When Mark and Alice decide to install a program of their own devising into the only quantum computer in the world, wildly unintended consequences occur. The computer not only becomes self-aware, but the new program produces an unchangeable core directive which impels it to protect Mark and Alice as well as itself. It doesn't matter what the political, religious and military establishments think of a sentient computer running rampant on the internet and into secret files of governments all over the world, or what they try in order to stop it. Quanty intends to protect Mark and Alice and itself with all the power at its command no matter who gets hurt or helped in the process. The result is Mark and Alice becoming the focus of governments, spies and the military of every nation, since only they can control Quanty. Or can they? They're on the run but Quanty's unasked for "help" causes them to fall into one disaster after another, with no end in sight.

I grew up in an extremely poor family that was dysfunctional in many ways. We lived in the old segregated south, an era many of my readers have no knowledge of. This and a hardscrabble existence as well as an addictive personality gene(s) that apparently runs in our family shaped my life and played a part in me finally realizing a life-long dream and becoming a writer when I was about fifty years old. This autobiography, now in print and ebook both was begun in response to fans wanting to know more about me, and eventually one of my publishers thought it might make an interesting book. Many members from Betty’s side of the family were amazed at all the things they hadn’t known about me. You can judge for yourself now whether my publisher had the right idea of me doing an autobiography. I hope you are both entertained and possibly that some of you will learn a number of life’s lessons that I discovered the hard way!

Again, another fun book by Darrell Bain. I think I am about out of books he has written so far, but maybe not. This is about two computer programmers creating a self-aware computer. Unfortunately, a child must learn from mistakes, and Quanty (the computer) must make a lot of them as he gains experience and wisdom. Mark and Alice the programmers must deal with the unintended results of Quanty's good intentions. A fun read with a surprising ending to the book. Again there is enough material to write a followup book if the author wants to.

Interesting book - different perspective on the "what would happen if computers got smarter than us" theme. Unlike the Terminator-esque Skynet vision, in Quanty the computer means well, and looks at how society reacts.

It never gets too deep or complicated, but it's an enjoyable read nevertheless.
