This is an unusual storyline involving a independent young lady and a gang member! You will enjoy this story by Laurie Kingery. I won a copy of The Outlaw's Lady on Deb Costello's Blog. This is my honest opinion.

Tess Hennessey is an unusually career-minded young woman living in Texas in the 1880s. As a girl, she apprenticed herself to her Uncle James, learning everything she could about photography. Now she dreams of putting together an impressive portfolio and traveling to New York to work for a famous photographer. After completing one of her first jobs as a professional photographer, Tess is kidnapped by Delgado’s band of Mexican raiders. She learns that Delgado intends for her to document his exploits as his personal photographer. Tess is scared and furious – especially when she learns that the man responsible for her kidnapping is actually Sandoval Parrish (a particularly rakish and attractive man she met at her last assignment) – he made the suggestion. There’s more at stake than she knows, however. Sandoval is actually a Texas Ranger masquerading as a member of Delgado’s raiders, and he’s using Tess’ pictures to help capture Delgado. Over the course of her time with the outlaws, Tess and Sandoval fall in love, and Sandoval reveals his true intentions. However, when the time comes for Delgado to release Tess, he refuses – insisting on her participation in more and more dangerous raids. Tess and Sandoval are forced to make their own, dangerous escape.

Laurie Kingery has created a decent, suspenseful love story with believable characters. Tess and Sandoval are honest with one another and don’t take a ridiculous amount of time learning to communicate. The dangers they face are never overwhelming, and there’s only the tiniest hint that they’ve consummated their relationship at all (a warm look, a glint in someone’s eye, and then Tess is expecting!). This is an “inspirational” romance, but the story would have been just as strong without the faith aspect. While the “inspiration” wasn’t too heavy-handed (distracting), it wasn’t necessary. I liked that Tess was strong, and outspoken, and found it a bit disappointing that she gives up her dream of going to New York and sharing her Delgado photos with a wider audience in the end. Everyone seems to think that Sandoval has “tamed” her in some way. Great, just what we need – more tame women!

Tess has taken over her Uncle's business of photography. It is uncommon for a woman to be doing this type of work during this time period.

Sandoval Parrish needs to kidnap Tess so she can take pictures of Diego Delgado, the outlaw. Sandoval is a Ranger undercover as an outlaw.

Once he sees that Diego is interested in Tess though he has concerns about her well being. He does want Diego stopped and for more then one reason. Diego had seduced his sister and he believed that she was now dead. He wanted Delgado to pay for that.

Between shootings and thieving, kidnapping and all other mayhem we see a story of love and forgiveness and needing to depend fully on God.

I liked this book it just didn't blow me away. Everything was good, but not great. It was an interesting story, but you could predict where the story was headed. I was bothered by her instant trust of someone who kidnapped her. It didn't seem believable. I think the fact that there weren't any surprises and that it stretched realism made my rating lower than it would normally be. The writing and characters were good and there was lots of action.

Good, original storyline to be kidnapped to take pictures of a notorious bandit. I enjoyed the story but felt a few things could have been improved upon. I felt that Tess believed Sandoval a little too quickly when he revealed who he really was. If someone had kidnapped me, I think I would have been a bit more skeptical about believing anything they told me in the future until some trust could be built in the relationship. Also, the romance was a bit dry and rushed.

Only 1 negative thing: Maybe it was just me, but all the details on how photographs were made and taken rather bored me and I found them unnecessary.

Otherwise, it was a great book. The main guy was incredible and his character was really intriguing and funny. I also really liked the plot. It was creative, unique, and full of unexpected twists. The historical aspect of it was also really well-researched and extremely realistic. I loved it!
