point on is how Abbie deals with the situation that has arisen in her well ordered life and the question that is not answered until the end is will Abbie open her heart and her life to the possibilities of having the kind of relationship she has always desired. Ms. Mace makes her characters charming and believable. You will find much to smile and even chuckle at in this Christmas offering.

I read the book Santa Maybe by Aubrey Mace. I really liked this book; I've read it more than four times! It’s based around Christmas time. It all starts when the main character, Abbie, decides to write a letter to Santa and ask for a boyfriend. This is one of my favorite (clean) romance books.

I really liked the characters in this book, there are several. It’s kind of hard to keep up, but you’ll eventually get it! My favorite character, without a doubt, was Ben. He was such a sweetheart and super witty! He’s one of the main reasons why I love this book!

I didn't hate anything about this book, I loved every last detail. I really liked how Abbie owned her own bakery. I love how she describes each of the desserts. I actually baked a lot while and after I was reading the book. My house was filled with rainbow cupcakes, cookies, and cakes. I really liked the part on New Year’s Eve, when Abbie threw a party. This was one of my most favorite parts.

This was a great romance novel. Although it is a Mormon love story, I think everyone would enjoy it. Santa Maybe was a clean romance, it was nothing like Twilight. I highly recommend it to anyone! I look forward to reading any other books by Aubrey Mace.

Feeling particularly lonely, thirty-year-old Abbie gives in to her sister's suggestion to write Santa and ask for a husband. She's awoken at 4 AM Christmas morning by a thump and finds a man in his pajamas sleeping under her Christmas tree.

He's got amnesia and Abbie can't imagine Santa actually sent her a man, but there's no other explanation. She decides to call him Ben, lacking his real name, and tries her hardest not to fall for him, even though he just seems perfect for her. After all, if he doesn't know who he is, what if he's married? It wouldn't do to grow attached to a guy when he's just going to leave her as she always gets left behind.

This was a cute, quick story and I was happy to suspend my disbelief and follow along, but at the very end, it jumped the shark and became just "okay" to me.

December 2011: I really, really liked this book. It was completely unbelievable and silly but so fun and cute. The dialogue was great...lots of funny lines and scenarios. And the pacing was just exactly what I like from a light romance. I don't want to talk it up too much and give unrealistic expectations, but it was such a fun book. I brought it home with me and made my sister and mom read it, too. And I liked it so much that I'm sure I will read it again in a few years.

(P.S. Even though I knew this was an LDS author, it seemed like the story was meant for a larger audience. But suddenly, around p. 100, the main characters were going to church in a singles' ward. It felt out of place, and I kind of wish that if she was going to put an LDS spin on it I had known it from the beginning. Other than that, no real complaints.

December 2015: When none of my other fluff books came into the library in time for Christmas reading, I picked up this old favorite. It didn't hold up quite as well to a second reading, but it was still enjoyable and exactly the kind of light reading I was looking for.

Santa Maybe is Mace's third novel. I've read the previous two as well. She always has a way of bringing the reader into the story and care for the characters within a few short pages.

Santa Maybe was a sweet story about a good girl who has been done wrong by past loves in her life, thus swearing herself off of men completely. Her sister convinces her to write a note on Christmas Eve to Santa, asking for a worthy man for a husband. She is surprised when in the midnight hours of Christmas, a man is found passed out under her Christmas tree. He turns out to be a generous and kind, not to mention handsome, man, claiming to have amnesia. They quickly fall in love, but she will not allow herself to move the relationship forward in case his wife whom he can't remember comes in to claim him eventually.

The ending was a bit predictable, but it was fun and entertaining to read throughout anyway. She owns her own bakery in the novel and I definitely found myself making a few batches of cookies right after I finished reading the novel. Sweet, funny, and well worth the read. Put me in the Xmas spirit quickly.

I’ve actually wanted to read this since last Christmas and finally was able to get my hands on a copy. I think it would be a perfect holiday book to curl up with next to a warm fire. Anyway, I thought it was a cute story, well written and had likable characters. Abbie and Ben were cute together, I’m not sure how realistic their whole situation was, she seemed to accept this stranger into her house rather quickly, even offering to make him breakfast. I guess if it we’re me the last think I would do is offer to make an intruder breakfast, even if he was hot. The only other thing that kind of bothered me was Abbie’s sister Grace, again her reaction to the whole situation just didn’t seem very real. It drives me crazy when married people suddenly forget how hard dating is and start giving single people the worst advice (especially things they probably never would have done when they were dating). Anyway, it’s a cute, lighthearted story and I can see myself reading it again once the holidays roll around.

Santa Maybe by Aubrey Mace

This Christmas offering by Aubrey is a wonderfully deliightful treat for cozying up in a chair, but make sure you're by a nice fire. Abbie is a thirty-year old single lady with a bakery, but she's lonely, wants a husband, but has lost out in relationships, so is talked into leaving a note to Santa, asking for a husband, never dreaming she would wake up Christmas morning to find a man asleep underneath her Christmas tree. Because Abbie sees the initials SBC on his monogrammed pajamas, she decides to call him Ben. And since he doesn't know how he got there or who he is, they try to find out who he really is. The situations they find themselves in, get quite hilarious at times. Do yourself a favor and read this charming holiday tale.

Decided to pick this one up again. I just needed something I didn't really have to think about. This fit the bill!

Update: I wanted some light, fluffy cotton candy for my brain and so I grabbed this book. I actually think I liked it better this time around. Maybe it's just because I needed something a little more on the silly/unbelievable side. It was just a good fun read. Nothing amazing... just fun.

First read: December 16, 2009
I liked this book - didn't love it, but I did like it. The beginning of the story was unique and fun. But it seemed to follow a fairly common pattern and I had figured out how it would end about half way through... I did get some of the minor details of the ending wrong, but my basic premise was dead on.
So, basically, this was a fun read, finished it in one afternoon, but the second half felt really predictable.

Wow, really? Santa is real and buddies with her new beau and this book isn't categorized as fantasy or young adult? Every Christmas I love reading Christmassy books and I always end up with one that makes me regret this impulse. It's like there are so few Christmas book options out there that the publishers will publish anything.

Also, perhaps the author didn't think her timeline through, but based on the prologue Abbie would be at least 35-years-old as she swore off men in her "early thirties" and had dedicated herself to her bakery, which had been open for five years. And yet she has the emotional maturity of a teen.

And a silly thing that irked me - she baked an apple pie late in the day on Saturday and left it to cool, but the bakery wasn't open on Sunday. That pie would be a sodden mess on Monday.

I picked this book up for a light, fun Christmas read and that's exactly what it was. Aubrey Mace, author of Spare Change and My Fairy Grandmother offers up a fun scenario of what might happen should our grown up Christmas wishes actually came true. This is a perfect book for those who once believed. The resolution is a little far fetched for the cynic that I've become, but Abbie and Ben make it work. My only wish was that we knew a little bit more of each of them. Santa Maybe is a short sweet read with lessons about learning to trust after you have become jaded and the power of possibilities. I walked away form it with more hope and holiday cheer.

Cute christmas story about a woman who is single and doesn't seem to think she'll ever find the right guy not for the lack of experience. In one last effort to appease her subconscious she writes a wish list for Santa to bring her a man for Christmas...and he does. Once her wish is granted she's not sure how to go about accepting it since her present is playing like he has amnesia. When the truth comes out that they are both lonely people that have thought love was outside of their reach, fear of being hurt makes Abbie turn the opportunity away. When "ben" leaves to go back home, she realizes her mistake and tracks him down to ask for another chance to see if the relationship will work. great feel good story.

This was such a fun book. I absolutely loved it. It was a really quick, easy read, and the story was very cute. I didn't like having to suspend my disbelief at the end, though. It's not that I mind fantasy and magic. I don't. In fact, fantasy is one of my favorite genres. However, I feel that an author needs to set up an expectation for the reader. It's an important part of suspending disbelief and doing it well. It shouldn't just be thrust upon the readers; we need to know that it's coming. However, it wasn't a major part of the book (or maybe it was--they're really wouldn't have been a story without it). At any rate, I was able to live with it, and I thoroughly enjoyed this book despite it.
