Author built wooden boats for over 50 years and shares his knowledge about traditional, practical, plank-on-frame boat construction. Literate, warm, encouraging, insightful. Wonderfully illustrated by Sam Manning.
Evaluating this book properly would require a significant grounding in the theory and nomenclature of boat design and the skills (carpentry in particular) associated with putting that theory into practice.
It is entertaining, mostly clear, and cleanly illustrated - but without a firm grasp on maritime terminology, basic engineering, naval operations, and building methods, I found myself quickly lost, discouraged, and decidedly in over my head. Plenty of detail, but with no overview, the book asks at least as much of the reader as it offers.
